i think insisting on the uk minimum wage if they want to dock in the uk is perfectly reasonable otherwise it is slave labour

Excellent and it will then set a precident so other organisations don't attempt to drive down wages.

user104658 28-03-2022 07:29 AM

It sadly wouldn't solve anythibg for the staff that have just been fired... They can't now fire all the NEW staff and rehire the old ones... But at least it might stop anything similar happening in future. Also a nice pay bump for those new staff.

tbh if the staff that have left got a 45K payout each as has been suggested, they are probably okay with it especially if they get another job relatively soon or if they are close to pension age they are laughing

but yeah this type of thing should never happen again, not only for the workers but also for the safety of passengers.

But what if by putting every worker back on their pay
Bankrupts the Company
& it Closes down?

has the CEO taken a pay cut, maybe they should replace him with a cut price model?

then it closes, too bad. It's just not acceptable for a company to say we are only viable if we employ slaves

Yes but they are about to Close Down

By changing to cheaper workers
they keep afloat.

Every Company that size
needs an active CEO.

The £45,000 was an average.

Presumably the ones that have been there for years will have got more than those who recently started ?

Well it's the reverse of a cap really... "plugged" I guess is a better word... companies can pay out as much as they want for redundancy but there are statutory minimums that they have to pay for each year served up to 20 years. They CAN continue to pay more for each year beyond 20 if they want, there's no rule saying they can't. Most obviously do max out at 20 years though (pay as little as possible in other words).

arista 28-03-2022 02:50 PM

In Parliament now P&O.

Labour put in an Urgent question

They are still to get the measures in

Fair enough but someone who only started last week isn’t going to get too much, surely

there is a statutory minimum of course, but the p&o line is that they basically exceeded all those minimums because they broke the law in doing what they did. I'm all for those axed workers taking p&o for everything they can get

Obviously there will be winners and losers but if I were a year or so out from my pension and I was offered 45K tax free to leave I would snap their hands off no doubt

There will be some staff who will not want to be forced back to work

in fairness they are doing a great job of that themselves

the government have no loyalty to p&o. It's not a british company, p&o sacked their british workforce, why would the government care if p&O survives or not

i dont think its a win when p&o will have to pay minimum wage to all their new hires if the want to dock in the uk. Its also not a win when they have had to shell out a fortune in redundancy payments and now wont have cheap labour
