Ice Hockey Star Adam Johnson dies after freak accident during game

Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson has tragically died after a collision with a Sheffield Steelers player led to him have his neck sliced with a blade.

Despite best efforts he was unable to be saved.

That is an absolute tragedy.

Awful, I know this has happened before in America a couple of times but quite a few years ago. Very traumatising for everyone involved

UserSince2005 29-10-2023 11:47 AM

He was an absolute fitty. What a shame.

surprised they do not have to wear some neck guard if this has happened before

AnnieK 29-10-2023 12:58 PM

How awful.....so traumatic for all the players on the ice and spectators who witnessed it.

Yeah just looked and it was considered after the last time it happened in America but wasn't agreed, both players who it happened to survived

On February 10, 2008, in a game where the Florida Panthers were playing the Buffalo Sabres, Zedník suffered a severe and life-threatening injury. Teammate Olli Jokinen was tangled up with Sabre Clarke MacArthur and lost his balance in front of Zedník. Zedník was skating past as Jokinen fell, and his skate blade accidentally made contact with Zedník's neck, slicing his common carotid artery open and causing it to expel a trail of blood onto the ice as Zedník reacted quickly and skated to the Panthers' bench. He was immediately attended to by Florida trainer Dave Zenobi, who took him to the locker room for treatment. Paramedics, who are on standby at every NHL game, stabilized Zedník while the home team doctor Les Bisson controlled the bleeding. Bisson noted that Zedník appeared to be in shock but was not near death, as he was alert and responsive.[1] Zedník lost five pints of blood (2,3L).[9] He was transported to hospital on emergency run, his status being published as stable after leaving the arena.[10] The game was delayed for more than 20 minutes as the zamboni was needed to help remove the blood from the ice. The announcement over the public address speakers at HSBC Arena that Zedník was in stable condition and en route to a Buffalo, New York, hospital sparked a prolonged standing ovation from the Buffalo fans as the game went on as planned.
...

Zedník's injury drew comparisons with a similar injury suffered in 1989 by Clint Malarchuk, who was a goalkeeper for the Buffalo Sabres. Both injuries prompted discussion about neck guards and player safety in the NHL. At present, team doctors (practitioners of sports medicine) are trained in trauma care and are required to be seated behind the home team bench at every game.

Looks like a deliberate kick :O

MTVN 30-10-2023 04:36 PM

I'm not looking but apparently the police are now investigating and the opposition player has a history of violent action

the video is not gorey, but it does show the player in question raising his leg at an astonishing angle as he fell

UserSince2005 30-10-2023 08:57 PM

Omg seen this video. It was murder!

[QUOTE=MTVN;11363527]I'm not looking /QUOTE]

why?

Mystic Mock 31-10-2023 03:50 AM

RIP.

And to add, I hope that the opposition player didn't deliberately go out of his way to hurt Adam Johnson, because if so he should face murder charges.

Thought it might be very gory - I've seen footage of an accident like this before and it was horrific because they lose so much blood

I watched it after what Cherie said though and I agree that it looks slightly deliberate

This is so sad... RIP Adam. Matt Petgrave should be charged with manslaughter at the very least. He has a history of dirty gameplay and penalities.

Here's a video of him using his feet to trip someone up:

It's sad but I don't think he should be charged with MS.

It doesn’t look good at all

All sports have these dangerous lose cannon types and it’s always the others who get hurt

I mean if the kick was intentional, then that's literally what it is

Yeah it's so sad. The UK are making neck guards mandatory from 2024 now but it's just tragic that it took an incident like this to make it happen. It should have been essential since forever.

Adam Johnson death investigators arrest man on suspicion of manslaughter

Vanessa 14-11-2023 03:56 PM

They should wear something to protect the neck. It's very exposed.

Beastie 14-11-2023 03:58 PM

Sounds like something from Final Destination. RIP X
