Racisim

Is it Rascist to call someone "Black", for example, if you were at a party, and forgotton someones name, would it be acceptable to say, "What do you call him, no no, not him, the black man?"

What do you think?

Mrluvaluva 22-07-2009 07:03 PM

Are we presuming there is only one "black man" at this party?

Twilight 22-07-2009 07:04 PM

I don't really think its Rascist to call someone "black"

I meant as in you were pointing in the general direction of a black man, then the person you were talking to thought you were asking the name of the white man (say they were both talking)

bronaaaa 22-07-2009 07:06 PM

I think it depends on the way you say it, same with calling white people white.

Would you refer to someone as "white"?

Ninastar 22-07-2009 07:09 PM

I hate it when people tell you off for saying something like the black guy? we were told in school once that you should describe them by what they are wearing and not thier colour? which makes noe sence cause we all wear the same thing?

How would you distinguish someone from a group of white people?

Enid 22-07-2009 07:11 PM

Surely you'd just be describing the guy whose name you had forgotten?

It's stupid when people tip toe around issues like this. Would it be better to say "that guy whose skin is of a darker tone" or "the guy that isn't white"?

It isn't racist to call someone black, because that is what they are, no?

Yeah i call people white i call myself white to, because it is what i am.
saying the one with lighter skin or the one with darker skin sounds silly.

depends on the situation. I'd only call them a black person anyway if that was a distinguishing feature, just like a blond haired person in a group of people with brown hair, a woman with a load of men or a shorter person amongst taller people.

Mrluvaluva 22-07-2009 07:26 PM

I might say "the blonde woman" or the "short guy" or "the guy in the white jacket". I suppose everyone is different.

Ninastar 22-07-2009 07:27 PM

what if they all had the same hair they were all the same size and they were all wearing the same outfit? :P

That would be highly unlikely. Same would go for black or white though don't you think? I mean, if they all had the same hair they were all the same size and they were all wearing the same outfit and they were all black or white, then what would you do?

Ninastar 22-07-2009 07:32 PM

I would run up to him and point.

Lol i dont actually know/

Ninastar 22-07-2009 07:33 PM

No.

Fom 22-07-2009 07:46 PM

I would just say 'Black' person... black people are not offended or embarrassed at the fact they are black, and will not be offended if you call them black. Therefore just call them black, I am sure they have noticed and got used to the fact their skin colour is of a certain colour.

Exactly. People these days are so scared of offending others, they are now worried about whether describing someone as "black" is the political correct term to use.

Has anyone seen the episode of Extras where Maggie dates a black guy, but in the end drives him away because she's so scared of saying anything that could be portrayed as racist? This reminds me of that.

would you not say a white man in a group of black men or vice versa?

Fom 22-07-2009 08:02 PM

I find it more racist when people say 'Coloured'

Personally no, but then I am not criticising anyone for doing so.

x_eztiger_x 22-07-2009 08:24 PM

i wouldnt say its raciest

Fangz 22-07-2009 10:28 PM

There's a world of difference between "the black man standing over there" and "you black bastard".

Mrluvaluva 23-07-2009 02:06 PM

Just a bit....

Jayson 23-07-2009 02:19 PM

Never fear a black guy is here

I wouldn't care if someone identified me as being "the black person", nor would any of my friends that are black.

I get more offended when I get called African, just because I have the same color skin as most Africans, doesn't mean I am one. It's a bit like calling an English caucasian Polish.

Coloured and N*gger are the worst.

NettoSuperstar! 23-07-2009 02:21 PM

"West Indian" I still hear that one occasionally! All depends on context OP, the context you describe aint racist no

BBUK4LYFE 23-07-2009 05:04 PM

Under that circumstance, I wouldn't say that its racist.

PaulyJ 28-07-2009 11:59 AM

Things are changing year by year when i was growing up in the 70s i was never described as Black, it was deemed offensive, almost as if being Black was offensive, Coloured was used instead. More and more though people are accepting Black as purely a descriptive term and when i hear a White person say "the Black guy over their" it makes me think back at how it use to be and makes me a tad bit proud to be English.

that's the same with my BF we were at a party (it was quiet rough) he can't called an "African Monkey" because he got served before this t wat

he didn't mind the monkey part he thought that was quiet funny but being called African really offended him

another time i got told of by some random woman for describing my BF has half cast and was told "it's bi-racial or mixed race" to which i said "i'll call my bf what i like"
