Chilean Mine Rescue Brought Forward

The planned rescue of the 33 trapped Chilean miners is set to begin later tonight.

Government officials have announced that the rescue will now begin at 8pm this evening local time (midnight UK time).

A specially constructed steel rescue capsule was successfully tested earlier today, descending almost the whole way down the 2,040ft shaft, engineers said. Chief engineer Andre Sougarret said a rescue capsule, named Phoenix, barely registered a scratch as it travelled up and down the tunnel.

The men were trapped by a collapsed tunnel on 5 August.

Around 1000 journalists from all over the world have rushed to the site, joining the families of the trapped miners, many of whom have been camped at the San Jose mine since news broke of the miners’ entrapment over two months ago.

Chilean president Sebastian Pinera is due to arrive at the site later today and security has been tightened in the immediate area.

Mining minister Laurence Golborne said that the authorities would take their time carrying out the rescue. “We are going to take all the time necessary to ensure the completion of these plans,” he told reporters.

Sixteen members of Chilean special forces, all of whom are veterans of previous underground rescues, are ready to begin the process of bringing out the miners, although Mr Golborne said the rescuers would only be told at the last minute which of them would begin the rescue attempt. “All the rescuers have been prepared to fulfil that role,” he said.

Reports in the Chilean media suggest that the miners have already been told which of them will be the first to be rescued, although there are suggestions that the most psychologically capable will be the first out. The Phoenix capsule will take around 15 minutes to ascend the 622 metres.

Will probs be on Sky News and all that.

I'm waiting to see if some of the blokes get battered by their wives when they come out, apparently several of them have been found out to be having affairs and both their wives and mistresses have been camped out waiting for them.

'Omg darling you're alive, I missed you so much!'

'Now take that you cheating bastard!'

Whaaaaaaaaaack!

No One is Dead
and BBCNews
and SkyNews doing non-stop Live film is so boring.

Other News today matters to us in the UK.

This chart makes me nervous! :/

It makes me feel like not everything is guaranteed yet and just in case something goes wrong (HOPE NOT WITH ALL MY HEART) these are those that made it and those that didn't!

Btw President Pinera has been there since the 1rst miner, wow! Amazing. Respect, but at the same time isn't there also other work he has to give attention to? I suppose since they closed everything today he can keep his attention here.

I wish I knew what they were chanting everytime someone comes out.

Kerry 13-10-2010 06:29 PM

I won't settle until they're all out :( Goodness knows what their families are going through

arista 13-10-2010 06:31 PM

"just in case something goes wrong"

If something did it would just be a Delay.

It is Boring to watch Live
Even Ch4News thinks it worth going Live to as another one comes up.

I agree. Yes it's great that they've been rescued but do we really need in-depth live coverage of everyone of them getting rescued? There are more important and relevant issues to cover.

Iceman 13-10-2010 11:53 PM

last 3 on the way out now......

King Gizzard 14-10-2010 12:06 AM

I've loved the non stop coverage, ive had it on ALL the time, only slept for about 4 hours so only missed about 5 of the miners being rescued

Iceman 14-10-2010 12:06 AM

2 to go now.

Iceman 14-10-2010 12:09 AM

The Chilean miners first task after their release is to advise Roy Hodgson on how to get out of a massive hole before Christmas!

King Gizzard 14-10-2010 12:10 AM

Every person involved deserves some sort of a reward

Except the president, who just stood there all the time giving them all hugs, probably to gain the support of the nation
