20 inches of rain is 500mm

London gets about 750mm in a year

The most the UK has ever got in a day is probably around 340mm high up in the Lakes

Twosugars 13-09-2018 07:29 AM

That's wet

Cherie 13-09-2018 07:36 AM

Is category 2 stronger or weaker....

Cherie 13-09-2018 07:38 AM

oh so it has been downgraded... all these people evacuated for probably nothing....we really need to get a grip on the weather hysterics :idc:

They have been told

RAINFALL: Florence is expected to produce heavy and excessive
rainfall in the following areas...

Coastal North Carolina...20 to 30 inches, isolated 40 inches. This
rainfall would produce catastrophic flash flooding and significant
river flooding.

South Carolina, western and northern North Carolina...5 to 10
inches, isolated 20 inches.
Elsewhere in the Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic states...3 to 6
inches, isolated 12 inches.

source: NOAA

40 inches of rain is more than most places in the UK get in a whole year!

Nicky91 13-09-2018 08:47 AM

I very much doubt you are and if you are who are you praying to and for what purpose?

Weather does not listen to humans mumbling under their breath ffs

praying for the people who live in those areas florence is going to hit

Nicky you are just expressing what is called a platitude because you think that is what you should say.

We were in North Carolina a few weeks ago, on holiday. Such a beautiful place, hope they all get through it okay.

true, we had also been in North Carolina when we were on holiday there, more like a roadtrip from Tennessee to south and then north Carolina, all the way up to the Niagara Falls

lots of beautiful nature places as well in both south and north Carolina, hope whatever of that gets damaged from this storm, will recover tbh

AnnieK 13-09-2018 03:54 PM

I spent a lot of time in C and NC. The family I worked for live in South Carolina but have family living in Wilmington NC right on Cape Fear. They have been hit numerous times by these storms. Its so beautiful there but the storms do hit them.

Cat 2 isnt too bad. It may even downgrade before it comes on shore. They always hype these things. It depends on where the wet side is and how fast it comes on shore. Cat 2 is not so strong and after a downgrade or two, will be a TS... those are rainmakers with some gusty winds, so will introduce flooding, but nothing were unaccustomed to in the South.

Nicky91 14-09-2018 09:00 AM

i've heard there is still a risk of landslides in some areas, due to the huge amount of rain water :worry:
