Gary Barlow launches music drive

(UKPA) – 1 hour ago

Gary Barlow has helped launch the Practice-a-thon Music campaign.

The Take That musician - along with Russell Watson, Jamie Cullum and Dani Harmer (aka Tracy Beaker) - is urging people to play their part in raising money for children's cancer charity CLIC Sargent by finding their inner musician and getting sponsored to play a musical instrument for two weeks, or hold a fundraising gig.

Gary Barlow said: "I was 10 when I started to play piano, I played it by ear to start with for the first couple of years. It's a very easy song, Back For Good, as there are only four or five chords in it - practice makes perfect, definitely!"

Gary's in Dublin!!!!!!!! Argh. According to Ben Sherpard tweets

From forum

Ben tweeted about Gary

"she's a classical singer incredible voice he has made the album and signed her up. She'll be on GM in nov when the album released

took quick trip to dublin yesterday to i/v gary barlow and his new singer! V impressive Mr B on top form as usual "

Plus he's now written for Shirley Bassey too,he's writing for so many people lately!

Quote:

Shirley Bassey is back with new album after 20 years
Sep 5 2009 by James McCarthy, Western Mail

SUPERSTAR Shirley Bassey is releasing her first studio album in more than 20 years this November.

Now aged 72, the queen of Tiger Bay appears to have taken a leaf out of Tom Jones’ reinvention manual by recording an album of songs penned by young guns from the music industry. The Manic Street Preachers, Take That frontman Gary Barlow, The Pet Shop Boys, Kaiser Chiefs and Bond theme legends John Barry and Don Black have all stepped up to pen tunes for The Performance.

The album producer David Arnold scored Bond films Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

The 47-year-old said: “All these songs were just songs, until Dame Shirley Bassey sang them. Now they’re Shirley Bassey songs – hopefully classic and contemporary, like that voice.

“There’s something about a Bassey performance that can knock the wind out of your sails, make you laugh, make you cry, let you in on the joke or be led to a more exotic place.

“I tried to make a record that made the most of that voice and one that could sit alongside her other classic recordings.

“There isn’t a ‘next Shirley Bassey’, there never really was and I doubt if there ever will be. She’s as unique and wonderful today as she has ever been and I hope this record will reach an audience who may never have heard her before.”

Jo Mills is the widow of Gordon Mills, who wrote songs for Tom Jones, including It’s Not Unusual.

The 69-year-old, a huge fan of Dame Shirley, said: “Mark, Tom’s son, did a fabulous job when he did Reload. I don’t know whether Gordon, had he been alive, would have thought along those lines.

“It takes a young mind to think along those lines and someone has seen that and thought along the same lines [with The Performance]. I’m sure they did.

“That was what brought him [Sir Tom] back into the ‘young sphere’ and maybe she is trying to do that.”

HMV’s Gennaro Castaldo thought the record would be huge but that stiff competition from the likes of Robbie Williams and X Factor contestants would keep her from topping the charts.

She said: “The timing is great with the run up to Christmas. It is the ideal gift for older members of the family and something the kids will maybe pick up, particularly with the collaborations with contemporary artists.

“It worked well for Tom Jones and I’m sure it will work well for Shirley Bassey.”

None of the songs are duets but talks are underway about involving artists in promo videos.

Dame Shirley impersonator Ceri Jones, who performs as Ceri Dupree, began pretending to be the star when he was in school.

The 41-year-old, of Penarth, Cardiff, said: “For all those artists to write all those songs, it goes to show how much of an icon she is.

“There are only a few singers they would do this for. One would be Streisand and another would be Tina Turner. Madonna has not reached that status.”

He added: “You’ve got the Bassey fans and you’ve got the fans of people who’ve written for her. Take That fans will buy it for Gary Barlow.

“It’s got success written all over it.

“And the Manics song ‘The Girl from Tiger Bay!’ I don’t know what the song is like but the title’s great.”

Dame Shirley, who has sold 135 million records and now lives in Monte Carlo, has just released new pictures of herself in a figure-hugging red dress, dripping with diamonds.

The image consultant Wenda James-Rowe who runs The Style Team in Cardiff Bay, thought she looked great.

The 41-year-old said: “She has been around for a long time, something like 40 years, and she never lets you down in the bling and glamour stakes.”

The Performance is out on November 9.

YOKO ONO has given her blessing to TAKE THAT as the UK's new Fab Four.
JOHN LENNON's widow revealed she is a big fan of the man band - and named their No1 Shine as her favourite track.

GARY BARLOW, MARK OWEN, HOWARD DONALD and JASON ORANGE met Yoko on stage at the GQ Men Of The Year Awards at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, as she presented them with the gong for Best Band.

Beaming Yoko said: "I love Shine. I know most of their greatest hits. They're a great British band."

Mark said: "It's amazing that Yoko thinks that about our music. It is an honour to accept an award from her."

The pat on the back from Yoko at last night's bash comes after Gary and Co have been holed up in Abbey Road Studios for two days working on a secret project.

The lads have just returned from a three-month break and met up on Monday at the famous London studios where THE BEATLES recorded almost all their famous hits.

A new live DVD is being released in time for Christmas documenting Take That's sold-out Circus UK tour.

The DVD will also feature a bonus disc of the band playing hits in the world-famous Studio Two at Abbey Road - where hits including Hey Jude were recorded.

Just so you know, Gary is on piano, Mark on bass, Jason on guitar and Howard on drums.

Speaking just before the GQ bash, Gary said: "It's been absolutely amazing in Abbey Road.

"The place just has an aura about it. There's so much history about it. I'd love to record our next album there."

All of the lads are relishing being back in the studio after their well-deserved break.

Jason said: "We've had a great holiday and now it's back to work."

And Howard told me: "I did some DJing in Ibiza so I haven't had as long a holiday as the other guys but it's good to be back. I've played a bit of golf but I'm not ready to take you on yet, Smarty."

Gary also revealed he has had a listen to old bandmate ROBBIE WILLIAMS' new album Reality Killed The Video Star - and loved it.

He said: "I've heard Robbie's album. I think it's great.

"I can hear TREVOR HORN's influence on it. I would buy anything that guy does.

"Rob's music still has an Eighties electronic feel but it sounds fresh."

That sounds like a seal of approval to me.

Btw if someone could cut that pic for me I'd be very grateful

Alesha Dixon is to release Gary Barlow-penned track 'To Love Again' as her next single.

The singer, who recently jetted over to Los Angeles to work with the Take That star, will release the track on November 15.

The song precedes the deluxe re-release of her album The Alesha Show: The Encore, due out later that month.

Earlier this year, Dixon and Barlow both took part in the charity Mount Kilimanjaro climb to raise money for Comic Relief.
