Hurricane Season 2024

Oh my gosh hunnys the water is so lovely and warm here in the Caribbean already and it’s only June 1st, the start of the season.

I reckon there’s gonna be so big storms this year when the waters get even hotter

Crimson Dynamo 01-06-2024 08:32 PM

The predicted season is very active.

well it destroyed some very small islands North of Grenada (Carriacou got a direct hit for 5 hours) and is now Cat 5 it is heading directly to Jamaica but wind sheer will reduce it down to a 2/3 by the time it hits Wednesday - still bad but not catastrophic

It’s heading for our son’s house in Florida .. cars in garage, all windows boarded up , pool furniture screwed down , food and supplies bought in ..

Ready for anything… we visit them in a couple of weeks so hopefully everything goes well

Hopefully they (FL/Tampa) are better prepared than we were for the power outages. We were out for 5 days. Ours was barely a Cat 2. Praying for all of the people in FL and that your son's home gets through OK

Florida is a wonderful state (normally) but also these hurricane are nothing out of the ordinary tbh

i mean they are closest to the Caribbean, and those islands got many devastating hurricanes (even earthquakes)

not a weather expert, but i think their humidity as well as hot weather and then cooler weather coming from the sea collide that are like the perfect ingredients for hurricanes to occur

:(

They said it would be Cat5

but it is Cat3 or less

No good reporting in the Dark

It's better to see any Damage in Daylight.

Apparently the water rose to 23feet at one point? But it looks like it's going back to cat 2! Supposedly

Category 3 is still life-changing for a lot of people, will impact insurance rates for all, but will be particularly hard for areas that haven't seen this severe of weather in a while. That's when all the trees that have weakened root systems from over the years fall on your house because there wasn't just the right amount of wind to take them down (yet...)

Most of our problems were due to down trees. Much of that was lack of proper vegetation management per our power distributor, and so they got into serious trouble over this... I imagine Florida is more ready than we were as they also bury their lines more often, but it took way too long to get back power for most people after a Category 1~2, which isn't as severe...

 "Just a little roof damage"... always good to hear.

We're still seeing lots of people finally getting around to their roofs and our storm was in July. Hopefully they have no problems finding a proper contractor.

3 million out atm... hopefully their power loss is connected closer to the main grid/hub and not localized damage. It takes forever to get back when it is localized... but if they have a generator, even better.

It looks like Tampa is getting the same cold-ish spell (mostly at night)... For us in the south, "cold" is 50-69 degrees...so about 10C-20C... I actually turned on heater this morning to check to see if it is functional for the winter and burn off any dust.. so that will help at least with sleeping at night. It is very difficult to sleep with the heat and humidity... at least that part will be more bearable while they all work to recover.
