Tommy Cooper, Woody Allen, Bill Hicks, Eddie Izzard, Richard Pryor and Joan Rivers HAVE to be chosen.

Also picked Bill Bailey, Alexei Sayle, Ricky Gervais and Roseanne Barr.

How can anybody in their right mind lump great comedians such as Alexei Sayle, Andy Kaufman, Paul Merton, Dylan Moran, Jerry Seinfeld, Lenny Bruce and Woody Allen with talentless nobodies like Andrew Dice Clay, Bernard Manning, Joe Pasquale, Jim Davidson, Jimmy Carr and Roy Chubby Brown?

These "list" shows do my head in.

Crimson Dynamo 20-01-2010 08:14 AM

Someone's been to the Twilight Finishing Academy.

****.

Don't they always air this or are they doing a redo?

Stewart Lee must be the most overrated thing in the entire universe. I just don't get his style of ripping on completely obvious things like hoodies and Russell Brand and drawing it out with repetition over twenty minuets in a really pedantic manner to appeal to these 'higher minds' who like 'proper comedy'.

Tommy Tiernan FTW

Shaun 20-01-2010 01:06 PM

Thank GOD someone else dislikes Stewart Lee...to an extent. I understand the comedy profession must be frustrating when shows like Little Britain, Catherine Tate and My Family are continually recommissioned in primetime slots [even Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps manages to get series after series...Jesus wept] - and therefore I welcome dissing of them by other rival comedians/shows, but Lee's just a complete hypocrite. He moans about **** like this, and then centres his show on moaning about the popular. Moaning about the 'popular' is just as popular as the 'popular', if you bear with me. Shows like Mock the Week, Peep Show, The Office...they've all done it before; mocked the people.

I find his style sometimes funny - he makes some good observations. But his arrogance is so unappealing; he's not a genius, but he'd like to think he is, however much he hides behind the 'don't care' veil.

Makes a welcome change to the tired observational comedy or one-liner formula that we're normally treated to. I don't think it has anything to do with elitism. It's simply carrying on in the surreal comedy tradition of Peter Cook, Spike Milligan and Python and applying it to stand-up. Admittedly some of Stewart Lee's fans can be real social cliches, but that's always going to happen in the case that a performer or entertainer's lack of mainstream success runs counter to the quality of their material.

setanta 20-01-2010 01:43 PM

I actually quite like Stewart Lee. He's witty, has a great turn of phrase and a willingness to really push the boundaries of what is acceptable. Remember his stand up where he had digs at the Scots while performing in Edinburgh or Glasgow? Now that's ballsy. But yeah, I can understand why he wouldn't be a favourite with many.

Oh, and Richard Pryor should win this hands down. Just wanted to mention that genius again!

Crimson Dynamo 20-01-2010 02:08 PM

I once went to see a stand up show with the pop group James

the whole thing did not work out so well

They only had themselves to blame when their only response to hecklers was to start singing Sit Down.
