Frankie Boyle in Racism Row

Frankie Boyle is at the centre of another storm after using the words ‘n igger’ and ‘P aki’ in his Channel 4 show this week.
Although the words were intended to highlight racist attitudes, their use has heaped pressure on the broadcaster following his joke about Katie Price's disabled son.

Tory MP John Whittingdale, chairman of the all-party Culture Media and Sport Committee in the Commons, said Channel 4 should consider sacking the comic over the words.
But they stood by him, saying the intent was satirical.

In his stand-up routine, Boyle discussed how news reports always considered British lives more valued than foreign ones.
He said: ‘What gets me is our callousness as a society when we read out our dead on the news first, because our lives are more important. Other people’s aren’t worth as much.’

He then mimicked a newsreader to add: ‘A bomb went off in Kandahar today, killing two British servicemen, three UN relief workers and a whole bunch of P akis.’

Later he said: ‘The Ministry of Defence? At least in the old days we were honest, it was The Ministry of War.’ He then adopted the tone of a receptionist to say: ‘Hello Ministry of War, department of n igger-bombing, how can I help?’

The episode of Tramadol Nights also included a sketch in which a woman dressed like a sexy Super Mario danced provocatively before waving to the camera and saying: ‘Hello to P akis everywhere.’

Afterwards, Boyle in character as an academic said: ‘That was very probably wrong.’

Whittingdale said: ‘The words n igger and P aki are deeply offensive to a large number of people. I don't think even in comedy it is justified.'

‘Frankie Boyle is becoming a serial offender. I really think Channel 4 will have to think whether it's appropriate to screen programmes which are regularly causing offence to a lot (one) of people. It might be a breach of the Broadcasting Code. Ofcom will have to determine that.’

A spokesman for campaign group Show Racism The Red Card said: ‘Regardless of context and intention, the use of words such as these has the effect of normalising racist language.’

And Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the Ramadhan Foundation called it ‘abhorrent,’ adding: ‘People at home watching that will think that this sort of language terminology is acceptable in the 21st Century.’ I do look to Boyle as my moral compass.

But a Channel 4 spokesman said: ‘We strongly refute any suggestion we are endorsing or condoning racist language by our broadcast of Frankie Boyle's Tramadol Nights.

‘This cutting-edge comedy is clearly intended to ridicule and satirise the use of these words - Frankie Boyle was not endorsing them. Channel 4 would not have broadcast these words had they been used in a racist way. All the jokes highlight the unacceptable nature of this language.’

Regulators Ofcom are set to investigate Boyle’s joke against Katie Price’s eight-year-old son, broadcast earlier in the series.

Tory wankers getting behind yet another pointless censorship campaign due to their inability to distingish genuine literal statements from playing a fictional newsreader... IN SATIRE. No surprise there then.

People defending him is a disgrace! HE IS VULGAR!!

He acts FAKE for the camera's and wants to attract the people with a more less classier sense of humour.

But do you acknowledge that he is VILE, unclassy and prejudice.

MTVN 24-12-2010 12:16 AM

How the hell is he fake? Out of all the words you could use for Frankie Boyle, that's probably the least appropiate

Maybe first you should explain why you want to legally censor everything on TV you that doesn't fit your narrow, literal-minded definition of good taste.

Maybe if you stopped fulminating and actually explained why Boyle's words were so "vile" and deserving of censorship. I'm genuinely intrigued. What punishable offence is Boyle guilty of?

Vicky. 24-12-2010 12:34 AM

Will that be the one I watched tonight? With the 'cookie monster' skit? Had a lot of *****s and p***s in it.

I have never watched him before, was only interested after this whole katie price thing, and Im quite ashamed to say I did find quite a bit of it funny D:

Why would he want to attract people with a 'classy sense of humour' - whatever that is - through lewd jokes? Of which his entire Tramadol Nights catastrophe seems to soley rely on?

I hate the show. I think he is the comedic equivalent of Marilyn Manson. A tired old parody of his former self trying too hard to shock and awe. The show relies entirely on recycled stand up material and skits so lazy that it's amazing to think they came from the pen of a man who is pretty intelligent.

BUT I am not stupid enough to want to censor and take off telly everything I don't like you hysterical, one sided, sheltered old nitwit.

M X 24-12-2010 11:25 AM

He's such a twat now trying to be all controversial but he's failing everytime because he is losing a lot of supporters.

Stu 24-12-2010 11:37 AM

Unless I missed his CBeebies slot I'm pretty sure he was always trying to be controversial. The difference is there was a place for that in Mock The Week where we got small doses of him at a time with form and structure. When unleashed into his own TV show however it's crash and burn.

The controversy and sick jokes would be fine if they had a point and led to an overall conclusion or message but they don't.
