Parents' disgust as Labour council hires actor in rainbow coloured monkey
costume with fake penis and nipples to appear at library event encouraging
children to read

  • Redbridge Libraries set up the event and has since apologised for the costume
  • Full investigation has now been launched by the council to get to the bottom of it
  • Labour councillor Jas Athwal apologised and tweeted saying he was 'appalled'

Although the library has now apologised for the costumes they initially said,
'if you've got it, flaunt it,' on social media earlier in the day.

Parents have voiced their disgust after a Labour council hired an actor in a
rainbow-coloured monkey costume with a fake penis and nipples to appear
at a library event for children.

The Redbridge Libraries Summer Reading Challenge run by Redbridge Council
in east London set up the event but the library has since apologised for the
'inappropriate' costume.

How did anyone think this was acceptable for children :umm2: I mean lose the fake tits and penis but even the face of the costume is not really child friendly

Nicky91 13-07-2021 09:28 AM

someone who dresses up as a clown i do not take serious at all

also i don't see the problem with this whatsoever, seems nice and colourful anyway which is good as children like vibrant colours overall

as for the fake penis, you can definitely see that is fake, and the tits are also definitely fake (or well where are they as i cannot see them)

but yeah lose the fake penis, and it is no problem for me, but just removing that, in light of PC world etc

good idea from Labour anyway, needs to be polished out a bit (but only like i said a mere bit)

This is the issue though, not the rainbow outfit?

bots 13-07-2021 09:47 AM

nicky can always be relied on

ThomasC 13-07-2021 09:49 AM

I laughed. It’s only the penis that is an issue, but one could say it’s sex education

just my own opinion, i never take anyone serious who appears in such a ridiculous costume

bots 13-07-2021 09:53 AM

it's clearly not only the penis that is the issue. If someone chooses to dress themselves like that to interact with children, the problem is with the person doing it.

Ammi 13-07-2021 09:54 AM

…it’s been apologised for which is good and obviously a ‘what were they thinking’ decision…

…no children, if you’ve got it then you don’t publicly flaunt it because that would lead to an arrest and criminal charge…you keep it tucked until you’re in your own private space…and ‘flashing’ intimate body parts publicly is very concerning…/..Wayne Couzens….so why on Earth someone would be ‘imitating’ that action with children as an entertainment thing….anyways they’ve apologised and that’s as much as they can so, having been so misguided…

Blame the Labour Party

Exactly bots. I have absolutely no issue with my kids seeing fake genitals, like (to use a convoluted example) if say we were driving down the street in the evening and saw some people on their way to a party or hen/stag night wearing a costume like this, they would be absolutely creased up laughing at the fake knob, and there’s no issue with that because the intent of the costume is to be worn to an adults night out.

Would I want my kids around someone who would CHOOSE to wear a costume with a fake penis to an event specifically aimed at kids? **** no. Massively questionable.

Alf 13-07-2021 10:14 AM

This is normal now LT, embrace it. We'll all be dressing like this by the end of the decade.

On this note Ammi, and wondering if this is a common issue or just a local disturbing epidemic, but… have you ever encountered a problem with kids (boys) sending dick pics to girls in primary school?? I know it’s obviously a massive issue for older teens and adults but there’s been a bit of an issue with it here recently. Started off with one of my daughters classmates sister getting bombarded with them by a boy in her class (they’re 14)… to add to the drama there, the boys younger brother is also in their class which has caused some issues…

But then also recently, her friend from round the corner called her distressed because some random kid not even from around here, who is friends with two boys from their class, sent her pictures. They’re 11/12 ffs! And in message groups there are constant dick-pic references, and in a video one boy sent to the group (an innocent enough video) other male classmates are in the background shouting “Send her dick pics! Send them dick pics!!”

I really didn’t expect to encounter this at primary school. She’s off to high school after the summer and it’s surely only going to get worse :umm2:

Ummm :umm2:

Cherie 13-07-2021 10:38 AM

I expect he was booked on the basis that he was colourful, I would doubt anyone at the library was expecting that!

Niamh. 13-07-2021 10:45 AM

The face mask is pretty terrifying as well tbf

…we’ve really become more involved in E-Safety at Primary level more because of the age range of primary schools being extended with the phasing out of Middle Schools….it’s opened up a lot of safeguarding that we hadn’t previously encountered so much…and I have to say, quite a large amount in those two higher years of 5 and 6 and especially year 6….obviously there’s a lot more body awareness with things like periods starting more at Primary school ….hmmmmm, not specifically what you’re experiencing, I have to say that many related issues have been more with girl students in the content that they’ve posted and inappropriate sexual language and also with online bullying, we’ve mainly had girl online bullying and had to speak to groups and parents…we’ve had very little ‘boy related’ safeguarding in any online respect…so just a specific group thing…?…are the school being very helpful…?…

Ammi 13-07-2021 10:53 AM

…just out of interest, TS…why is the boy’s younger brother in the class as well…are they step siblings and he’s only slightly younger but the same year group…?….

Smithy 13-07-2021 11:02 AM

The council didn’t hire the performer a charity did

Quote:

Redbridge Libraries acknowledged the lapse in judgement and apologized for hosting the performance, but shifted the blame onto the charity Vision. It was they, rather than the borough council, who were responsible for organizing the event, the statement said.
Perhaps update your title LT? Wouldn’t want fake news spread :)

Sorry if this was clear as mud :joker:. So, my daughter is in a class with the younger sister of the 14 year old girl, and the younger brother of the 14 year old boy, who are involved in a “more serious” case of multiple pictures being sent and other harassment (police involvement etc.) and this has caused some issues within my daughters class as 1) the whole class is aware of what went on and 2) obviously the boy is backing his brother, the girl backing her sister etc.

It’s unrelated to the picture my daughters friend was sent (by a boy their age) and the general inappropriateness of dick pic “threats”. There’s been a tonne of other stuff with the boys - discussion of (hardcore, often niche) porn, descriptions of porn they’ve seen, mimicking scenes and… err… dialogue? Also some incidents of inappropriate touching (boys using physical games to grope, basically) although that part at least was nipped in the bud.

The rest of it, the school has handled abysmally, I could honestly write an entire thread just in that. My daughter has obviously finished there now and my younger daughter is at another primary school, so we thankfully no longer have any direct involvement with the school, but they have been frankly shocking on various fronts. The head teacher has left as of this summer too, but I’m quite tempted to email the school next term to tell them what’s gone on this year, along with the messages and videos that I have saved, just so that they’re aware. There’s every chance the culture will persist with the current batch of older kids. Hopefully the new head will be more receptive than the one who is leaving - who wanted nothing to do with any of it.

Its not my title it belongs to the DM

"A full investigation has also been launched by the council to get to the bottom of how taxpayers' money was used to hire the actors. "

Ammi 13-07-2021 11:12 AM

…I did read about the charity…(…I think it’s in the DM link…)…but wasn’t sure if it was this cancelled gig or another one ….

…it is strange though…(…because iI’m not aware of him but a few seconds google said that he was a ‘right wing comedian’….and that the charity represents learning disabilities…?….and they ‘promote inclusivity and provide safe spaces for everyone’…so the choice they made in him always seemed quite incompatible even without what has led up to this….

…why is the smallest bit of research not done….just silly and could have avoided the choice in the first place…

Oh wow it’s almost like the DM used a title like that knowing it’ll get the gammon upset!
