Has the Apprentice jumped the Shark

They're having this discussion on DS so I thought I'd bring it to here.

Its gone the way of trying to get 'entertaining' people rather than people with genuine solid business backgrounds.

I think it has. That Luisa sort should be on no better show than Take me out, she is definitely not Apprentice material. I doubt she will win but I have no doubt she will hang around in the spotlight after the show is over.

In earlier series there were genuine business tasks that required good judgement and a certain business knowledge. Now all they do is shout over each other, big them selves up way beyond their own abilities and try to steal airtime instead of concentrating on the task.

Its gone the way of the Restaurant and that shows 'jump' series was its last. What do you all think?

Meh, it's always been an entertainment show first and foremost and hasn't realy changed since the beginning. There's questionable candidates in every series.

Shaun 09-05-2013 10:31 AM

I feel like the type of candidate has changed dramatically this series... especially with the females. All of them bar Jaz are attractive, bickering, well-groomed and kind of blend into the same reality TV star for me. The guys, too, are almost like the stereotypical American jock (the way they fist pump and shout "come on!" when they win, for example, is wildly unattractive)

It's just... I don't know. Part of the problem may be that the show's tired and all of the candidates are predictable or formulaic. But it does feel like there are no serious or modest business people on the show any more.

But none as bad as this lot. They're all quite savvy about the game and how to get airtime eg Zee calling out that other bloke (cant remember his name) who was trying to get in on the deal by giving a late discount price. The other candidates knew exactly what he was up to and it failed. The candidates kind of know the tasks are secondary to LS's decision making so the conflict between them is becoming the centre of the show. It is no longer a business show. For me, that should not have been a highlight of the show.

As for the girl? What a mess. All of them are pretty faces with little or no substance.

And the gameplay element has definitely been sussed by even the most obnoxious of morons... gang up on one person, let everyone make mistakes that'll cost them individually, and just undermine everything.

Vanessa 09-05-2013 10:32 AM

I'm enjoying the show. I like these candidates. They're funny with their squabbles. :joker:

Agree. LS's thought process for firing has never had much to do with the task and the candidates have sussed it out.

The problem with the whole premise of the show, is that to serious business people in London, earning £100k would be a step down. I know that seems a strange thing to say, but it's true. And the new format makes it, so that even publicity for their ideas can make the candidates money, so as long as they get exposure, they will be fairly contented.

I think a better show would be to take a group of people from long term unemployment, train them, then give them tasks like these, allowing employers to see their skills and personalities on display.

You would cut out the wannabes, and would actually be providing a service to help boost the economy. He might eventually even earn that Lordship of his.

Brother Leon 09-05-2013 10:59 AM

It's a lot better for me so not really fussed.

Shaun 09-05-2013 11:02 AM

just to clarify the salary Jesus, the show now focusses on giving them a £250k start-up fund for their business plans rather than a £100k job

Yeah, I know. I was trying to give reasons why both formats are flawed. The fact that the candidates fighting for £250k get publicity for themselves, will still open doors, even if it's only out of curiosity from buyers.

Agree with this.

If I was starting a business I don't think I'd want LS as a partner for fear he'll try and take over but I'll happily take his quarter mill and the TV exposure an appearance on the show will give the business.

Jumped the Shark? I was just wondering what it meant too

GiRTh 09-05-2013 01:31 PM

I didn't know. I thought it was quite a well used phrase.

Jump The Shark

There used to be a website that listed when most shows jumped and had a poll for user to vote when they thought a particular show had jumped, but unfortunately TV guide bought that website and got rid of that part. It was fun to vote and some of the reasons for jumping were quite funny.:spin:

Oh that's interesting, I'd never heard it before. Thanks

It's a reference to happy days. It got so stupid towards the end, that they actually had the fonz jump a shark.

InOne 10-05-2013 01:07 PM

Really couldn't get into the first episode, the second one was a bit better but the women are a mess. Everyone just seems a bit gobby and there's not much genuine tactics or gameplaying.

They need entertaining candidates after how awful last year's series was - so I think it's a step in the right direction.

Samm 10-05-2013 06:53 PM

I love the apprentice This year lots of strong minded candidates

Vanessa 10-05-2013 06:56 PM

Yes, i'm really enjoying it.
