P.E

What is everyones opinion on the school lesson, P.E
Should it be a core subject?

My experience of P.E was very embarrassing. Imo I think its a way to get self-concious teenagers out in the cold in tiny shorts while the teacher stands all wrapped up.
Its also an excuse to embarrass the rubbish kids, in front of the good sporty kids.

I definately think this should NOT be a core subject, as I had to last 4 years of complete embarrassment. Its also not nice seeing other people embarrassed and having people shout stuff like 'OMG THANKS A LOT YOU RUINED THE GAME' etc etc

Opinions?

I think it should be a core subject, but the school P.E. departments should possibly have a variety of different things going on to suit different tastes. Some sports and forms of exercise are really fun for some, whilst not for others, and vice versa! Whilst those who love all of them can mix and match, choose whatever.

I understand it can be difficult for some P.E. departments to perhaps fund this and have the staff, but we always hear about how exercise is meant to be fun, etc., but the fact is for some it's just not. For some, it's not their thing! So having the above option, would, IMO, be a good solution. Of course, it may not happen and P.E. will just always be known as the way it is today... but I think it could work if schools had access to the money, which in a lot of cases I guess they don't! I don't think they should scrap it as a core subject completely because it can be fun and will allow more and more people to enjoy P.E.

I hated P.E (Physical Education)

P.E is riduculious. Sport is a talent and the majority of sports played during P.E are talent based. I am personally horrible at P.E and I always feel bad because I know I'm unwanted in whatever team I'm in because I do so bad! I also hate if you have to do athlectics or something, one and one and everyone watches, thats just intimadating.

I think P.E should still be a core subject as we all do need a little bit of exercise but like Ash said they should be varied like sport sports and then things like dance etc.

Sunny_01 22-05-2007 10:16 PM

I think that PE is important, but I dont think that people should be pushed to do things that are out of their ability which is what a lot of teachers do. They structure their lessons around a minority of kids who can do sports well and push the rest to keep up!

I think that lessons should be planned around different abilities and likes and dislikes. At least at my daughters school they can wear jogging bottoms and are not forced to show their legs off to all and sundry

Legend 22-05-2007 10:36 PM

It should definatly be kept as a core subject. Some people are bound to hate it but it doesn't mean they should get away with not doing it, some are better yes but that's life, people are always going to be better at things but you've still got to get on with it.

I don't see why P.E is any different to Science, i'm RUBBISH at Science but i still have to do 5 hours a week of it and when we do tests and everyone is getting C's and i'm getting my G, that's quite embarrasing and also when we do experiments and i have no clue, but i still do it and get on with it. I have the same view on Science as you do P.E.

With P.E you do get more choice so you can therefore choose something which will embarras you less whearas you get no choice in Science or any other subjects, it doesn't matter how rubbish you are at it, you're stuck with it.

Dan_ 22-05-2007 10:54 PM

I was going to make that exact same point Legend.

There does need to be more choice like at my school where we either got split into ability groups or they would provide about 5 different sports for people to do each lesson and there was also a proper gym so people could just go on a treadmill for the whole lesson which suited the people who were never any good but most schools arent as lucky and then there's always the interform competitions which most schools run.

I remember back when I was in year 9 most of the lads in my class who were any good at football were either injured or ill so we had a small squad and a rather than let the 6/7 of us that did want to play they made those who did not care and that were awful play a certain amount of time in the two games and that resulted in me having to come on as a sub midway through the first game with already a goal down and the other classes had only good players out so we were at a huge disadvantage and it was unfair on those that did want to play and those who did not, as much as it pissed me off that those who did not want to play put in zero effort I could understand how they felt as there was another subject I hated that I put hardly any effort into.

It should all be about choice of sports for me.

Sunny_01 22-05-2007 11:36 PM

Do you know what I had not even thought about it the way you describe Legend and Dan, and you are both right! I do think it needs to be tailor made as people are so concerned about their looks etc.. but your points are very valid indeed

Ruth 23-05-2007 07:58 AM

I absolutely think that PE should be a core subject. I hated PE at school, but I hated Maths too, and I wasn't allowed to get out of that!

Also, youngsters today are far less active than years ago, and obesity is a growing problem (no pun intended) in our society. If we removed PE from the compulsory curriculum, we would be getting rid of the only physical exercise that some people get.

I agree Laura:thumbs:

Many children really don't like a lot of P.E or Games, I remember being forced to play football and I hated it. I would stand there wishing that I was anywhere else instead. I just refused to kick the ball and just pretended that I did not see the ball coming in my direction.

I was placed as the defender a few times and the goal-keeper, whoever he was, knew I wasn't going to do anything, so it was a pointless situation.

Many are not good at running and I certainly wasn't, it just didn't interest me and even though, there was a few things I thought were okay at the time, I think that pupil's who are really not very interested, should be allowed to miss out on certain activities, especially if they really hate it.

and I did.

Do you also think people should be allowed to miss out on certain area's in English, Math, Science etc just because they hate it?

stacey 23-05-2007 03:02 PM

i love p.e and i think it should be a core subject because its all for exersize and keeping fit, i think different schools vary in the subject on what activities they do, i really dont like gymnastics in p.e but then i like football but others are the opposite of me they like gymnastics and hate football at least in p.e your not always doing the same activities all of the time

Chrizzle 23-05-2007 07:42 PM

Your not as likely to get embarrassed in Maths as you are in P.E though.
Its not that I hate it, I think the way its structured is ridiculous

Imo the only good way of keeping it, is if they change it.
Good group and bad group.
Keep the kids who wanna do it togehter, and the kids that dont together.

I think that English, Math's & Science are important subjects Legend. and many pupils in a school won't like them.

Schoolkids that don't like lessons like those mentioned, will probably mess around in the classroom and just do it badly, because they don't like it.

I do remember being forced against my will, to have to stand on a freezing football pitch, having to play a game of football, which I did not want to do.

I hated it and I hated P.E. too.

I bunked off while I was 15 & 16 years old.

I got my mother to write a letter about me not doing it, saying some made-up reason why I couldn't

My friends also did the same, as my idea was good:eureka:

sometimes you need to be sneaky, you know:wink:

I haven't done PE Since Year 10. And I don't think it should be a core subject. It hardly teaches students anything useful unless they want to be a PE Teacher or whatever. And besides, I'm active enough outside of school :p

GlitterEyes 24-05-2007 02:27 PM

I think it depends on the school itself whether it can be enjoyable or not. Just because someone is rubbish at basketball or netball doesn't mean they will be rubbish at high jump or something. If the school has limited PE sessions such as Football, Netball, Rounders and Rugby then I can understand why people dislike it but if they have widen subject areas like high jump, long jump, gym, dance, orienteering, golf, trampolining etc people can find their own area they enjoy. I think for the first few years it is important for kids to learn the basics being football and rugby for boys and netball and rounders for girls but as they develope they should be allowed to play what they want.

I think PE is very important because it is the only form of exercise some people get...some people play sports outside school but many don\t have access to facilities etc therefore need that regular hour exercise a week or twice a week. I believe that there IS a sport out there for everyone which they enjoy...being good at it doesn't really matter aslong as they enjoy it. If a wider range of subjects were put forward I am sure you would find one you enjoyed.

You will always get people who are "picked first" and if you are picked last or at that bottom end it can feel embarassing but you will get that time when its a quiz or something and the sporty types will be picked last also so it kind of evens itself out.

The only part I do agree with is the "sports kit" wearing shorts or little skirts in winter is pathetic and kids should be allowed to wear tracksuits/jogging pants etc aswell as jumpers as its freezing cold.

In most schools having girls doing "football" gets cringed at because its seen as a "boys sport" and schools which still have that attitude are pathetic...I'm not saying that girls would want to play rugby or boys would want to play netball but the options should still be there I think.

Chrizzle 24-05-2007 02:55 PM

I hate Maths, but dont think it should be taken out the core subjects.
I hate PE, and I do think it is.

Its a pointless lesson for those not wanting to do it.

GlitterEyes 24-05-2007 03:36 PM

I dont think it is pointless at all it helps things such as teamwork and co-ordination. What subjects are actually offered to you? Is there any sport you would play and enjoy? or is the schools facilities limited and your stuck playing one/two sports all the time?

I said its a pointless lesson for those not wanting to do it. It teaches them nothing.

I dont dislike sport, I dislike P.E. Theres a difference.

GlitterEyes 24-05-2007 04:04 PM

Ok so you play sport out of school hours then? You may not think it has teached you anything but I am sure it has. There are alot of things people dislike doing but its all part of growing up and learning things on the way.

Ruth*Star 24-05-2007 04:21 PM

I didn't do PE for 2 and a half years and the PE teacher said she would go to the head teacher if i didn't start doing it, so after being threatened i started doing it which it really isn't as bad apart from some taunts and some embarrassing moments.

GlitterEyes 24-05-2007 04:22 PM

How did you get out of it? or just didn't turn up? lol

Ruth*Star 24-05-2007 04:25 PM

I have Epilepsy so i played the 'i feel dizzy card' for 2 odd years and the teacher got sick of it so then she threatened me so i didn't want to get told off so i just started doing it.

GiRTh 24-05-2007 04:32 PM

I don’t think P.E. should be scrapped at all. I think this is a nother example of the youth of today wanting everything their own way. Keep it in and make them suffer

GlitterEyes 24-05-2007 04:34 PM

That worked for quite some time then the teacher will probably of been "scared" of pushing you incase something has happened. Was there any sporty subjects that you are told to stay away from because of your epilepsy? Not actually in school but in general..
