Couldn't use Windows 9 due to old companies being lazy and having a "If Windows version begins with 9_ script" it would have resulted in a number of bugs lol. So they went straight to 10.

Does anyone know what the deal is regarding re-installation? I build my own PC's so my hardware changes fairly regularly and, for that reason I have Retail Windows 8.1 rather that OEM...

If I accept the free upgrade from 8.1 to 10, does that mean I get retail 10 so can reinstall it when I change hardware? Or is it going to be locked to my current PC? And if it is... is it going to kill my 8.1 retail license?? Also, if it isn't locked to one PC, whenever I need to do a fresh wipde of the HD am I going to need to install 8.1 from the DVD and then download the upgrade all over again? Hmmmm.

So many questions and the answers don't seem to be available anywhere.

does this cover it?

You would have to own a retail copy of Windows 10 to change hardware however..

This is my concern really, or rather, that accepting the windows 10 upgrade will invalidate my 8.1 retail serial. Although, it does say that you can upgrade after a year, so I could just leave it until my next motherboard/processor upgrade (early 2016 probably) and then do it. Hardware lock is tied to the motherboard, if there is one, and I suppose I'll just have to suck up the cost of a full retail copy before I change it again.

Still hoping it's like-for-like though and I get a retail serial for 10 in exchange for retail 8.1... it would only be fair! I mean, they owe me! I actually paid MONEY for Windows 8.1. A feat I never accomplished with Windows 7. Or XP. ...or 98 :joker:. I paid for those with Pieces of Eight. Arrrr...
