How old where you when...

You learned how to cook?

(as in using the cooker and oven)

Shaun 15-07-2011 03:18 AM

Erm...about 12? I used to help my mum make Sunday dinners since I was about 9.

I've made pancakes every Pancake Day since 2002 though

Chuck 15-07-2011 03:20 AM

15 because it was when I turned vegetarian and had to cook my own food separately.

Jordan. 15-07-2011 03:23 AM

From starting Food Tech in school so 11/12ish.

Kerry 15-07-2011 03:28 AM

Not really sure. Watched my Nan cook from a very young age. Was probably about 11 when I got me mitts on stuff. I was totally cooking for myself though from about 16

ILoveTRW 15-07-2011 03:41 AM

:D

We are great!!! That's what we are!!

Basic stuff from about 14 or so.

I could knock up full cooked breakfasts, spag bol (home made), make meals- traditional british grub style -from scratch from about 19 or 20 as I lived alone from that age. Had my fair share of absolute disasters along the way !!

Wasn't till I was about 25 that I began trying out making my own soups, sauces, making own pies and getting adventurous doing 3 course meals for friends.

Josy 15-07-2011 10:58 AM

When I moved into my first house so 16.

Benjamin 15-07-2011 10:59 AM

At about 7/8 years old. I'd help my mum out and cooked for my younger sisters when I was around 10/11.

Maia 15-07-2011 11:05 AM

When I was about 12 I started cooking my own dinners every now and then - I was a massive couscous addict because it was such an easy food to make  I cook a lot more now, I experiment with my own recipes a lot too.

Josy 15-07-2011 11:10 AM

Lockes going to be living off chicken soup cooked in the micro all his days

Niall 15-07-2011 12:01 PM

6-10. I used to help out in the kitchen so my Dad showed me how the oven work etc.

Smithy 15-07-2011 12:06 PM

I put pizza's in the oven, does that count?

joeysteele 15-07-2011 12:10 PM

11, I used to help my Grandmother. She taught me loads.

'Conor 15-07-2011 12:10 PM

i cant cook.

Claymores 15-07-2011 01:26 PM

When I was a lad in final year of school, they had a class for pupils who were being a bit idle (already had their exam passes and just marking time before going on to college/uni).

The class was called "Flat Cookery" and on reflection, I suppose it was well-intentioned (meant to teach young people how to cook when they were a student living in their own/shared apartment).

BUT the Home Economics teacher's classes were in things like a Victoria Sponge Cake

As we all know, that's what students make most every day :joker:

I'm 20 and I still can't cook. I can do simple things like frying, microwaving and just shoving something in the oven. But cooking from scratch is a no go. And if I'm cooking more than one thing at once, I always struggle to time everything right. :(

Just heating things or making beans on toast is a lot simpler when you're busy anyway - don't worry about it

I think when I was 17/18 I started doing a few things, now I can make somewhat complex dishes, but they don't always turn out well. Anyway I'm still learning.

Jords 15-07-2011 02:31 PM

12 but only basic stuff, which is the same for now

Jords 15-07-2011 02:32 PM

I remember making cheese on toast and feeling like a God.

Harry! 15-07-2011 02:43 PM

Maybe 12 when I first arted Food Tech at school. I can only make deserts like pancakes though, not proper meals!

Ammi 15-07-2011 02:53 PM

I helped my mum cook from being really young, probably about 5 or 6 but I was probably about 12 when I cooked a meal completely on my own for my family, nothing very exciting though. I guess I got better when I got married and wanted to impress my OH
