One Direction to hold on to Number 1 album this weekend

Plus: Find out where Il Divo, Rebecca Ferguson, Leona Lewis and Britney Spears are set to enter the Official Albums Chart on Sunday...
---

The British record buying public’s love affair with One Direction shows no sign of letting up as Harry, Louis, Niall, Zayn and Liam’s third full-length, Midnight Memories, looks set to hold onto the Number 1 spot on the Official Albums Chart for a second week running.

On Sunday, Midnight Memories became not only the fastest selling artist album of 2013 so far, but the fastest selling album of 1D’s career to date. It sold more than 237,000 copies during its first week on sale, beating the first week tally of the previous record holder, Random Access Memories by Daft Punk (165,000 copies week one). If it continues to sell at its current rate, by Christmas, Midnight Memories could become one of the biggest selling albums of the year.

Meanwhile, Take That stars Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow switch places on today’s Update with Robbie’s Swings Both Ways climbing one place to Number 2, and Gary’s Since I Saw You Last is down one to 3.

Il Divo are headed for their sixth Top 10 album and this week’s highest new entry with A Musical Affair (4), while Olly Murs is down one to 5 with Right Place, Right Time.
New Entries

In addition to Il Divo’s A Musical Affair (4), there are five other new entries on this week’s Official Albums Chart Update.

Rebecca Ferguson’s long-awaited second album, Freedom, is currently at Number 6 on today’s Update. The X Factor star finished as runner up behind winner Matt Cardle in the reality TV singing contest. Her first album, Heaven, was released in 2011 and peaked at Number 3 on the Official Albums Chart. It has sold nearly 650,000 copies to date.

Leona Lewis is set to enter at Number 17 on Sunday with her new Christmas album, Christmas With Love, while pop princess Britney Spears is a new entry midweek at Number 19 with her eighth album, Britney Jean.

Britain’s Got Talent finalists Richard And Adam’s The Christmas Album (25) and Muse’s Live At Rome Olympic Stadium (30) complete today’s new entries.

The Official Albums Chart Update Top 40 is as follows. The Official Albums Chart Top 100 will be posted in full, here, on Sunday at 7pm.

One Direction have blown every other act out the water. Consecutive Number 1 Albums. Impressive Sales(especially considering the standards of this day and age), sold out Stadium tours and you can't go anywhere without seeing them. Pretty crazy to think they were kids on a TV Show not long ago. A great success story. :worship:

Few other Reality Show contestants were New Entries this week too.

1D, the Most successful and the only worthy thing to come out the X Factor....Pls Confirm this peeps.

They probably are but it's SO undeserved they're only successful because of how they look, and their songs are a special type of terrible

Smithy 06-12-2013 09:36 PM

I think they're just another fad tbh, Jonas Brothers, Justin Bieber now One Direction

Not saying what they've accomplished isn't impressive, but it won't be long before someone else comes along and takes the attention of all the tweens that adore them

Kazanne 06-12-2013 09:37 PM

I have got to really like 1D over the last year,I am so pleased they are doing so well, nice guys

Saph 06-12-2013 09:38 PM

Two words, Les Dawson

MeMyselfAndI 06-12-2013 09:41 PM

Lol no.
And Leona's done zero promotion at all bar Daybreak a few weeks ago (lol)
Shes been in the US all week doing radio tours, her albums in the top 30 on itunes there after 2 performances (Despite not releasing any music in 4 years & disappearing :worship:) & shes got more. Her album is only really available online, supermarkets such as Tesco's etc & shops aren't selling it, no one even knows the album is out here. But shes promoting here all next week, the true release date for the UK tbh

King Gizzard 06-12-2013 09:42 PM

great group, happily confirmed

Thats nice but she's nowhere near 1D's level, she's never even toured outside Europe and 1D are selling out stadiums WW

Actually no I take what I said was back, longevity is an important factor too they could be over next year.

Kelly Clarkson imo

Drew. 06-12-2013 09:44 PM

Leona becoming irrelevant whilst 1D carry on strong

We'll see if she comes even close to their numbers then next week....

Tbf, even Olly is closing in on her overall sales in much less time and as a Male Winner. Won't be long until she doesn't even have that that to her name and let's be real One Direction already overtook her regardless.Won't be long until Olly is 2nd.

True, but I don't think they are the greatest reality TV success story considering it's a manufactured band full of rejected applicants ( and reapplicants) for a talent show.

I think Kelly Clarkson who has been selling WW for over a decade (Not churning out manufactured albums yearly with no say), Carrie Underwood & Leona Lewis are the top 3 & 1D 4th.

King Gizzard 06-12-2013 09:48 PM

What if we actually did like them

Me. I Am Salman 06-12-2013 09:48 PM

LOL we like One Direction we're so contrarian and it goes against what you'd usually expect from 'lads' like us haha were so ****ing hilarious

what is actually being achieved here

MeMyselfAndI 06-12-2013 09:50 PM

Leon & Drew would be bullied at my college, anyone who likes 1D or boybands get so much flack

Alf 06-12-2013 09:50 PM

Brilliant song writers and musicians

The thing is 'lads' don't like them, their target market is teen girls & gays

They're the greatest success story by far, but they're not the greatest contestants, IA with the 3 you named as the best (except maybe replace Carrie Underwood with Rebecca Ferguson just because of her critical acclaim and lack of a profile over here for Carrie)

They dont know you're a Leona fan yet then?

Amy Jade 06-12-2013 09:54 PM

Kelly Clarkson is surely the true winner here or Carrie Underwood in terms of acclaim. I am more of a fan of Little Mix and Leona but being honest Kelly has been going for what...10 years? I doubt 1D will be here in a few years.

1D may have a lot of obsessed fans but when they grow out of it and the next big thing shows up they'll be out in the cold. I already outgrew them, I used to be obsessed with Zayn.
