Does the coronavirus scare you?

I have to admit I kind of laughed the whole thing off the last couple of weeks I thought people were going a bit over the top

I felt flu and colds killed more people than coronavirus

I felt panic buying was really silly

I felt there wasnt a chance in hell of a lockdown

Then....this week my mindset has really changed. Im genuinely worried

So is anyone else scared?

Strictly Jake 13-03-2020 10:19 PM

The poll question was supposed to say does

LaLaLand 13-03-2020 10:30 PM

Not for myself but for elderly relatives of mine, some of who have very bad chests (one in particular). I want to wrap them up in cotton wool until it all blows over almost.

I'm making sure I'm keeping my hands nice and clean and what not best I can, but if I get it, I get it you know? Not much you can do seeing as it seems to be spreading like wildfire.

Oliver_W 13-03-2020 10:30 PM

I'm not scared for myself, my mental health is currently in the shitter so I don't particularly care if it drags me down :joker:

But I'm scared for my relatives, virtually all of my loved ones have conditions which won't mix well with the ole Covid.

Tony Montana 13-03-2020 10:34 PM

The more people that are infected, the more it does for me tbh.

Kizzy 13-03-2020 10:36 PM

A little but at the same time I'm a bit pissed off at the panic...my neice has stopped my sis seeing her daughter because she has a tickly cough! But my sis is asthmatic if she had coronavirus she'd have worse than a tickly cough :/ sis likes walking and says it was the damp air that triggered it off... now she can't see her granddaughter all week :(

I'm not really scared for myself but I'm terrified of unknowingly carrying it and infecting someone with a weak immune system.

Yeah this too... if I gave my mum it I'd never forgive myself.

Liam- 13-03-2020 10:39 PM

Increasingly so, but like what’s been said, not for myself, specifically for my mother who probably wouldn’t stand a chance if she caught it, I’ve become ocd overnight, I’m wiping everything with anti-bac wipes god knows how many times a day and I’ve already gone through a bottle of hand sanitiser since yesterday

Jordan. 13-03-2020 10:40 PM

Terrified now slam dunk might get cancelled

Strictly Jake 13-03-2020 10:46 PM

I just am dreading if i get it. My son is due to be born at any point in the next couple of weeks. Being a newborn baby he wont have a great immune system. My other 2 kids seem to pick up every bug and cold that go around and I could pass it on to them too. I wouldnt mind so much if it was just me but its not im really panicking. Watching newsnight made it worse. Saying it is our generations version of the blitz which I would have scoffed at last week but going shopping today and seeing rationing rules in place.....this has all become very real

Twosugars 13-03-2020 10:50 PM

Cant choose either option bc I'm not scared but also dont think people are overreacting.

Scarlett. 13-03-2020 11:13 PM

Like others, I'm not scared for myself, but my older relatives

smudgie 13-03-2020 11:50 PM

No panic.
There is no doubt I wouldn’t survive it, but all we can do is try and keep ourselves, family and friends safe.
I do worry for my daughter, she is vulnerable with her health issues and doesn’t have the opportunity to isolate indefinitely.
We are as prepared as we can be for a lockdown, and disruption, not much more you can do really.

user104658 13-03-2020 11:56 PM

Scared of the virus? No, it is what it is. Scared that healthcare systems will collapse and that there will be serious unforeseen economic implications in effectively "winding down" the world for a few months ... ? Well, I'm not UNconcerned :umm2:.

Also a bit concerned about what supply chains look like when people start to REALLY panic, given that shelves are emptying of basic staples already when not much is actively happening. Today noticed a lack of things like bread, porridge/oats, pasta, rice, eggs. Also supernoodles because people are daft and think you can live on things like that :umm2:.

And worried that critical services (like mental health services) are at risk of temporary closure... essential lifelines for hundreds of thousands of people, some of whom are going to end up in real danger when left adrift for weeks on end at an unsettling time.

It's never "time to panic" though, what good is that going to do? Panic is only going to contribute to health services being overloaded.

user104658 13-03-2020 11:58 PM

I can't pick either of those poll options though. I don't think most people are overreacting but I also don't think it's (ever) "time to panic".

No I can not
lets see what the week unfolds

I want Army in Control.
then you get your ration.

caprimint 14-03-2020 12:41 AM

Nah

LaLaLand 14-03-2020 12:45 AM

I mean it's human nature to worry about the fact that there's a virus spreading like mad across the world and it's good to worry in some ways as it means you'll be more vigilant, but I think the majority of people are imagining a much worse "illness" or symptoms than what they'll actually get, if they do get it.

For the mass majority of people it'll be the same deal as the usual, annual bad cold that I seem to always get every single year without fail anyway for about a week.

Babayaro. 14-03-2020 01:25 AM

No, it doesn't scare me. However, I wouldn't say people are overreacting.

I would say buying every single pack of toilet paper in the shops is overreacting

LemonJam 14-03-2020 01:58 AM

Not the virus itself, but the repercussions on the economy and the ability to travel.

Shaun 14-03-2020 04:37 AM

Why are people incapable of creating polls with reasonable options, lmao

Ammi 14-03-2020 04:48 AM

...my fears are not of the virus itself...like many others I have an older parent ...I’ve had a personal health incident in my own life and there are only two reasons that I survived it...one was obviously the medical care and the other was having the strength around me of the people I love...I fear that many with Coronavirus/severe cases, won’t have either of those things...for the first time in my life, I have a son who lives in another country and with travel restrictions etc, the thought that he may become ill and that I wouldn’t be able to get to him, to be with him, I can barely breathe when I think about it...I fear the effect on human nature of the virus and the panic buying and the shortages and the recessions that will come etc.../...I fear the impact on human psychology...

JerseyWins 14-03-2020 04:49 AM

A little worried only because of what it can do to older people. I don't want some of the older people in my family to be getting it.

There's still much fewer than 100 confirmed cases in NJ (I think between 25-50 or at worst not much more). But who knows how many are unconfirmed.

I need my sports back tho :suspect:
