The UK Parliament Gaza Vote 21/Feb/24 (Speaker Lindsay Hoyle)

The SNP Vote was rejected

But the Speaker of the House
has amended the Governments Bill
and the Labour Bill.

So the Labour Bill could win.

Outside Parliament
There are Loads of Protestors.

[Sir Lindsay Hoyle faced calls to resign
and for his predecessor John Bercow
to return after the Speaker took
an exceptional decision to allow
multiple Commons votes on the
Israel-Hamas conflict.

The Commons Speaker sparked uproar
on the SNP and Conservative benches
after he announced he would select
Labour’s bid to amend the SNP motion
calling for an “immediate ceasefire” in
Gaza and Israel.

It had been expected Sir Lindsay
would select just the Government’s
amendment seeking an
“immediate humanitarian pause”
to the Israel-Hamas conflict,
which could pave the way for a
more permanent stop in fighting.]

What an absolute farce in parliament at this moment in time.

The useless Speaker has created chaos.

What a mess this whole vote on Gaza is turning into.

arista 21-02-2024 05:36 PM

The Conservatives & SNP have walked out.

arista 21-02-2024 05:40 PM

Now it is Labour and SNP motions

Conservatives have pulled theirs out.

bots 21-02-2024 05:46 PM

What a mess.

Now they're voting on whether to sit in private.
Asked for by the Cons.

Israel's Netanyahu must be rolling about in hysterics if he's watching this childish playground nonsense on such a serious issue .

arista 21-02-2024 06:02 PM

MP's now voting on to Sit In Private,

arista 21-02-2024 06:04 PM

Hoyle is back

joeysteele 21-02-2024 06:35 PM

He's a very poor Speaker.

This today though has shown parliament at its worst.

On what has become and will continue to be, one of the most concerning and dangerous situations for the Middle East and the wider world.
A serious issue, turned into farce in the UK parliament.

The government looking ridiculous.
Labour with a hollow victory..
The SNP rightly aggrieved although they were going to vote for their own motion and then too support the Labour amendment over the Con one.
So a bit of unnecessary hysterics.

So with the government pulling their own amendment seconds before the vote .
More than likely in my view, because many Con MPs were going to vote too for the Labour amendment.
So an abandonment of government in the end.

Childish and ridiculous.
In my view.

They were all grand standing. It has done nothing to improve the already low opinion most people have of them

OhI agree with that.

However, the SNP were on opposition debate day, bringing a motion on a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.

Labour with Starmer, to save a rebellion, was to put forward their own amendment to the SNP motion.

Then when Labour's was known.
The Cons decided to put an amendment of their own.
Just to add to the circus.

Then when it, in my view looked like the SNP would go through with the Labour amendment in place too.
That many Con MPs likely to support it.

The Cons pulled their amendment barely seconds before the votes were to be put..

That is shocking governing.

So much for improving government with integrity and being more professional, which Sunak claimed he would bring to government.

This was all because the Conservatives withdrew
their Bill.

But this is because
they heard the Labour Party
put pressure onto L. Hoyle.

There's no need at all for any problems or issues to arise on serious matters like international conflicts.

I say again, anything like this of international disputes, conflicts etc
Should be a freevote for ALL MPs.

On issues like this every MP should be able to vote according to their own conscience.
Not to the whims and orders of their Party leadership.

The Country is torn on this issue.
MPs of all Parties also are.

Crimson Dynamo 22-02-2024 07:22 AM

It was reported yesterday BY THE BBC Nick Watt, Newsnight's political editor,
wrote: "Senior Labour figures tell me @CommonsSpeaker was left in no doubt
that Labour would bring him down after the General Election unless he called
Labour’s Gaza amendment.

The message was: you will need our votes to be re-elected as Speaker after
election, with strong indications this would not be forthcoming if he failed to call
the Labour amendment."

yeah, the whole thing stank of corruption

joeysteele 22-02-2024 07:56 AM

I think a lot of nonsense is being thrown about.

This useless Speaker laid down his decision.
All Parties knew it well before the debate started .

Stephen Flynn was moaning from the SNP but stated he would be supporting Labours amendment and was pleased Labour had found a backbone.

However the debate was held, ALL Parties participated.
Knowing it was the SNPs motion with both the Labour and Con amendments likely voted on too.

In my view, the Cons realised, enough of their MPs would also with the SNP support the Labour amendment not the government amendment.

So seconds before the voting the Cons pulled out of the vote and debate

Frankly we had far more than 2 amendments from all Parties during Brexit.
So why should an issue of conflict internationally not be represented across all main Parties

However I still say
All should be freevotes on these matters.
Not Parties whipping MPs and trying to make them vote against their own conscience.

The SNP motion, wouldn't have got Con votes, it could have got anything around 70 Labour votes.
However would have been lost totally without the amendments.
The SNP would never have supported the Con amendment.

The government abandoned governing.
Because their amendment was going to be defeated.

The SNP motion with the Labour amendment was voted through
On a hollow victory.

Having said that, I'll lose no sleep if this Speaker has to go
I've never thought he's done a good job.
Relating to both sides of the house .
