McElderry: 'Rage track is dreadful'

Joe McElderry has criticised Rage Against The Machine's track 'Killing In The Name'.

The X Factor winner, whose debut single 'The Climb' was released earlier this week, is currently involved in a chart battle for the Christmas number one after a Facebook group started a campaign for the rock band to reach the top spot.

After hearing the song for the first time, McElderry told The Sun: "They can't be serious! I had no idea what it sounded like. It's dreadful and I hate it. How can anyone enjoy this? Can you imagine the grandmas (sic) hearing this over Christmas lunch?"

McElderry added that he wouldn't buy the single and continued: "It's a nought out of ten from me. Simon Cowell wouldn't like it. They wouldn't get through to boot camp on The X Factor - they're just shouting."

However, the 18-year-old also claimed that he wasn't upset by the campaign.

"I think people are jumping on this to have a go at Simon and The X Factor rather than me," he said. "But Simon gives people a shot.

"I will be really disappointed if ['The Climb'] doesn't get to number one after all the effort I've put in to this and winning the show."

I agree with him really, just sounds like shouting to me an is a load of crap. But don't like his song either, so... don't really care who gets #1.

Enid 19-12-2009 02:34 PM

Bad move Joe. Baaaaad bad move.

Stacey. 19-12-2009 02:35 PM

not a good thing to say :/

Chels 19-12-2009 02:37 PM

Umg he shudda kept his mouth shut there.

King Gizzard 19-12-2009 02:37 PM

I think he has just given RATM more sales

lily. 19-12-2009 02:38 PM

He speaks the truth. It's far from RATMs best work to be fair.

Enid 19-12-2009 02:39 PM

He is slating a classic rock song and has just come across as an ignorant little boy. Adding fuel to the fire. Carry on Joe. :D

King Gizzard 19-12-2009 02:40 PM

And say it again

Its not about the song its about the lyrics!

Stephanie 19-12-2009 02:40 PM

more sales for ratm

Jack_ 19-12-2009 02:42 PM

He's right though, but still a bad thing to say.

Stu 19-12-2009 02:43 PM

Joe just demonstrated the biggest downfall of the X-Factor. It's just singing. Having a good singing voice is not the be all and end all. What matters is character. If RATM is just shouting, can we assume rap and hip hop is just talking?

Enid 19-12-2009 02:43 PM

Well sometimes honesty is not the best policy.

Yes, and bearing in mind they are also musicians.

lily. 19-12-2009 02:45 PM

The main difference between us and Joe is that we can voice our opinions without any backlash. He should have PR people making sure he doesn't do that. He is famous now, and can no longer voice opinions without some kind of repercussions. That's just how it is. He will have to take the good with the bad I'm afraid.

Enid 19-12-2009 02:47 PM

I'd say it is also stupidity on his part. Slating a rival with many supporters is not tactful at all, lol.

_Seth 19-12-2009 02:51 PM

Why the hell should he hide his opinion? I agree with him, when I first heard it I thought I had the wrong song or something.

If people like RATM, it will be Christmas #1 and should just think "meh, fair enough if he doesn't like it" and get on with their lives.

Tom 19-12-2009 02:55 PM

He's right.

Because it's not good for his reputation or image.

If he had said "bring it on, may the best man win", it would of been a lot more respectable. Openly slating a band/song like that is enough to tarnish a reputation and as he's only just been thrown out into the limelight, saying all the right things is VERY important.

Stacey. 19-12-2009 02:59 PM

i have to agree with him here,, but just SO the wrong thing to say!! :/
Jooeeeee!!!!!

I know but it's not fair that since now he's famouse he must censore his opinions. He's gonna get more hate from saying that because he's famous, while if a random BB contestant for example said that, no-one would give a toss. =/

Well generally those on his side agree with him and those who are on Rage's side hate him for no particular reason other than winning X Factor, so its not as though he's irritating anyone new.

Those of us indifferent and find the whole thing pathetic and hypocritical don't really care either way.

I know. This is what happens when you're famous. He needs to learn that.

Do you not agree though that he sounds very ignorant in what he said about RATM?

WOMBAI 19-12-2009 03:09 PM

The Sun again- don't believe a word of it! Dare say they have at best twisted his words - at worst completely made it up!

M X 19-12-2009 03:09 PM

Oh god. Bad move on Joe's part.

No, everyone needs to learn to respect opinions.

It's ridiculous that because he's from X Factor he's hated. It's like WTF so what, he can sing ****ing beautifully so that's what matters.

No because he's right. And thats coming from someone who can't stand Joe.

MarkWaldorf 19-12-2009 03:11 PM

I personally don't believe Joe said this :/ It doesn't seem like the sort of attitude he'd have. All week he's been wishing RATM good luck and describing it as normal chart competition.

Then whoever made up this garbage could lose him his position.

Well not really because the charts are done on a Saturday so pretty much 99% of sales will now be done.

MarkWaldorf 19-12-2009 03:15 PM

There's a video on The Sun website of Joe hearing it and the only thing he says is 'I can't imagine people listening to this on Christmas day.' I don't know where they got the rest from.

Tom 19-12-2009 03:16 PM

And the protest will probably be over now so Rage will most likely plummet out of the charts next week and Joe will get last number 1 of 2009. Its not as though its a good song like Hallelujah last year

Well for a start, he admitted he had not heard the song before, and I'm guessing the bad as well. He mentioned how they are just shouting when they are a rap/rock band. There are many different vocal styles and he should know this as he has just won a sodding singing competition!

mizzy25 19-12-2009 03:17 PM

i dont believe for one minute joe wud have said those things

The Sun always take things out of context and twist what people say - they are famous for it! They are a shite paper selling shite stories - to people who hear what they want to hear!

Enid 19-12-2009 03:22 PM

Ah, if you're going to nitpick and selectively read my posts, I'm done here.

lily. 19-12-2009 03:22 PM

At least they read yours Enid. LoL

Mine appear to be in invisible ink on some threads here.
