Big Brother to be axed by C4 (after BB11) [The Sun - threads merged]

BIG Brother is to be scrapped by Channel 4 after this year's ratings disaster, The Sun can reveal.

The axe comes as barely two million tune into the tenth series of the reality show - compared to eight million only a few years ago.

A telly insider last night confirmed an official announcement will be made as early as Friday, saying: "The reality is people are BORED with it. Even at Channel 4 the vibe among staff is that if you like Big Brother you're not cool.

Dull ... Marcus in current show

"If the people commissioning the show don't think it's cool, what hope is there?"

The "bold experiment" that was launched in 2000 went on to make stars of housemates such as Jade Goody, Chantelle Houghton and the original Mr "Nasty" Nick Bateman.

But this year's dull crop - including mutton-chopped Wolverine lookalike Marcus - have proved the death knell.

One final series - the 11th - will be screened on C4 next year because of the channel's £180million deal with the show's makers Endemol.

But after that it will only go ahead if the production house can flog it to a rival channel.

At its peak Big Brother was a huge money-spinner - generating profits of £70million a year.

But insiders now say it is only just "washing its face" - industry speak for covering its costs.

They accuse the show of failing to win over the "Facebook generation" after being watered down to avoid controversy following the Shilpa Shetty race row on the celebrity version.

The source said: "The truth is nobody's talking about Big Brother any more."

Fans of Celebrity Big Brother are likely to still get their fix of it in January - since that is also part of C4's current deal.

good. i wanted BB to end after BB11.

Furbylol 25-08-2009 11:36 PM

If anyone's its the producers faults, were are all the great twists? tbh block voting killed it off very early on..

Rob! 25-08-2009 11:36 PM

Oh.......balls.

dudeMAN 25-08-2009 11:38 PM

Is this for real?

This is so sh*t.

Scarlett. 25-08-2009 11:38 PM

BB should have eneded a few seires' ago, now its gonna be remembered as being the last of the boring reality shows

merv 25-08-2009 11:38 PM

Now I am Not sure if the post is a genuine report.
But I do agree it is watered down, I doubt any of the current housemates would have walked in the same shoes as past housemates for behaviour or entertainment value.
But, BB would be unwise to axe it, a cable channel with less constraints behaviour wise would snap it up and we'd be back to the glory days.

King Gizzard 25-08-2009 11:39 PM

good.

Jayson 25-08-2009 11:39 PM

So BB10 is the last series?

luminoussun 25-08-2009 11:41 PM

I hope channel 5 take it on and go back to its roots and put real people and not wannabe idiots in the house

ILoveTRW 25-08-2009 11:41 PM

The Sun's stories are usually right :bawling:

The only thing is theyve ended on a **** series. They should just pull out all the stops for a final series - live feed, total BBLB rebranding, etc.

End the show on a high.

Tom4784 25-08-2009 11:43 PM

A few years ago i'd have been bothered but now I'm pretty apathetic when it comes to BB.

flemin 25-08-2009 11:44 PM

Eight million a few years ago? For the launch and final maybe but no highlights show has ever got anywhere near that figure.

"Reality TV is dying a slow death, Talent shows are the new big thing "

To be Picky, Talent shows are reality TV, when you take people out of there normal lifestyles.
Some of the biggest show are reality or feature the public.
Come dine with me, Coach Trip,Castaway, I'm a celebrity etc Peter and Katie etc. and most occupy the media pages.

already been posted.

Tom4784 25-08-2009 11:47 PM

It's been posted, The Sun isn't the most reliable source but anyone could have told you this from the start of BB10. It's been obvious that'd end sooner rather then later.

I expected that anyway, lol.

Furbylol 25-08-2009 11:48 PM

Lol, they called Marcus Dull.
The irony.

Sir_Diary_of_Roomus 25-08-2009 11:48 PM

If no rival channel is interested in buying the rights, then I wouldn't rule out a new contract for new series' to go on E4. Didn't Celeb Hijack attract more viewers to E4 than anything else before? They'd probably be a lot shorter though.

BBfan46 25-08-2009 11:48 PM

I posted the second half actually aka the full version unlike the other post.

MissKittyFantastico 25-08-2009 11:49 PM

I'd rather it finished this year tbh.

If the effort, or rather lack of it, that's gone into BB10 is anything to go by, then next year will be even worse.

Would rather they sold it off now and let someone else have a better go with it. After a break of a year or two.

Reality TV is all about wannbe's. That is what the show is about now. It's not an experiment anymore. Most of them just sleep all day and how do you expect people to stay interested in something for 90+ days? It's a joke.

No one should be in that enviroment for 90+ days, the mind games don't help in that sort of house with people you really don't know that well like you would do in the outside world.

TurtleSoup 25-08-2009 11:51 PM

It's quite funny they reference Marcus when he's one of the most watchable housemates.

Actually all he does is sit under a quilt and wank. Not exactly exciting.

Rob! 25-08-2009 11:54 PM

This is ****....
Whoever made the decision to cut LF, Diary Room Uncut, BB on the couch....Damn their hides to Hades.:mad::mad::mad:

keithafc 25-08-2009 11:54 PM

Marcus is BB 10

Sir_Diary_of_Roomus 25-08-2009 11:56 PM

It has been confirmed to be scrapped since BB8. Still hasn't happened. They'll see the contract through, what happens after is the mystery.

Jords 25-08-2009 11:56 PM

Im not surprised, the producers are not making it interesting anymore.

Scarlett. 25-08-2009 11:57 PM

I bet C4 are kicking themselves for signing upto BB11

Benjamin 25-08-2009 11:59 PM

To be fair, BB has run it's course. Every great show has to end at some point. maybe in 20 years BB can make a massive revival for another 10 years.

It is a shame, but they are right, it is not as widely talked about as it used to be and has become more of a 'cult' following rather than a popular and exciting show.

It's has done well though, and will remain the 'Daddy' of all reality shows for some time.

Jords 26-08-2009 12:04 AM

Thats what they should do, have next year the last, then have a 2-3 year break, then bring it back wit loads of twists in mind, and good tasks, and make it the best yet that it attracts 10 million viewers, itspossibly if they try.

Exactly.
BB10 has had a general feeling of meh from the producers - even the house wasn't that different from last years (The diary room is in EXACTLY the same place with stairs on either side.) A break and then a huge comeback would save it.

Shaun 26-08-2009 12:07 AM

Good. It's ****.
