Braces... and need questions answering
Okay i went to the orthadontist and they said i have to firstly wear a plate in my teeth for 4 months to fix my "overbite" and get my teeth straighter, i will get my plate in on the 22nd June. Then after i am going to have braces (train tracks) for about 15 months. The orthadontist said i should be done before im 18 which is good.
But some questions, what are plates?? are they comfortable? Is it Painful? Does it make you talk funny? Also, what foods can i eat? because i absoloutley love my food so i will be pissed off if i cant eat some stuff. TRhe orthadontist said i cant take the plates off, but thats stupid, what if im eating or if im brushing my teeth? I also need to have 2 of my teeth removed before my plate goes in, to make room for it. Im really not looking forward to these few months. It sounds horrific, i start college in September and i dont want to look like a loser who cant speak properly and is depressed  |
Be brave :) I think I'll be needing them soon too before its too late for me

Are plates like a retainer, if so then it depends on the thickness, the thicker they are the more you will lisp. But you get used to it, also it only hurts a bit sometimes but thats what makes your teeth nice.
Surely if its a retainer then you can take it out when brushing ur teeth but try and keep it on when eating, your teeth will get into place quicker that way, it's **** hard to eat when you have it to begin with but after a while its easy. So perhaps start trying to wear it when eating when you get it. Getting teeth out aint too bad, I've had six out overall. Yeh it aint nice but it only takes a couple of seconds to get them out. & you won't be depressed, its a brace.. not partically horrific. Long post tadah |

Ive already had 3 teeth out, its fine at the time, but the afterpain is horrible, not to mention you cant eat because of the numbness. |
I think braces are cool. i liked mine.

I'm not really sure about your circumstance, but general advice:
Braces hurt when you first get them, your teeth ache because they're moving around and for a couple of days you can only eat yoghurts, ice cream etc, nothing solid, eventually bread and soft cheese but within a few days you're back to normal. They tell you to avoid chewing gum, toffee and other sticky foods, and carrots, apples and other hard foods. To be honest, so long as you eat them carefully, you can have any of these things. I spoke the same way I did before I had my braces; I had mine in for a year and a half, just remember that they're quite common these days and when you go to college there will be people there who have braces too, you're not going to be socially outcast just because you have braces! It sounds scary when they go on; the only times they hurt are when you first get them and any time you have to get them tightened - but it's more like an irritating ache as opposed to excruciating pain! :spin2: |

Only soft food.... bloody hell i will die from starvation almost , no chewing gum?? this really is getting worse :(

I HAD THEM...
its not painfull but its annoying for the first week. its like a metal bar thing that goes accros the roof of your mouth, and you sometimes have to tightern it. it dosnt make you talk funny, just makes you suck your spit in alot, as you cant swallow right for arround a week lol. you dont take them off but its not hard to clean them (mouthwash) lol.... but very annoying |
I didn't need braces. I was jealous of everyone getting their braces off...
I want them. The only advce I can give, don't put a retainer under your pillow... it will brake and it won't be my fault. :D |
Invisalign = the way forward
Dentist told me I needed them for my bottom teeth. I wasn't cool enough for braces so got invisalign instead |
I have no idea what plates are.For braces they hurt for a few days after you get them but then they're fine. I just ate icecream for like 3 days, lol! All I ever avoided was chewing gum and apples with braces but that was it.And getting teeth out doesn't hurt,I've had a few and you just feel numb.

i had plates ones cos i sucked my thumb so ended up with a big overbite i had to have 4 teeth removed before i had them to make space for the teeth to move back you can have things like chewing gum and stuff as long as you careful but be warned you may need to carry a toothbrush and paste around with you cos if it gets stuck you'll need to brush them clean the only no no i found was toffees i actually broke my wires on 2 separate occassions on a toffee
they do cause a bit of pain esp at first when your still adjusting to them and after any adjustments to the wires to make them a bit tighter but otherwise on the most part you will be fine |
Having it over the roof of your mouth sounds horrible and uncomfortable.
|
you get used to it at first its just like errrrrghhhh yuck once your used to it you hardly notice its there
|
oh and the one i had was like a plastic plate that is shaped to your mouth (the worst part for me was having the impressions done with this putty stuff so they have the right shape for your mouth) with the wires running through it you only feel the parts of those actually on your teeth not over the roof of mouth
|
Can you see the plates when you smile?
Also which is more confortable, the plates or the actual braces? |
nope i had clear ones and where they sit is right up on roof of mouth behind the teeth so unless you are leaning your head back with mouth wide open all people will see are the wires across teeth
i've only had the plates ones and only really found them a bit uncomfy the first few days |
You get used to braces, they're only sore getting them on mostly. Never had the plates. Argee about the putty stuff, that's probably worse than either of them, lol!
|
I have braces now and i think they are ok lol. I used to be like omg nooo but I kinda actually like them now. However I feel like an idiot when I smile. I smile stupidly anyway so its worse with braces.
|
I noticed my retainer more, with braces after a few days you wouldn't even notice they're there. They're while hard to keep clean but, like when I had fruit or bread bits would get stuck, it's rotten. :yuk:
I like gthem though, wern't too bad. |
Eat soft foods and not hard foods and you will be fine
|
Oh yeh. After like a few months. (it goes by so quikly honest!!) its easier to eat hard food. I always drink fizzy drinks and sweets and nothing ever happens to me!!
