A reason for BB\'s decay.....
 

The main factor that is causing the destruction of Big Brother is consumerism.


For the past few years it has often been the case, that the main story lines are based around love/couples, and normally of the beautiful people kind. These 'love' stories are then featured in Heat and other similiar magazines, thus giving Big Brother essentially free advertisement and causes more interest. This leads on to the possibility of more viewers and as such more companies willing to pay for advertising on Big Brother.

This then leads the producers to want to have love romances in the house as Heat take interest (of course they only take interest because of magazine sales), so to increase the chances of this we have the 'beautiful' housemates that are picked for attractiveness and little else, in the hope that a romance does blossom.

Because of the way BB has pandered to these housemates in the past (Nikki's re-entering, Nicole even being allowed into the house!) they are left with more of these shallow types applying in ever increasing numbers, who also know what they have to do to be noticed. You can easily argue that Noirins love triangle is a of a fabrication that magazines would love and that she could be setting it up in the house to then deny it all in magazines about how she doesn't love Marcus or Sree, but here's me posing and looking nice....

I know all housemates are celeb-wannabies (on some level or other) but the ones that seem to expect a bit of fame for just being there has grown. The reason it has grown is they know that magazines will pay for photos and interviews.

However, seeing as how most of the population (or at least BB watching viewers) aren't like that it has slowly started to kill the viewing figures on a year to year basis. Watching the same beautiful love interests whilst the odd-ball characters get picked off is slowly becoming tiresome and people are turning away.

The same groups form each years, with the members that are the 'attractive' with 'fashionable clothing' becoming a key group that look down (just like at school) on those that differ from them.

Luckily they haven't had much overall success with winning, but that doesn't mean they haven't done that well outside the house afterwards.

Any thoughts, I tried to keep it brief, but have plenty to say on this matter...

I think this year they won't make nowhere near the money other housemates in the past have

I agree that this year the housemates won't make as much as in previous years, maybe the credit crunch will do some good after all.

The fact that they will talk it up even if we don't care will happen, but with less people watching this year, they might talk about it less, if they keep with the same love stories that normally don't pan out, then some of us will just get turned off even more and next years figures could risk being even lower.

Oh and good morning BTW. Can you see my left-wing agenda coming through, lol.

I think the decay of bigbrother is because they are running out of good ideas.

I like having debates with people on forums, so I try and do proper posts every now and then. Not that I don't enjoy the shorter sentances threads but I can grow tired of the sheer amount of them that are the same as each other.

Do you think that could be because they are trying to pander to the wrong audience.

Why else would people like Kris make it into the house?

Do you think they aren't trying or that they are trying but just doing it badly for the wrong people?

On a serious note, (must I ,oh well I've started now... I'll finish!) People keep saying they need new ideas and twists to keep the viewers, or indeed attract more viewers
But 'Junky' as usual raises a good point, Bb needs to try and select more interesting h/mates that wish to entertain rather than just trying to grab their 15 mins of fame!
However, that wont happen and the program, a brilliant idea, will die out alas!

its because weve seen it all before, weve seen the same thing for 10 years, the tasks may be different but the same people are comming through, the bitchies, the geeks, the comedians ectectect and it gets broing after a while. Its not that big brother is running out of ideas its that we have seen all the character trates before, we see it in our day to day lives aswell and we are getting bored of it

They have idea's, but the wrong ones for the audience they have that are watching at home.

I didn't watch BB until BB6 (saw bits of 5), and as far as I can remember the fame hungry weren't about until a few BB's in, when suddenly fame beckoned (with both Craig and Brian, actually getting work from BB) and this trend just seems to have gotten worse.

Would I be right in assuming that people who saw BB1-5?

Alas, I only came to the show from Bb7, but the h/mates are far more aware of what could happen when they leave, the prize money is good, but Steph, 1st out last year, is still in the tabloids and no doubt doing very well!
But even if the prize money was only 10,000 I think you'd still have 1,000's apply to enter the BB house!

True, but we still watch because we like it (some do - I like watching people) but when you have four or five very similiar housemates at the start in an attempt to be a love story for the viewers it just means you get 1/3 of the house that are essentially the same person.

Each member of the house should be different from the next.

Very true, but you could still choose a good mixture of housemates that weren't just in it for a photoshoot at the end......sex may sell, but I'm not buying.
