@_missmeggo tweets: NYU hospital generator failed. Evacuating intensive care down nine flights of stairs.

Shaun 30-10-2012 05:46 AM

0111: Latest estimates of the number of people without power now range between five and six million.

0119: With at least 10 deaths linked to Sandy in the US, the storm has also proved deadly north of the border in Canada. Police in Toronto say a woman there was killed by an airborne sign in a car park and pronounced dead at the scene.

..the last report I heard was 12 dead in the US

Edit:..it's just said 13 people in New York alone

SharkAttack 30-10-2012 06:38 AM

It won't be anything remotely close to Katrina. In damage, yes, but not in lives.

Thank god. The devastation is still awful but thankfully the death toll is still relatively low. RIP those who have lost their lives

wasn't the only one. Jimmy also did it.

Watched Letterman, Not having a crowd there was pretty spooky to see.

Macie Lightfoot 30-10-2012 08:52 PM

I live in NJ and this really sucks. The damage is unreal, expected power outages for 5-10 days, trees and branches everywhere. I'm currently living in a hotel and a neighbor's tree fell onto (and into) my house.

Ithinkiloveyoutoo 30-10-2012 10:57 PM

48 dead?! oh no.

And those stupid celebs that were making jokes of this, including Ricky Gervais who can never help himself..... :cloud:

RIP

hope everyone affected is ok, couldn't believe the vast area affected! :(
Here in the UK it's hard to imagine being faced with that much devestation.

Josy 30-10-2012 11:09 PM

Raph posted last night so I think he's ok.

Sorry to hear about your house troynuncdicit :(

the truth 30-10-2012 11:59 PM

Heartfelt sympathies go out to all americans and in particular those directly affected by this nightmare.

Ive heard people mention the possibility of improving sea defences across new york and new jersey and other states...however can much can one defend these coastal cities and states against such a hurricane 1000 miles wide?

The next question that will no doubt arise, is about global warming and climate change. is it just me or are the freak weather getting more freakish month by month, year by year? This wasnt on the scale of the past few tsunamis , but it was still unparalelled storm in its own right. Is it simply the fact we have global tv coverage of these storms that makes them feel more frequent? or in fact are they happening with greater regularity? the FACT the ice caps are melting and the sea levels are rising are surely factors that can no longer be ignored. Its time to act as one world

lostalex 31-10-2012 12:02 AM

I wonder when all the countries that we provide aid too when they have disasters are gonna send us some aid for our disaster? I won't hold my breath. lol

I wouldnt hold my breath....However the truth is america does send more charity and more aid overseas than any nation (the average per head is also one of the highest in the world in america) the brits arent too tight either I think theyre 5th depending which list you believe

the americans are good people on the whole, I believe their fight for a country by the people and for the people is one of the most noble causes on mother earth...truth is the rest of the planet is mostly engulfed in socialist or communist mumbo jumbo whilst at the same time selling out to massive corporations....america is at leats still fighting for a balance....europeans love bad mouthing all americans, but I hate it...the american friends and people Ive known personally have all been fantastic...warm genuine open honest big hearted, I just love them to bits...to blame individuals (apart from bush lol) for american foreign policy is idiotic....truth is the rest of the world has no idea what its like to be repsonsible for the whole world....its so easy to judge from the sidelines....look at what poor old obama has on his plate for the next 7 days? save obamacare, save the homeless, save america, save libya, save syria, save the middle east, save the euro and next week save himself, ...Its lonely at the top...God speed America!:wavey:

Troy :(

BBfanUSA 31-10-2012 01:31 AM

Sorry to hear that Troy. Stay safe. I have a classmate living in Boston. She should be safe.

Heard what happened to 80-90 homes in Queens a NYC neighborhood. That sucks.

You can donate to Red Cross Appearantly if you want over here.

Ithinkiloveyoutoo 31-10-2012 04:12 AM

Sorry to everyone who this has affected here on TIBB aswell. :(

Damage costs $20 Billion.

I wonder if the ridiculously megalistic rich stars will give good sums of the money they don't need or just give a little and hope the majority comes from less fortunate taxpayers when they do their charity marathon.

Anyways, I expect Bon Jovi as he's from New Jersey, and Bruce Springsteen. Those are the only two i'll forgive a little bit. Since Lindsay Lohan, Ricky Gervais and the likes were making light of this before hand they should give the most money out of all.

Ithinkiloveyoutoo 31-10-2012 04:28 AM

Nedusa 31-10-2012 12:43 PM

It should be interesting to see how the majority of New Yorkers survive without their daily fix of fast food. With no McDonalds,Burger King,Wendy's etc... to get their daily5,000 cal fix a lot of them might start suffering from serious malnutrition and a few may even die. Either way its only going to pile even more pressure on the already overstretched emergency services....!!!!

Lee. 31-10-2012 12:48 PM

I'm actually sick of hearing about New York... its like its the only place to have been affected! Haiti and Cuba look apocalyptic in parts, but its all about NYC. Don't get me wrong, I really feel for everybody affected, but the media reality gets on my tits

I keep seeing pictures of the flooded subway in New York and it's just insane. Some of the pumps installed in that system are actually second hand from when the Panama Canal was built in 1914. No wonder everything went to ****.

Nedusa 01-11-2012 05:36 AM

Yes I agree the amount of press and media coverage is a bit disproportionate when considering the number of lives ultimately lost. I don't remember this much coverage when Hurricane Katrina or the Boxing Day Tsunami struck which resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives.

There are natural disasters happening all the time all over the globe but as these do not have the temerity to strike Manhatten they receive far less coverage.

The problem is, no one is prepared for the larger problem...like the ocean flooding your city. Pumps aren't going to do a damned thing. Technology is moving in the right direction, IMHO, but with the wrong products. iPhone or legendary pump system? :joker:

Shaun 01-11-2012 06:29 AM

Really? I remember much more coverage on Katrina and the tsunami.

Maybe it seems so much more nowadays because we've got Twitter, more people use the internet, and news reporting is so much more immediate and word-of-mouth based than it was only until recently

It's true, something hits that big-ass city and the media is all over it. A 4.5 mag earthquake in Los Angeles gets more coverage than a 7.7 in Northwest Canada. Quite the joke.

Feels like they're making NYC into the new Katrina, and Boxing Day wave wasn't as big as the Japan quake/tsunami.

Edit: media-wise

the truth 01-11-2012 02:20 PM

according to the news reporters |NYC has no specifial defence in place? Throw in the fact romney wants to slash to fema emergency response, under romney this threat worsens. he wants to privative the emergency response service? how on earth would that work against a 1000 mile storm? surely you need nationwide government strategies to counter the freak storms
