Is Christopher the best representation of a gay man the show has had in years?

Struggling to remember better to be honest. This year we've had Mark who is so stereotypical it's not even funny.
Last year, we had whichever camp twin had actually managed to fit out the closet and Dan - a man so internally homophobic it was a wonder he didn't walk around wearing a pink pillowcase over his head at all times.
BB13 we had Scott - very camp, constantly preening himself, BB12 the closest we had was "bisexual" Tom who was very much in a similar vein to Govan the year before.
Christopher is a fabulous gay

idk why we're still 'looking' for TV representations of minorities, as if we're trying to find that one perfect gay that makes all homophobia go away

especially in Big Brother of all places

JTM45 10-08-2014 04:31 AM

I agree with you Rob!
He's never relied on playing up to being gay for the camera's like most have and whether people like him or not they can't say he hasn't done his best to get on with everyone in the house.

I think on the whole he's a very decent bloke and i can't see why he wouldn't be seen as having represented gay men very well (not that he should have to have been representing anyone other than himself mind you).

Great guy and i really hope he finishes in the top three. He deserves to!

Chuckyegg 10-08-2014 08:42 AM

Sounds like you believe that the less camp you are, the better you represent a gay man. I'm not sure I agree.

JoshBB 10-08-2014 08:45 AM

Maybe if we just take the whole "being gay" out of it and just look at their character the world would be a better place??

kefln 10-08-2014 10:06 AM

This topic has red flags all over it!

Being gay isn't the end all of Christopher, its who he is, its part of him. He's an intelligent man, maybe a little dull for BB, and he is not defined by his sexuality as far as the show is concerned.

At no point in his relationship with Mark did I ever wonder if it was a showmance. It was a genuine romance exploration of two people. Maybe not compatible people, but still.

In the context of this thread, I believe that Christopher has been a great representative of gay men, of men from Ireland, and "normal" men in general.

Cal. 10-08-2014 10:26 AM

Well I don't think that being camp makes you a bad representative for gay people, just because certain people in the minority group don't want to tie themselves in with 'the flamboyant type of gay person' doesn't mean that those flamboyant gay people don't have right to represent gay people. I think both Mark and Christopher have represented the minority group in their own ways, Mark as strong willed, fierce and willing to stand up to himself and Christopher for pretty much the same thing but I'm guessing you're putting him in higher regard because he isn't as 'camp' as Mark. It doesn't make any difference.

Liam- 10-08-2014 10:26 AM

In reality, no.. Not one person can be a representative for a group of people that is so diverse.
Both Christopher and Mark fit into the generic 'camp' sector of gay men, so they only really represent that one group imo

jackc1806 10-08-2014 10:34 AM

I get his point though, it shows people that not all gay people are stereotypically camp and flamboyant. Then again, this doesn't make him a better beacon than Mark, it just represents the diversity between gay people similar to the diversity between straight people.

I honestly have no idea what a good representation of a gay man would look like.As far as i can see,They're all different.I also have no idea what a good representation of a straight man would look like. We're all different too.

Vanessa 10-08-2014 12:36 PM

If Christopher wins i bet Mark will be all over him like a rash. :joker:

In general, I don't think there is an overall representation. It's just different for different people, I know one very camp gay guy but then I know three very macho gay guys you wouldn't think were gay.

And then there's gay guys like Christopher. I don't think there is an overall representation. Just like there is no overall straight male representation anymore... straight males being... a) over the top masculine, hates everything that is feminine b) a joker, "cheeky chap", c) comes across as camp/gay, d) in touch with feminine side eg. using products, putting on makeup. e) masculine and feminine put together (I'd say that is probably becoming more common), people who go to the gym, work manually, but also take care of their appearance and are sensitive.

Rob! 10-08-2014 01:23 PM

I do see what people mean - but there's been a general criticism over the years about the only gay people going in being at the extreme levels of the spectrum.

Robodog 10-08-2014 01:29 PM

Nah Steven for me

I completely get what you mean :)

I like to call it the "Marco representation"

Another one we could say is not the OTT "camp" gay guy would be Daniel from BB5, him and Jason were the two biggest alphas in the house compared to the other guys.

This was my instant reaction to this thread...

You might as well be saying "is Ashleigh the best representation of a straight girl we've had for years?"

... It's irrelevant to his character. Completely. Any person who is being true to themselves and not deliberately altering or exaggerating their character is the best representation of themself as an individual. There's not really anything more to it than that.

Of course it would be fair to say that some people (of all genders, races and sexual persuasions) have exaggerated themselves and not portrayed the person they probably are on a Tuesday afternoon at ASDA... But, some gay men are genuinely effeminate and flamboyant. It's a true representation of their real personality and, therefore, no better nor worse a "representation of a gay man" than someone less camp like Christopher.

Achilles 10-08-2014 01:33 PM

No, but that is because of BB editing team. They fixated on his BS relationship with Mark when they should have fixated on his friendship with Chris.
THEN, he would have been a great "representation" for gay men.
I can read between the lines and know that Christopher is a good egg like Chris and Ashleigh, despite what BB choose to show and not show us.

Daniel. 10-08-2014 01:55 PM

Gay or not he is still one of the most irritating and dull housemates of all time.
