Princess Michael of Kent has apologised after coming under fire for wearing a ‘blackamoor’ brooch to the Queen’s Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace, attended by Prince Harry’s mixed race fiancée Meghan Markle. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...or-brooch.html |
oh it looks good. Didn't know they're offensive. Hope it was a genuine mistake lol
|
Did Meghan take offense or are people taking offense for her
|
Meghan was pleased she didnt wear the full SS uniform I guess
|
The jewellery is portraying a black person not a white person with a black face though, how is that offensive

And the point that it is a representation of colonialist attitudes in imperialist Britain.
'Though full-lipped and somewhat broad-nosed, the African's facial features are partly Europeanized. Possibly based on a real individual, the London-based African model known as Wilson, the depersonalized figure calls to mind Van Ost's ‘Blackamoor’ and his kneeling position, which, as Kirk Savage and others have pointed out, denotes servility and deference.55 This was no doubt a reassuring and soothing theme at a time when fears of slave rebellion were widespread' https://academic.oup.com/hwj/article/64/1/162/600955 |
I don't know what her intention was but it's a strange brooch.
Even if it was of a white person... Funny thing to wear... |

Yes it from the past. She has said sorry. |
yeah kill all 19th century colonialists

How can a JEWELRY wear blackface? it's an object. If it was made black, than it's black.

The jewelry does have racist connotations for other reasons though and that's what the complaints are about. Personally I'd never heard of Blackamoor jewelery and I wouldn't have realised it was considered racist by some people, is it that widely known? I think it's reasonable to assume she just didn't know about it. |

You've capitalised 'BLACKFACE' in the title even though it has nothing to do with the story, if it wasn't a mistake then I don't see how it can be anything other than clickbait. |
