Why is it wrong to call it it? I'm not calling it her or him, because they don't like it. Therefore it is it, it is only 'they' when talking in past tense.

"It" has the implication that they are not human which is pretty degrading.

"They" can also be used in present and future tenses. Eg: "They have gone to the bar" or "they will finish their degree next year" :)
