Would you (or have you) eat(en) snails?

Escargot's if you want to make it sound any less gross

I saw a programme where Rick Stein ate them and I honestly nearly vomited. Pure gooey gunky slimey mess. I thought once cooked they'd at least look drier but no :yuk: They are literally scooped out of the shell with all their slimery

Nah.

Imagine nipping outside and grabbing a few snails and lobbing them in the pan???

Shaun 22-07-2011 04:25 AM

I'm incredibly fussy and don't like garden pests, so it's a double no for me

I also don't get why people eat snails but not slugs? Well, the crazy people that eat snails that is

Yes, I've had Escargot (posh!). Don't really have a real specific taste - it's more the herbs / garlic etc rather than anything. they have a texture similar to mushrooms but a little chewier. Wasn't too impressed!

Lots of people eat whelks - now THAT, give me the serious heave!

joeysteele 22-07-2011 08:52 AM

Yes, had them in France when I was 15, the once only, I didn't like them but I have always said I'd try anything food wise once.

Livia 22-07-2011 09:19 AM

You're brave, Joey! I have never eaten snails but I have been around while they were cooking and they smelt wonderful, a bit like garlic bread. Didn't tempt me to try them, though...

T* 22-07-2011 09:45 AM

i've had them like 15 times. Yummy! :D.

I'd rather eat snail than horse, which i understand they also eat in some european countries. But hey, regional cuisine is different all over the world. I wouldn't wanna eat alligator or raccoon, which they eat in some Southern US states. I wouldn't wanna eat dog or beetles which they eat in some asian countries.

I'm sure it's all psychological. Eating any living thing is repulsive really, if you think about it long enuf.

I think it's mostly the French with the horse-eating. And yes, you're right, eating any living thing is kind of repulsive if you think about it...

I quite like the HSBC advert about catching insects. (Crickets or locusts???) Anyway, fried they look quite yummy and I always want to try the ones the seller offers BEFORE he puts the sugar sprinkles on them in the advert.

Jords 22-07-2011 12:12 PM

I would try them if the offer came about :joker:

What about roasted trantula!? :o

cub 22-07-2011 12:14 PM

I've eaten them. I ate them in Paris with garlic. Just tasted the garlic to be honest.

Niamh. 22-07-2011 12:21 PM

No and No.

Even squid I'd have problems with - anything in my imagination beforehand that is going to be squishy and chewy. Give me fried tarantula anyday.

ew they look like snot!

Claymores 22-07-2011 12:40 PM

Mind you - I did eat a ready meal from Iceland's recently - the 'beef' was probably more squidgy and goulish than any snail meat !!!!!!

I'd try some insects I think. Like crickets or something. I'd try frogslegs too. It's just the slimey texture - bleugh

CharlieO 22-07-2011 08:28 PM

Was forced too and will never have on again.
