Channel 4 has ended its deal with Warner Bros for the rights to air US comedy Friends.

The broadcaster has shown the series, which starred Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Courtney Cox and Matt Le Blanc, for 15 years. The station's contract with Warners ends in 2011.

Comedy Central has picked up the rights to the NBC series, according to Broadcast.

Friends ran for ten series between 1994 and 2004, with the final episode drawing 8.6 million viewers in the UK. It has remained a daily staple on both Channel 4 and E4, with average viewing figures of around 400,000.

Head of Channel 4 acquisitions Gill Hay said: "After 15 years, ten hit series and 236 terrific episodes it's time to say goodbye to old Friends and welcome new ones, in the form of more comedy, drama and entertainment from the US and UK.

"We are incredibly proud to have been the home of Friends for so long, but at a point when the channel is undergoing a period of creative renewal it felt like the right time to part company."

Friends is the latest big show to finish airing on Channel 4, following the axing of Big Brother, Wife Swap and How Clean Is Your House?. The station has claimed that the decisions will allow them to "refresh the schedule".

Jack_ 10-02-2010 03:02 PM

Heard this on Radio 1 just a while ago, was very shocked. It's like it's home, and you know it's there if you ever want it, just like Big Brother and C4.

Scarlett. 10-02-2010 03:28 PM

Yes it made E4 a Dead Ch,
the same way the Bloated BBC3 show endless Dr.Who repeats.

No way to have a Channel.

M X 10-02-2010 03:55 PM

no no no no no no no no i watch it every day!!!! fuuuuuuuuuck :(

Raph 10-02-2010 03:55 PM

noo =(
friends and big brother are by far the best show of the channel! =(

Patrick 10-02-2010 03:58 PM

Lol Mark and TheBeast, I was just about to post that too when I read the full artical :(
Oh well, on the bright side C4 is going to fail big time now.

Look at all the shows that are and will leave soon, Paul O Grady, Ugly Betty, How clean is your house, Big Brother and now Friends.

BB and Friends have been really big on those Channels, if C4 really think there new **** shows that will replace BB/Friends etc will actually be popular, then there very stupid.

No one will care, once BB is gone, Once Friends is gone.. No one has a need to watch C4 or E4, and there for no one will see adverts for their new retarded shows like Notting Hill.

Thats why I cant wait for BB12 to be on another channel and get fantastic ratings while C4 are so unpopular with the audience now.

Whats next for them to axe?
8/10 Cats? They axe that and im complaining.

Barbie 10-02-2010 03:59 PM

friends was good for when nothing else was on

what are they refeshing the channel with?

i've liked the theme of indian winter and stuff but if thats what they plan to use to fill these old programmes then i dont want to watch that constantly

does this mean i have to go and buy the DVDs :(

Callum 10-02-2010 05:43 PM

Sad but I have the whole boxset anyway so I'll be able to watch them all. Will be odd though seeing no Friends on E4, it's always on.

Beastie 10-02-2010 05:45 PM

They could put some old sitcom to replace it. I always wanted to watch that "Party at five" show starring Neve Cambell. (Sidney from Scream)
