Is calling a female by 'woman' offensive?

As in saying 'woman' as alternative to calling the female by name. I don't think it is tbh, unless it's intentionally used to demean them. People get commonly called 'man' in conversation i.e. Hey man. So do you think it's bad to do that to females or is there no harm in saying it?

i feel like when it has that tone like 'woman! :oh:' it sounds a bit much but other than that no

i HATE when people call woman/girls 'females' though :oh:

Vicky. 31-05-2018 06:09 PM

Its hardly the same way as 'hey man' though. I guess if someone used it as 'hey woman' it might be ok but its generally not in that way at all  Tone and intent matter tbh

I would honestly rather generally be called bitch than woman, love, hun and so on. And often am :D

It depends on the context and tone

Agree. I call everyone man. I say 'Yeah man' as often as I say 'Yeah' I even call my own daughter 'man' from time to time.:joker:

i thought hey man, was more of a unisex term, hey woman just doesn't have the same contextual meaning.

arista 31-05-2018 06:51 PM

Its OK so long as its not said in a
aggressive fashion.....................

It’s funny how the most PC person on here when it comes to sexuality doesn’t see anything wrong with calling a female woman.

Do you mean when someone says "I was talking to that woman over there?" I wouldn't be offended by that.

No I mean being like 'Hey woman' or 'Listen woman'

Withano 31-05-2018 07:16 PM

I think anything could be offensive if you try hard enough really. But generally, no. Its rarely used with an intent to be offensive.

Ah right.....yeah, I wouldn't be impressed by that  if someone didnt know my name I would prefer them just to say "hey" and "listen".

Jason. 31-05-2018 07:17 PM

Don't GRIT your teeth at me like a dog, woman!

Amy Jade 31-05-2018 07:20 PM

I don't like it much personally although not enough to worry about it

In work irish men call the till ladies 'woman' and me and a few of the younger girls get called 'cutty' or 'dolly birds'

The Slim Reaper 31-05-2018 07:23 PM

user104658 31-05-2018 07:38 PM

Sometimes I'm like "WOMAN! MAN IS HOME! BRING FOOD!"

But I have to be honest and say that most of the customers don't like it.

Marsh. 31-05-2018 07:39 PM

I wouldn't say "offensive" but it's certainly rude if you're just shouting "Oi! Woman!"

Alf 31-05-2018 07:49 PM

"Hey woman, hey woman, why don't you come down here, and I'll show you a real man"

What film is that a quote from?
