The last few months of that year were like a fresh start for me but the way a lot of us millennials (and early Gen Zs) rave about the summer of 2016 you’d think it was like Christmas came early. But that was the time my auntie died of cancer so it wasn’t great for me. And the first 3/4 of 2016 weren’t amazing for me personally anyway. I achieved one core goal I had but that was … it.

I'm sorry to hear about your Aunt/also having a poor 2016 as well Redway.

For me, it was how powerless that I felt during that time, in what was a particularly difficult period financially, I think I was never more angry in my adult life as I was back in 2016.

Ironically my Mom would still be around though, which is a positive.

Oh and if you don't mind me asking, what goal did you achieve?

The fact that one manager can stifle your progress and not let you work to the fullest of your capabilities but another one who’s been doing the job almost longer than the first manager’s been alive can really value your skill-set and want to keep you on for as long as possible (just talking in general). And the more seasoned, experienced one tends to be talking from … experience, varied experience, not by the generic book-code that doesn’t take into account the complexities of people, situations, context and the right for staff to feel comfortable and protected by the company when push comes to shove. Very interesting.

There was more than one thing to be fair but one of the main ones was just leaning up again. I’m not a gym buff so I wasn’t at JD burning calories via intense cardio. but I naturally have quite a lean body-build so I was just trying to get back to that. It happened less intentionally but either way, by early 2017 I was back down to 11-stone something, which is where I look my best without having to add bulk to my body. No 6-pack but being at the heavier end of slim for my height (5”10) suits me just fine. And I did get there. After being bigger than I needed to be in 2014/15.

Congratulations on that.

I'm terrible at following diets, so I give full credit to you for losing weight.

Thanks.

And to be honest it wasn’t really a diet thing. I did go through a phase where I ate too much KFC and Maccies but the main thing I needed to do was just exercise a bit more and not have those calories exceed the rate at which I could burn them.

There’s a diet called 1:1/Cambridge 1:1 that’ll have you lose as much as 2 stone in a month if you follow it through but it’s not easy to abide by. Then there’s this drug called topiramate which is mostly used for things like migraine, seizures and alcoholism but is prescribed off-label for weight loss (more-so in America than in the U.K., tbh) because that’s just one of the side effects. And people can lose loads and loads of topiramate (as much as 100 pounds in 3 months) but it comes with all sorts of weird side-effects that aren’t so desirable so it just couldn't be handed out like candy for that. Doctors in this part of the world at least would rather you had another reason for needing to take topiramate than you just want to lose weight. But it’s still the gold standard for weight loss. No other medication can make you lose as much weight as topiramate does.

Tbh that's impressive.

At least from my perspective.

Interesting information.

Tbh, I try not to take Drug Medication, unless I'm in a really bad way.

And the potential side-effects to Topiramate don't sound like my kind of thing personally.

I mean, thanks.

Everyone has their own definition of beauty and personal health when it comes to weight so it’s not by force to always be lean but sometimes staying within your leaner limits weight-wise can just help you look more … like yourself, and it puts less pressure on the heart. I didn’t really fancy being a statistic for a heart attack in my 50s and that’s still a concern so I just know that there’s a limit I’m best staying under weight-wise since I know in myself that I’m just not gonna do much at the gym at any point, really. Here-and-there, sure, but much more of the time when I’m exercising I want to cycle or run. Not catch up to the lever of a treadmill. Again, no point me paying for a gym membership and wasting more money ’cause I just don’t use it enough to justify paying 20 or 35 quid for it a month.

Yeah, topiramate’s a weird one but the weight-loss from it can be tremendous so for that alone (besides the actual on-label stuff that it’s normally used for otherwise) I’d just take it if I needed to lose a lot of weight that bad, you can tolerate the side-effects and you have something else that might be treatable with topiramate. But the UK’s a bit more backwards on prescribing it for weight-loss alone than places like the US so it’s not always easy to get or have prescribed. Maybe a dietician or specialist would do it but it would be hard for someone to get it from a GP (especially if they’re young-ish and inexperienced) off the bat anyway. So unless the person has migraines, binge-eating disorder (another thing topiramate’s definitely good for if not actual bulimia) or a lot of tremor in their body it might not even come up in conversation with the doc. GPs can be a great point of reference for basic health conditions and general advice but they can also be a stumbling block when it comes to getting what you need, whatever that drug is. What one GP might be comfortable prescribing or familiar with might not be so for the next GP you speak to. Either way, getting past them when you’re a patient who knows a lot more than them can be taxing and almost impossible so I just sympathise with anyone in that situation. But you have got to be your own best advocate at times regardless ’cause at end of day doctors don’t know you like you know yourself.

And I’m not saying all young/junior doctors are crap because there are so many seasoned ones out there. Just that if a doc’s lack of experience is going to make someone dismiss queries that might actually be better for you, it’s more likely to be a younger one who’s not been in the game that long and doesn’t have enough seasoned knowledge off their own backs to help people in unique situations or who could benefit from specific/more niche drugs. A good doctor will at least talk about it and weigh up your options respectfully rather than instantly knocking it off the table and not giving you (say) pregabalin because it’s potentially addictive and you’re not in the targeted age demographic for drugs like gabapentin and pregabalin (a middle-aged person with neurotic and nerve-pain troubles).

How does he get his jollies these days? Has he just stopped being a horny old bastard?

How people with missing teeth manage to brush the teeth they do have smoothly.

Mystic Mock 12-04-2024 09:48 AM

How people nearly two decades older than me have better teeth than me.:joker:

Or how Wayne Rooney ever got the Birmingham City job.

Or how women can be so hot?

Or which Fruit tastes the best?

There's a few things to ponder.
