on julian and his humour

Q Are you as dull as Julian says you are?

A If im dull im happy with that because that guy is extremely dull. i know where hes going with everything he says. his humour is all related to gayness and we're past that. he told me he came to NY and nobody laughed at his shows - i know why because his humour is 30 years old

Lorenzo with that ether

Locke. 10-09-2012 03:37 PM

Lorenzo is right. Julian was pretty funny on launch night and again on BOTS after the final, but in the house Julie, Mike, Lorenzo and Harvey were all funnier.

flamingGalah! 10-09-2012 03:47 PM

Lorenzo, like many American's, just doesn't get his sort of humour...

I'm glad Lorenzo doesn't like his "gay" jokes it shows to me that Julian's humour is working, as it goes right over the top of his vacuous head :D

alex_front2 10-09-2012 03:49 PM

Got to agree with Lozza for sure. And I think it applies to most gay mainstream comics too. Alan Carr Graham Norton Zoe Lyons etc cant seem to get over their gayness even the ones who initial dont trade on being gay eventually bang on and on about being gay once hit mainstream eg Simon Amstell (used to be a bit less "gay") and Steven K Amos.

There is already Graham Norton and Alan Carr on TV doing the whole "us gays are so camp we hate sport*, straight men have no style (oh that tired old cliche, if youre going to stereotype the oppsite rings true; plenty of gays need style advice from.straight guys)".

Julian is a nice guy fundamentally but his comedy is very very dated. His whole "look im a homosexual" routine was cringey especially as previous cbb included a top ex - rugby player who just happened to be gay. theres a reason why clarey isnt on TV and it has nothing to do with 1993 comedy awards and norman lamont.

* Its as if cricketer Stephen davies and rugbys Gareth Thomas from cbb 9 never existes

Its nothing to do with not getting it - its just passe humour. Lozza lives in NY so he probably knows plenty of gays lesbians and bi folks in his chic socialite lifestyle. julians humour doesnt work nowadays as this is increasingly a post gay era ie straight guys are no longer really "afraid" or gay guys more indifference. straight guys often are better dressed bettee groomed and urbane than alot of gay guys. theres a gay guy who works nearby who has dandruff unironed trousers and really naff suits.

i was expecting harvey and ash to be homophobic to him but ash sweetly said to julian on about 2 day "ill beat anyone up who's nasty to you", plus he got the 'white swallow' joke when so called lover of camp julie didnt. Harvey got on with julian it was julian who tried to play victim with all hes tedious 'there are too many straight guys' bigotry.

Elsewhere in interview Lozza says he liked jasimne she had a lovely side but also a dark side and she needs help.

he was very attractes to danica but doesnt trust her or likw her career path. he hates porn. he thinks her boyfriend is odd to let her rinse/ flirt with guys and suggested he.might be a swinger who gets off on seeing her witg other guys.

he also says he still doesnt get Brit humour. He implies its not very clever sophisticated and that dressing up in silly costumes would be on kida tv in US.

the truth 10-09-2012 04:05 PM

julian isnt that funny, but hes also not that nice or warm either. hes narrow minded and a total hypocrite too. the way he tried to say all hetro men are bores and did the usual Im too amrt and funny for american routines. everything he did and said was unoriginal and 30 years out of date. is he was likebale, warm, nice open minded he may have got away with it, but he isnt any of those things. his after show interview he had nothing left to say after a few minutes. very dull. I thought brian was far wittier, warmer, funnier and more likeable in their interview. whereas lorenzo seemed a genuinely nice interesting well rounded bloke. Im interested to know more about.

flamingGalah! 10-09-2012 04:05 PM

Well plenty of people do still find his sort of humour funny, just as they do with Alan Carr & Graham Norton...

It is quite 'seaside postcard' humour, full of double entrendres & the like, something that British humour has always had a niche in, like the "Carry On" films...

I just don't think Lorenzo gets it full stop, but then I'm not surprised from someone as dull as him :joker:

Saph 10-09-2012 04:07 PM

Joan Rivers has been telling the same jokes since the 70s and they're still hilarious, it just depends what you find funny. I thought Julian was hilarious with his bitchy comments.

alex_front2 10-09-2012 04:12 PM

I get the humour just dont find it funny now. Ive moved on. Clarey hasnt. Hes still peddling the same gaggs from 1993.Thats why hes not on TV. Bless him. We live in a world where our milkmen etc are gay. No biggy. Except noone seems to have told julian that nobody realy cares if hes a 53 year old homosexual. Ott gay humour is very dated now. im no fan of film producer Judd Apatow films but hes capturing the zeitgeist comedy mood.

if anything comedy is now more masculinised. gays used to boast about having the smart one liners, now the straight men do.

Now even female comics are moving on from that camp/ girly stuff. in movies theres been a trend to no longer depict gay guys as the asexual effeminate guy with the predictable camp gags but as a bloke who is masculine sloppy and bit of a dumb jock who just happens to like men.

Still I was shocked goodyear didnt get the white swallow gag. when he did the "i used to work at the circus" i rolled my eyelids ( and was again shocked non of hm saw joke coming a mile off) as he tol that SAME joke on Sat Night Live 30 years ago. He doesnt even have new material.

im no fan of russell brand but he took camp humour, laced it with laddishness and heterosexuality and made it modern and different. julian clarey reminds me of that woman from 1970s sitcom "Are You Being Served" who goes on about her "pussy". Yep that naff.

yes but the likes of kenneth williams and graham norton are far funnier than julian clary. far more interesting, far warmer, nicer, friendlier, chattier, more broad minded...his material wasnt funny in 1990 and its not funny enough now either...saying something snide and sarcastic to a less intelligent american, is not exactly a huge achievement.i saw julian clary's attempt to remake a carry on film, it got 2.5 out of 10 on IMDB it was the unfunniest film ever. Hes simply not as funny. nothing to do with being gay at all.

I was very disappointed with him overall. He must have been an insufferable bore to live with

Niamh. 10-09-2012 04:18 PM

Well said Lorenzo. Julian is extremely dull, he did **** all in that house, he only won because of his popularity before BB

joan rivers is still funny, julian isnt. joan is a worldwide hit. she doesnt pick her targets she laughs about everything. but underneath that razor sharp wit and occasional loose tongue, lies a very very warm, passionate loving person. she does loads for charities too. I quite understand how she could offend some people, but she gets away with it because she is funny and because she laughs at herself and doesnt choose targets. Id say similar things about larry david. another genius jewish comedian and jackie mason or garry shandling. all have the ability to observe the hilarious pecularities of the human condition and all have the ability to laugh at themselves. theyre all warm and likeable people too , which makes them even funnier imho

Lorenzo hit the nail on the head re: this outdated bore.

flamingGalah! 10-09-2012 04:38 PM

Well some of you don't like him/his humour, BUT I & many others do :xyxwave:

thats fair enough galah. I hope you enjoy it. Humour is subjective. each to his own, no worries:blush:

alex_front2 10-09-2012 04:44 PM

Julian won as he was a decent guy (living in a house with HAM) who put up with goodyear. not really for his humour. julie jasmine lozza were easily funnier than him. and julian is the comic.

the public wantes to like him. he'll get a tv show but it will flop. gay comedy can no longer claim to be funnier and sharper that "straight" comedy.

if this had been normal bb he woyld have been evicted like scot n tom.but as long as ham didnt win i cant complain about clareys win.

the truth 10-09-2012 04:47 PM

worst mistake mike made was forming ham, it dillute dhis vote. especially as harvey and ashley became less impressive as the show wore on. martin just didnt front up enough in face to face nominations, even he admitted that. though I think he probably deserved to win overall. he wasnt that entertaining or funny. but he was a cool guy and didnt try too hard, didnt disrespect anyone and did in fact stand up to julie, danica and harveys dodgy behaviour. hes a massive star and a stellar bloke and I look forward to seeing what he does next.

Brother Leon 10-09-2012 05:04 PM

Well said. He was really unfunny in there and joins the long list of dull BB winners too.

Agree too close HAM alignnent damaged his chances. I was no fan of Mikes but objectively he could have won if
- he spent more time with Martin, Sam and Colleen (older viewers are key voters)
- been friends with Lozza - DR 50 shades of leopard was his high point
- not been sexist "we need to get rid of titties" was not going to win votes
- didnt take danica romance so serioisly - he became obsessive and heavy
- not encouraged ashs treatment of rhian

I think Julian's very humourous, it was Lorenzo I found boring, that said, fair enough if Lorenzo doesn't get Julian's humour, not everyone will. Julian's tour is a sellout, so he must be doing something right :)

Coming from the one who doesn't have a sense of humor.

dizzy bint 10-09-2012 08:36 PM

I agree with Lorenzo, Julian wasn't funny in the BB house. I think he's no good at spontaneous humour, he seems to need a script.

Lorenzo was never going to see the best of British humour in that house.
