Mum who put son with Down’s syndrome in washing machine says she had to flee her home

Quote:

Courtney Stewart hit the headlines when she posted an image of her son in a washing machine on Facebook.

The 21-year-old mum explained she took the photo after her inquisitive 2-year-old, Caleb, climbed into the unplugged kitchen appliance while they were playing peek-a-boo.

The image was reported to the police, she received a visit from social services and while neither authority pressed the issue, Ms Stewart was the subject of a backlash of abuse after the snap went viral.

She revealed: ‘A cruel Facebook page demonising me because I have a disabled child was set up in my name and the photo went viral, making me the world’s most hated mum.

Some critics even went as far to say if Caleb wasn’t removed by social services, they’d take him themselves.

The young mum was so frightened she even requested police watch her home in Erskine, Renfreshire.

When the threats didn’t stop, she packed up and left the property, only returning last week.

Ms Stewart admits she regrets taking the photo, in a chat with Mail Online, she blasts it as a silly mistake.

But she doesn’t feel she’s been treated fairly, adding: ‘What people couldn’t hear because the sound was removed was Caleb laughing during our rough and tumble game.

‘I didn’t deserve to be judged as a monster. Most upsetting is the thought that people pity Caleb having me as a mum – he is such a happy little boy and he couldn’t have a more loving family.’

Yes, playing peek-a-boo doesn't mean oh lets put a baby in a washing machine to play. there are other ways of playing peek-a-boo

Kizzy 17-08-2015 12:15 PM

My daughter was a bugger for this ... seriously :/

MB. 17-08-2015 12:15 PM

She didn't put him in there, he climbed in there and he found it funny. :umm2: You didn't read the article then.

the first thing you would do is get him out straight away :umm2:
she's getting hate for a reason so...

Liam- 17-08-2015 12:16 PM

If he climbed in there he climbed in there, there's no harm done really if the kid was laughing.. but, if they were playing peek-a-boo, was there much need to hold the door closed while he was in there?

Liam- 17-08-2015 12:20 PM

Also, I don't see what difference the kid having Down's Syndrome makes it doesn't exactly change the story in any way, to me that's just a tactic being used to get people to hate this woman even more.

That's what babies do. They explore, they learn things, they have fun. Direct your hate somewhere that's useful.

Crimson Dynamo 17-08-2015 12:22 PM

The utter stupidity of taking a pic and putting in it twatbook

she deserves all she gets the silly mare

Yeah i know, she can't expect everyone to be pleased about the picture, she must be stupid to think it won't be a problem. Pictures like that are bound to get hate and talked about. Everything gets shared on Social Media. don't feel sorry for her one bit.

Amy Jade 17-08-2015 12:28 PM

I honestly don't think she's evil, naive yeah but if she has been investigated and deemed fit to keep him then she's obviously not a crap mother.

Liam- 17-08-2015 12:37 PM

I don't think she should be demonised for this, okay yeah it's not exactly clever bragging about closing the door of a washing machine with your kid inside, but that's one moment, does it make her a bad mum? no, does it make her a bad person? definitely not, the over the top hate she's getting is a bit barbaric, the kid obviously wasn't hurt or ~traumatised~ as some people are making him out to be, I think it's about time people started looking at the bigger overall picture rather than taking one moment in time (Whitney promo) and running with it for all it's worth - which in this instance, is not very much.

I said the evil bit in anger didn't mean it in that way

But I think she's just stupid and I felt it was bang out of order to do even do that, some comments are OTT but mine was in anger and people do say stuff in anger. If I was her I would have taken the baby out of the washing machine straight away, wouldn't dream of shutting the door because to me that's cruel. She wouldn't have been in this mess if she wasn't silly enough to post it on social media.

Absolutely. Toddlers in general are always up to stuff like this, I feel sorry for this woman, another case of social media lynch mob strikes again

But it is her own fault for posting it on facebook herself,I agree Toddlers do things but the first thing you would do is get the baby out straight away, I mean anything could have happened you just don't know, if you know what I mean. I would still have been annoyed if he didn't have a disability because everyone is the same and I treat everyone the same.

Exactly this.

Stories like these annoy me so much. People are so willing to be narrow minded and spew hate at any chance they get. It's a complete non-story that has been spinned for people to vent their anger and faux righteousness to feel empowered at the expense of others, as it turns out people love demonising anything and anybody at any opportunity. It's utter bollocks.

Liam- 17-08-2015 12:54 PM

What is going to happen to a child in an unplugged washing machine? the door wasn't fully closed, it was being held closed, so the kid wasn't technically locked in, he was in no real danger.

Cherie 17-08-2015 12:54 PM

Petty sure alot of families have pics like these of toddlers in situations they shouldn't be in, it was naive of her to post it on social media given how easily people get offended and take any opportunity to have a go, but being driven from her house is OTT, I wonder if the people who have caused this realise how upsetting it is for her son to have to relocate somewhere else :umm2:

As i have posted earlier, the holes in the barrel can be sharp and damaged due to coins etc so it is no place for a child and he could have grabbed the door by error and gut shut in and then to open it it would need to be switched on

its immense stupidity
