Books - Favourites and What are you currently reading? [merged]

Just wondering - as I love reading and buy books like they're going out of fashion - what everybody's favourite books are?

My favourite three are probably (1) To Kill A Mockingbird - by Harper Lee (2) Lorelei's Secret - by Carolyn Parkhurst, and (3) American Psycho - by Bret Easton Ellis.

Hass got me into Dave Courtney his books are good aswell! I read To Kill A Mocking Bird for GCSE and thought it was quite good but not one of my favourites lol :spin2:

BigSister 19-07-2005 02:45 PM

I ,like Harry Potter and any chick flick book. I also like 1984 as well read it for my A level english coursework also like Jane Austen as well

1_In_A_Million 19-07-2005 02:47 PM

my friend has read 1984 i think is it

Slartibartfast 19-07-2005 02:48 PM

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy!!

Greatest trilogy (in 5 parts!) ever written anywhere! It will change the way you view and think about the whole world.

Dan Brown's books are pretty good, if a little one dimensional.

LOTR is brilliant, as is a similar series by Terry Brooks, the Shannara Series.

1_In_A_Million 19-07-2005 02:49 PM

i hate lord of the rings is soo long and boring

1_In_A_Million 19-07-2005 02:49 PM

i hate the films too!

Slartibartfast 19-07-2005 02:50 PM

I loved the fact the LOTR books are soooo long (and not boring!!). You can get lost in that whole world for days on end, brilliant stuff.

1_In_A_Million 19-07-2005 02:53 PM

i don't like really long books i get bored easilly of they're to long! and then i never bother to read the rest of them so i don't get to know what happens

Sunny_01 19-07-2005 03:52 PM

My favourite books are a series called the Shanarra series by Terry Brooks they are very good - down the lines of maybe lord of the rings but a lot lighter and more fun to read.

I also like Terry Pratchets Good Omens - that is the funniest book I have read for a long time

Generally though I read anything - have just read all the new Dan Brown books and enjoyed them :colour:

BusyBee 19-07-2005 05:00 PM

I like any book that grabs my attention within the first two pages.

I love some of the classics - Jane Austen, To Kill a Mockingbird, Wuthering Heights etc., but I also love things like Bridget Jones Diary and of course Harry Potter.

Though I never managed to get through the Lord of the Rings books - found them really heavy going.

~Kizwiz~ 19-07-2005 05:54 PM

I like any sort of book but love To Kill a Mockingbird and any Ian Rankin books.

But my fav books are Phillip Pulman his dark materials trilogy! half way between harry potter and lord of the rings! OMG they're amazing and I' m on the final one of the trilogy and cant put it down but at the same time i want to savour it as i know it will end soon!!!

Brook's Shannara series is great, Sunny. I love em. The first three books especially were really good reads.

Totally agree - wow I have never known anyone else that has heard of them and when I try to describe them to people they give me that "hmmm elves kind of look"

Slartibartfast 20-07-2005 09:14 AM

LOL, "hmmm elves kind of look" is one I'm familiar with! Most of the books I read are that kind of stuff, LOTR, the Dragonlance series, Shannara etc, etc.

I'd highly recommend the series by Terry Goodkind as well, Wizards First Rule is the first in the series. Great books along the same lines as the above.

Good to see someone is into the same kind of stuff I read, as you say most people hear elves and goblins and turn their noses up at it!

ThaGazBoi 20-07-2005 10:07 AM

Comedies i love comedy books

Fangz 20-07-2005 12:21 PM

I've got too many books to count, and could never choose a favourite.
BTW, have any other Harry Potter fans found that book six isn't as good as book five, or is it just me?

ThaGazBoi 20-07-2005 12:22 PM

Its okay, I think its better then book 5 but JUST

Fangz 20-07-2005 12:37 PM

I prefer book five, the Umbridge thing had me in stitches. It had just the right balance of humour and drama.

BigSister 20-07-2005 12:51 PM

I think its better than book 5 because i wsnt too keen on the dark thing like I wasnt that keen on book 2 either

Siouxsie 29-07-2005 11:47 AM

What book are you reading at the moment ?
Im reading Bruce Lee life story I love biographies

Slartibartfast 29-07-2005 11:49 AM

I'm reading (for the second time) Wizards First Rule by Terry Goodkind, kind of Lord of Rings territory but more grown up and thankfully a little shorter!!

Everyone reading this thread should go out and read Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the greatest trilogy (in 5 parts) ever written.

Siouxsie 29-07-2005 11:51 AM

I'm reading Hide and Seek by Ian Rankin. It's the second book about the detective Rebus. Don't read them if you want an early night - if you're like me, you won't be able to put it down!

Ruth 29-07-2005 01:17 PM

I've read Hitchhikers - love the book and the tv show. Haven't seen the film yet though.

Fangz 29-07-2005 01:18 PM
