My most recent phone was a lemon from the start with a crap touch screen and it ended up also with a cracked screen (that bothered me much less). But yeah imagine having to correct paragraphs of teeny forum text with a sh*tty touchscreen.

A few years later and we finally upgraded to this beauty  I have a good camera, so that wasn't the biggest perk for me, but it does admittedly take good pictures. I've been going out in the evenings and capturing shots of the neighbors Christmas lights... Husband and I both upgraded during a Black Friday sale:

A friend asked me today to search for a "dumb phone" for them after telling them we upgraded. (I used to sell and activate phones once upon a time.) I thought it would be fun to see what everyone else here is currently rocking.

Even the battery life?

Livia 04-12-2024 10:40 AM

I have an iphone 16 work phone. my own phone is a Motorola. I am not someone who lives on my phone... they don't interest me.

bots 04-12-2024 10:50 AM

i have an iphone 13 pro max so its been years since i upgraded. Battery health is at 96% so i don't see any reason to upgrade for whats currently being offered.

AI on my phone just doesn't appeal, i use my mac as a main computer rather than windows these days because i don't want to be forced into using AI in windows

Yeah me neither, I had one once but I just find Galaxy's a lot better to use and much more user friendly

well for a start there are so many more manufacturers and devices to choose from and also Apple is not open sourced so its far less customisable

Plus you are not paying through the nose for a device just to get the name

Samsung, Google, OnePlus, Nothing Phone, Motorola, Xiaomi, Oppo, Huawei, Nokia to name the main Android manufacturers

I only have an iphone because it's a free work one. I would never, ever buy one. I remember seeing a documentary on TV about people who are junkies of Apple stuff. When they showed them pictures of Apple's products and looked at their brainwaves, they had the same reaction as people who are members of fundamentalist religions who were shown religious images. Thought it was interesting and worrying in equal parts...

I have a Redmi.

The new Motorola Moto G35 5G is just £129 and its battery lasts almost 2 days

bots 04-12-2024 01:34 PM

i think the must buy apple still exists but it's not as strong a thing as it once was. I needed to buy into both environments because i was developing for both. These days, i'm most driven by who spies the least on what you are doing and i think that is a constant battle

No problem with the battery life.
I think it’s an iPhone 8.
Could be way off the mark mind, was a present from my ex daughter in law and son years ago.

Beso 04-12-2024 02:27 PM

I know it's a samsung, but I honestly havnt got the first idea what model it is.

Could do with advice though, what charger do I look for, I keep going to the shop without my phone or glasses so always end up with to small an insert.

 I was going to suggest a Motorola to the friend (if they waffled and stayed with smart phone) because it is less of the nonsense and not such a huge investment... supposedly they still make great phones

I was literally going to say... oh so you're going to love Windows 12, then...

I avoided Samsung because I feel like when we did use them we paid for flagship top of the line hardware with a badly optimized (and bloaty) version of Android. It ended slowing down after about a month or so of usage... for power users anyway. We were on LG until they stopped making phones. I'm impressed with the Oneplus so far and it blows LG out of the water...

Also in the US, the evil corporations have trained people here to upgrade about every 2 years. I think it's been a decade since it's changed, but it's still habit, but we used to get subsidies to buy a phone when doing contract renewals (surprise surprise, every 2 years) ... so they sometimes don't offer the storage options that are available in Europe, for instance. So when people install a lot of things or upgrade the OS, there's a major risk they literally run out of space or deal with massive lag, so it tickles their urge to upgrade anyway. Especially if the phone doesn't take a memory card... (sorry, that was nerdy)...

We're the same, that's why we buy a flagship and then ride it out. I think the longest I've gone (or been able to due to hardware failure) is 4 years. Husband's battery was shot and since my screen was already crapping out. We could replace his battery easily, but my screen was not worth the hassle and we have always upgraded as a nerdy couple thing... technically, no pun intended.. these were for our Anniversary coming up this month. Will be 12 years as a married couple but we've been living together since '05 and this was what we have always done.

I was in web-development for a number of years on both sides, so I get it. I'm more on the graphic end these days and trying to work my life more around my child, but am missing web... even made a custom stylesheet for TiBB... as painful as that was to style the tables...

The latter I think is a losing battle depending on your career/hobbies. If it's online related at all, there's almost no point. The background check sites have email addresses and phone numbers to spin off accounts I haven't had since my teens. Which is kind of nice, I can go back and go "oh those were the days..." ... but if you are not really "on" the web... stay off  For us forum weirdos, maybe that is hopeless...

You'd love my story then of when I applied to the Apple store and went through the "interview" process. TLDR: It was a group show how you love everything about Apple event and it really was joining a tech religion... We all had to be there at 5am (blasphemy) and we were all crammed in the same room watching Apple feel good stuff. At the time, a few major tech shops were copying this corporate Koolaid, so they're not the only ones, but definitely the originators. People were told to stand up in front of the group in small teams and compete to show who was the most gung ho (basically) about their products, but more importantly, had the most magnetic personality that fix the corporate motif. If you were an Apple fanatic, that was a huge bonus but mainly it was whittled down based on acting skills. For a sales job. At the Apple store. Crazy ****.

How old is your phone? The newer Samsung are USB C chargers.

Benjamin 04-12-2024 05:18 PM

iPhone 16 max pro. But only because my iPhone 12 finally ran out of the will to live. Will prob be another 3/4 years before my next phone.

I am not as shocked as I should be... My favourite term there is 'corporate Koolaid' LOL... Brilliant.

It's probably micro if before USB-C, it'll look like this:
