Teen Forced To Marry Her Rapist Kills Herself

The suicide of a 16-year-old Moroccan girl who was forced to marry her rapist has provoked outrage from local human rights groups and across the internet.

An online petition, a Facebook page and Twitter users all called for changes to the country's laws after Amina Filali swallowed rat poison on Saturday to protest against her marriage to the man who assaulted her a year earlier.

Article 475 of the Moroccan penal code allows for the "kidnapper" of a minor to marry his victim and escape prosecution.

I sometimes wonder what kind of world we live in that would allow such things to happen in this day and age, but am only too aware that many countries have such ridiculous laws. Completely shocking.

Without religion, there would be good people doing good things and bad people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion.

Horrible story. I've been following this for a while and honestly, it's not just this one case, women's rights in the ARAB world are revolting time and time again.

This is a very real ARAB and MUSLIM issue, and there's nothing racist about saying that. It really is an issue in This particular community.

This is something Arabs and Muslims need to address in their OWn communities. like RIGHT NOW.

It ties into the other thread we were talking about polygamy.
this is about CULTURE not RACE.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Christianity is not without shame either. How are Rush and Santorum getting on at the moment?

Rush Limbaugh is the leader of the republicans, and he's calling women sluts because they want contraception paid for in healthcare and saying they can have it if they post sex videos online.

Santorum is 2nd in the race for the republican nomination and he says women who are raped should have to deliver the babies as they are gifts from god.

Nick Griffin, is the leader of a fringe racist party. He's also Catholic, and uses his religion to back up his racial hatred.

Santorum is second in race of 4 Psycho's i think every sane person knows that Romney will take the nomination, and if he doesn't, it will just seal the republicons fate.

You are blessed in Britain really, not having a real democracy. The fact is, i could go to any council estate and find plenty of epople that agree with Santorums ideals. I watch a lot of british tv, so i know there are plenty of racists and homophobes out there dude. I've seen the jeremy Kyle show, and i know they don't struggle to find guests.

so don't think you have anything to be proud of.

Gordon Brown was PM for 2 years, how many times was he elected??? *smiles sweetly*

You would struggle to find many people in the UK who believe that pregnancies resulting from rape, should be carried to term. You would also struggle to find UK citizens who believe in the vaginal probe laws favoured by states such as Virginia are trying to introduce.

Of course we have racists over here. They exist everywhere in the world, and we are no different.

Even Mitt Romney said he would eradicate planned parenthood yesterday. These are faith (Christianity or it's bastardisations like Mormonism) issues.

I'm aware we have scum, but no political leader would come out and say that women are sluts and they should have to pay for their own contraception.

John Boehner is 3rd in line to the presidency, so it's not completely impossible he could end up as president. Obama is a target for right wing crazies and Obiden (as palin wold say) is old.

Now not only would John Boehner not have been elected, but he's a member of the other party.

but that's the thing isn't it, you have no say in your political leader, because it's not decided by the people. right? it's decided by the party. The People have no say at all. right?

the people never chose Gordon Brown, did they?

Members of the parties elect the leaders. Same as America, but because America is so big, it takes a while longer!

I've also added something on to the bottom of my post that replied to previously. You might want to look at it.

and what about the OTHER house of parliment.. the house of LORDS.. lets talk about that... the people barely have a choice in the house of commons, but they have absolutely NO choice in the house of Lords, right?

i'm just a dumb American, so maybe i'm wrong, but when's the last time anyone had a say about the house of Lords??

Oh we know. Don't have to tell us.

lostalex 15-03-2012 12:32 PM

but you are worried about the "circus" of American politics, where people are actually fighting for votes from the PEOPLE.

REAL DEMOCRACY looks like a circus though, well i'll take a circus over the ESTABLISHMENT IMPOSING a house of CLOWNS over us anyday.

I supposse yur so brainwashed you'd prefer LORDS over a real democratic CHOICE...

That's what comes when we have a state religion with the queen as head of it. It's a disgusting political abomination. I would much prefer separation of church and state as Jefferson stated for your country.

I'm not defending our political system. The American constitution is a much better system on face value. The trouble with ours though, we have milennia of progress and change to take into consideration when we arrived at our system. We had to swap from monarchy to political and keep everyone interested. We have the political system we do, not because it's the best, but because of incremental progress that was made without the constant civil wars.

It's interesting that you bring up Boehner though, because really Cameron should be spending time with him, not OBAMA. Boehner is his equal,, not Obama. The Speaker of the House is the equal to the Prime Minister of the UK not the President.

I'm sorry, but you are wrong. George H. W. Bush had nothing to do with Bush 43's election.

His name had brand power, but you cannot say that that his father had any real connections to help him get elected. His Father, H. W. couldn't even get himself re-elected, so it's a silly argument to make.

lostalex 15-03-2012 12:46 PM

I love you mentioning family names, coming from someone who has a MONARCHY, it's pretty silly.

That's a case of seeing what you want to see.

If he didn't have Bush as a surname, he wouldn't have had the money, and he wouldn't have been given a leg up into politics in the south, where he made his name.

The bush are a powerful American family that can raise money.

I'm not a monarchist, but the monarchy has no say in our political system.
