Channel4 may have too change there minds now

Why!? PRODUCT PLACEMENT, thats why.
For the first time permission as been given for Television company's to show/advertise products on British Television shows.
For years aired programs have not been allowed to, BB always puts stickers over the products, Tee Shirts slogan, Soaps show products with labels facing away from Camera.
Under new rules, if advertisers pay for the product to be shown they can now do it.
And it's worth Millions to them.
BB as the potential to be in the Big Earners making it very viable to keep it going.
Watch this space.

Niamh. 14-09-2009 11:22 AM

Really?? hhmm, If they do keep it, I hope they get some new staff in cos their ideas were shite this year

ricky2k9 14-09-2009 11:22 AM

Thats true actually, all the housemates shopping can be aired.

karezza 14-09-2009 11:22 AM

The entire Tesco shopping list could be advertised. So much air time.

merv 14-09-2009 11:28 AM

It would also mean that named items that housemates wear could be funded by companys.

Niamh. 14-09-2009 11:28 AM

It would be like the Trueman show with HMs being told to show alot of certain products etc!!! Imagine Freddie getting into the mmmmmmmm................aaahhhhhh........mmmmmmmm. ..........Radox

Not really. Considering how many US shows are watched here with high ratings, I don't see how anyone is adversely affected. So instead of seeing a can with a COLA sticker on it, we see a can of coke. Or rather than seeing a jacket or hat with tape across it, you will be able to see the Nike swoosh or whatever.

What does ratings have to do with it?

I can understand why it wouldn't be such a bad thing regarding TV shows that sensibly place products in, and yeah, its normallly clothing/drinks/food brands. Yet, I can't see how some programs wouldn't then start needing this to finance themselves (as BB is mentioned), but then when does it mean that instead of a cutaway to the garden with birds singing, it doesn't cut to a can of coke.

Do you think there is a difference between subliminal messaging and product placement.

Will the BBC be allowed to do it? What happens about the TV licence if so?

Big companies that have the money and the power can drive smaller business out with product placement as it does have an effect, is that such a good thing (especially in this country where most of the big companies aren't even domestically owned anymore) and we buy more American products and Japanese products that have the financial backing rather than the small independent ones.

Big business operate in a greedy way, why should we allow them another avenue to strangle the market place by over dominance?

vladicus 14-09-2009 02:15 PM

its a good way for bb to make money as people like to skip ads

[rquote=2569707&tid=147617&author=vladicus]its a good way for bb to make money as people like to skip ads[/rquote]

Yeah, but the TV companies know that people do this (as do the ad companies) wouldn't that just encourage them to blitz the programs with PP?

The American TV shows have more ad breaks to keep you watching, could this happen here as well. They don't have ad breaks between programs as thats when you might change station, but they do have more during the shows, is this the way we want British TV to go?

Shasown 14-09-2009 02:47 PM

Its not definate yet, its expected to be announced over the next week. Even if the ban is lifted for ITV etc, it will remain in place for the BBC, so no licence fee reductions - Ba****ds

It will be interesting to see how they deal with it in BB, will they allow all products to be displayed and give prominence to any that pay for placement, or do they blank out only those that havent paid? Booze would still have to be covered though especially if the medical profession force though the blanket ban on alcohol advertising.

MiuMiu 14-09-2009 06:03 PM

Channel 4 aren't going to change their minds.
They made such a big del about BB ending this year. Every one of the main entertainment news outlets, from papers, to magzines, tv shows and beyond, publicised the fact that it was ending.
If they went back on their word and commissioned more BB for money they would look like fools.

BB is ending next year.
And that's it.

Well seeing as how people think that this will save BB and is a good thing as such, I think it's only right that I can say why I think product placement on our screens is a bad thing - BB or not, it was not I that started the thread but I will point out a bit about it if I feel there is a point to be made by myself.

This current global recession that we are in is caused by several factors, I know of at least two business that have gone under in recent weeks (through friends and family) yet companies with stronger finances (Sainsburys, would be an example for a fact) are increasing their profits. I haven't been hit at all by this credit crunch - and you want to know the very basic reason why?

My house isn't full of pointless things that my TV/Mag/Radio told me to buy.

My clothes are clothes not labels.

My lifestyle is within my means.

I didnt run up huge credit bill by buying things that I was influenced (and yes TV does influence us, *simples*) into buying. The credit crunch has come about because people have spent too much on things they don't need, why? because if they don't have these things then there lives aren't complete.

Advertising - is it good or bad? When a company like Coke spends more on Advertising a year than some of the poorer countries GDP!

Sorry if this is a rant - but I love BB, but to save it at this cost, I'd rather die. (and sadly I think that sooner rather than later that will be it - this world can sicken me to a point before I will need to kill myself and be buried in a £1,400 box with a service that costs another £3/5000 just to burn me and eff me off.

No, businesses are great, long may they rape the planet of everything it has - including our souls.

(oh, some sauteed pots and some cauliflower - again, nice with mint sauce)
