Suspicious caller at the door

So about an hour ago we had a suspicious caller at the door. I didn't open it, just looked through the peephole and asked who it was. Youngish guy wearing dark clothing including a hat pulled down low and facing away from the door. He said was I the householder and I said no, what do you want? He said oh no no it doesn't matter, I'm just in the area fitting security systems, and then he scuttled off really fast. I reported it. It was extremely suspicious.

Unless you're expecting someone don't open the door. It could be thieves. It does look very suspicious.

We never open the door to random calls.

Yes, it's the best way.

It's the best way , robbers & criminals are trying all sorts these days. What's worrying....some are even trying to blow torch door handles off ,but thankfully most modern doors block them from succeeding.

I have a big 'beware of the dog' sign on my gates with a bell and that's where people ring from. If they ignore the sign and come inside I send the dog out to meet them. We're in the middle of the countryside and my OH is sometimes away and for the last 5 or 6 years I've been very cautious of anyone coming here uninvited.

I am terrible - my front door is always unlocked if I'm home (unless I'm in bed) - my friends will just walk in. I do have a chime on the door when it opens but I am a little bit rubbish with security. I hear horror stories and think I should get better but I always just shut it too and forget to lock it. I always answer it if someone knocks too - I'm too nosey not to

I never lock mine either except when i go to bed, if Luke comes home after we go to bed most of the time he forgets to lock the door  The dog would go mental though if someone she didn't know came into the house so we have that alarm

What if she’d opened the door and they’d stolen Kate! We’d never finish the music game. :worry:

…I don’t really know that we knew the full details but this is what it was…

‘my flatmate ended up being a psychopath held me hostage this morning and I had to call the police.’

Ammi 20-02-2025 03:36 PM

…I mean, in the middle of the quiz as well…we’d almost held him hostage to agree to run it and then….again…what bad luck, poor Smithy…

Awful, that’s not you want from a flatmate.
