If only he did not tweet on this topic.

[In a post on Twitter, the venue, in Totton,
near Southampton, said: 'Following the racist
comments made by comedian
Andrew Lawrence on Twitter we made
the decision to cancel his show.

'As part of a learning disability charity
Minstead Trust, we work hard to
promote inclusivity,
provide safe spaces for everyone and
have zero tolerance for racism.']

After receiving a backlash for the
comments, he then doubled-down,
adding: 'I can see that this has offended
a lot of people, and I'm sorry that
black guys are bad at penalties.'

Lawrence later took a swipe at
Rashford's campaigning to
encourage the Government to continue
giving out free school meal vouchers during the pandemic.]

it's not even original, he deserves all he gets

Shaun 13-07-2021 05:50 AM

I remember him once on Live at the Apollo. He was awful. Happy what little was left of his career is dead.

Ammi 13-07-2021 06:13 AM

…I have no idea who he is…he pretty much would have known that would happen, though…no venue/organisation would want to have that association and showcase his views that are aimed to offend…it feels as though he more wanted the publicity and his aim was to be cancelled because now people are more aware of him…

So you believe he should be cancelled from his job as a comedien because his material is offensive, but you'll happily watch a film with offensive material?

Shouldn't we just get rid of every film ever made with offensive material in it? We can't just single out one guy.

Ammi 13-07-2021 08:47 AM

…that’s not what I said at all, though …it feels as though he may have purposefully ‘joined a bandwagon’ with his material of something that’s very high profile atm with the racial abuse against some England players to ‘increase his profile in terms of being discussed etc…’….but I have no idea who he is or what his act is and he would know that the content of his comedy would alienate some venues/organisations, which it obviously has…

Tireur 13-07-2021 09:12 AM

I’d say that he has achieved his objective with those tweets,
prior to today I don’t think I’d heard of him, but I have now.

Cherie 13-07-2021 09:17 AM

He knew what he was doing obviously, yeah I had never heard of him either

So essentially you’re saying that he doesn’t have the comedy chops to succeed as a
household-name comedian in 2021, so he’s had to resort to an attempt to appeal to a niche market of brexit chavs and gammons. “The Jim Davidson Method” as it’s known. Also used by mediocre telly actors attempting to slide into politics.

Crimson Dynamo 13-07-2021 09:30 AM

Jimmy Carr is still working......

Nicky91 13-07-2021 09:32 AM

karma is indeed a ******* bitch

:hehe:

never even heard of this ''comedian'' till these tweets, and based on those tweets, glad he's been cancelled

If your post means that I think that he tried to get some cheap publicity by tweeting contentious remarks, then yes.
Whether he had the “comedy chops” to succeed I don’t know, as prior to this I’d not seen nor heard of him.

Nicky91 13-07-2021 09:43 AM

also it's not just the racist part, but ''wishing children to starve'' is also unacceptable :umm2:

…that might have been me who pondered that as well…only because up until today I had no knowledge of him so it’s a pondering rather than any type of accusation …and this topic would be considered very ‘bandwagon’ atm, very high profile….

…having said that, I’m sure that there are many comedians that I’m not familiar with, stand up is something that I don’t watch very much of…

I once saw a guy in a film have knives on his hands and kill teenagers in their dreams. They didn't even arrest him, in fact they let him make some more films where he killed even more people.

I've just realised, it was probably part of the act.

He even goes on the explain the joke and the structure/satire and how the comedy is in the subverted expectation. That’s not for everyone but it’s a cornerstone of satire.

And I’m not even a Jimmy Carr fan - I do think he leans a little too heavily on the “shocks” (like Frankie Boyle).

Three black football players not scoring on penalties and then saying “lol black guys are **** at penalties” is not ANY form of satire?

…I’m sure you understand this, somewhere deep down.

yes the distinction is that the comedian in question was not making a joke he was posting on twitter where as Carr is perhaps telling a joke but its a very fine line in this instance i think

Ammi 13-07-2021 10:06 AM

…the biggest impact atm seems to be that his agency have dropped him and those are the ones that would have got him all of his performance gigs…

Alf 13-07-2021 10:10 AM

Never Mind, it's only his living he's losing, his kids will just have to go without.Still it's worth it, as long as offended people on social media get some satisfactory justice.

It isn’t because the joke is the subversion not the statement. Carr’s joke wasn’t “African people have AIDS lol”. The BEST you could argue for this guy if being generous is that he’s an unskilled/unfunny comedian who was trying his best but doesn’t really know how to frame a joke.

He chose to make the joke, if he didn’t realise there was a risk of losing shows/money from being racist on Twitter then he’s stupid as well as unfunny, and he won’t be the first person to lose a job for stupidity.

I tend to agree with the above though; he’s aimed for publicity through controversy, made the decision to take a calculated risk, and whether that’s paid off for him or not remains to be seen. He may well be taken under the wing of the Lozza Fox/Katie Hopkins/Jim Davidson types.

He knows how to frame a joke, what you mean is, you don't like his jokes, which is perfectly fine, I don't like Jo Brands jokes, but when cancel culture came to take her away a few years ago, I didn't want her cancelled. Thankfully for her, she can sell tickets and bring in viewers, so she is capable of making money for people, so she's valuable and willing to tow the line of what is accepted. So she didn't get cancelled. Lawrence mocks the establishment with his comedy, he had to go.

user104658 13-07-2021 11:14 AM

Comedian Andrew Lawrence's shows are cancelled

He wasn’t “cancelled” though, no one went digging through old material to pressure his management into dropping him or anything like that, he made a current tweet by choice, people expressed their dislike of it, and his representation made the business decision to drop him.

Is that not their right? Should there be government mandates to stop private enterprises from following the course of action that they believe best protects their profits? That’s very lefty, Alf.
