Shall I go to see Avatar 3d?

I love sci fi and think i would like this film. Mrs LT does not like Sci Fi and thinks she will not like it. We have the window to go this Friday. I am also worried that having consumed around 3/4 of a bottle of wine prior to attending + a few beers (at pizz pizza pizaa) I could fall asleep as it in rather long.

Do you think it is a good call to go and risk falling asleep and the wrath of Mrs LT for it not being up her strada or should I hedge my bets and go and see the George Clooney blandfest?

or another film?:conf:

My hubby took the kids to see it on Saturday and he loved it, thought it was one of the best films he's ever seen. I'm going to go tomorrow night so I'll give you a review on Wednesday!!

If you fancy watching the most mind numbingly boring film, with ridiculous characters and plot, then go and see it.

Maybe, like many others, the prospect of seeing 3D will excite you....

But that alone is not enough for me...

Callum 08-02-2010 04:11 PM

You haven't seen it yet?

setanta 08-02-2010 05:10 PM

I'm not a huge fan of the film really but you still have to see it on the big screen for the sheer spectacle. Amazing to look at.

MeMyselfAndI 08-02-2010 05:22 PM

YAH! It's really good.

Niamh. 10-02-2010 09:14 AM

Went to see it last night LT. It was a pretty long film but I didn't look at my watch once and I never wanted it to end! I'd never seen a 3D film in the cinema before and that alone was a fantastic experience! I've heard people say that the visuals are brilliant but the story wasn't great, I'd have to disagree with that, yes the visuals are brilliant but for me It was the story I loved the most. I would highly recommend it, best film I've seen in a very long time!

hurray

I know it will be so. I just need to sell it to Mrs LT now.

Niamh. 10-02-2010 10:25 AM

Well I went with my mom and neither of us like Sci-fi but both of us loved it so I reckon Mrs. LT will love it too!

setanta 10-02-2010 10:39 AM

Leave your brain at home LT and you'll enjoy it immensely. Fantastic to look at.

I disagree so much with you! The story reminded me of a book I read a few years ago that I loved, The Celestine Prophecy, I found it very spiritual

Yes, that's the whole idea behind the manipulative storyline that incorporates elements of many older works of fiction but dumbs it down entirely to appeal to as many people as possible. There's no subtlety involved here - it's a blockbuster designed to make as much money as possible. I mean, I knew what was going to happen after the first few mins.... no balls.

Manipulative Storyline? what the hell does that mean??? I went to see it, I loved every minute of it, I took away something nice from it, how is that bad James?????

It was the dumbest film I've seen in a long time. Visually spectacular but that's it. Somebody else will come along and utilise this new technology in a daring, wholly original manner that will highlight the true weaknesses of this film. Wait until somebody like Del Toro or Christopher Nolan get a hold of this form of movie making - then we'll have some real magic.

The message was- I'll rape the culture of many indigenous tribes of earth and mix it all up and put them in giant smurfs outfits, immersing them in some far off mystical land. Then I'll have a by-the-numbers plot that any 8 year old could come up with but that doesn't matter because, hey, they're the good guys and I have a really bad bad guy who wants to kill them - nobody will care about the idiotic plot cuz I'll be dazzling them with effects.

You see that's why I call Avatar manipulative. The whole idea behind District 9 was that the alien beings were unnattractive and "alien", not Blue tribal people that we immediately empathize with because of our own checkered history in relation to dealing with them on Earth. That's daring on the part of District 9 because it forces the viewer to think and reflect on how you see the world and those in it, whereas Avatar is just childish, exploitative filmmaking, designed to make as much money as possible.

But it seems to me, and this isn't meant in an insulting way, that you'd already decided that you wouldn't like it before you saw it because everyone else did and it had a big budget! Like I said I loved it and came away thinking about things alot and I find it insulting that you are basically saying that me and all the other people that liked it are basically stupid and easily manipulated.

Crimson Dynamo 10-02-2010 11:15 AM

i just like a film with baddies goodies romance and a happy ending

anything else and i start to think I missed some hidden meaning

I like the whole energy idea, I believe there's alot of truth in it and the film made me want to read a bit more about it, that can only be a good thing imo.
