Serena Williams has meltdown at US open finale

Quote:

Naomi Osaka became the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title when she beat Serena Williams 6-2, 6-4 in the US Open final on Saturday but the victory will be overshadowed by a climax in which Williams harangued the umpire at length after initially being accused of receiving coaching from the stands.

Osaka, 20, prevailed in the first major final of her career, thus preventing Williams from winning a record-equalling 24th grand slam title.

Williams was given a game penalty during the second set after a row erupted with umpire Carlos Ramos, who handed the American a code violation for illegal on-court coaching.

Quite sexist tbh. She's always been... shall we say... passionate!

But now she's had a baby we can say it's because of that!

Suppose it beats saying she must be on her period!

She's a disgrace, should be utterly embarrassed about her actions last night

Serena is my favourite women’s tennis player, she’s very passionate and I can see why this game meant so much, it’s her first grand slam final since her daughter and she’s not won the US Open in so many years.

Yes
Smashing her racket
as she was losing the game.

Typical of her

She has won so much, I appreciate it must be hard to lose, but you have to accept winning and losing with grace in sport

Crimson Dynamo 09-09-2018 10:37 AM

vile woman

just nasty

bots 09-09-2018 11:29 AM

awful behaviour, i hope she gets a suspension for it that ends her career. No place for that behaviour in sport

To be fair this is kind of nonsense as Serena Williams has been high profile in tennis for what? A decade or longer? And has been popular and celebrated. I'm not a huge tennis fan but as far as I know, she was black the entire time, and it's not a recent deleopment. I might be wrong, of course. Really nothing to do with race. People didn't like it when Andy Murray (a white male) was getting heated constantly in his earlier career and he was clearly told by his coaches etc. to reign it in. It's just not considered part of the sport, beyond some mild frustration during the game, it's supposed to be all hugs and handshakes at the end of the match.

She had a tantrum. Emotions get the better of players sometimes. That's happened in tennis many times in the past, and will happen many times in the future. It's like this forum on Monday if Ryan wins CBB. :hehe:

The unfair part though is accusing the umpire of being sexist. Stuff like that has consequences. You can't just throw that kind of accusation out without backing it up.

"Meltdown" give me a break that was some tame ass ****

I watched it live last night and I was starstruck. I think it's a miscommunication issue. TO him she got coaching, to her she didn't see anything. And then it went wild and she felt attacked in her character. Sometimes it shows even the biggest champions crack under the pressure. It all went very far, and she will learn her lesson.

I felt really bad for Naomi who is very shy in the first place. She played a stellar game and had to apologize for it, and that makes me mad. No one deserves to feel like this on any victory in their career. But I felt like Serena tried her best to make it right in the end to shift the spotlight to Naomi. And they had kind words for each other in press conferences.
But still, Naomi couldn't live it fully, she stood there sad and really emotional even though the boos were not for her. Hopefully she gets more grand slam victories to enjoy completely.

On the sexist stuff, I agree she should not have directed this at him. But to a certain extent she is right: dudes sometimes are way more vocal or "aggressive" towards umpires and yet the umpires don't take it as far. So I can understand the upset, but the umpire only applied the rules, and she knows that. Just wrong timing, her emotions took over.
