Earthquake in Chile, Tsunami caused

I just saw this on the news. Chile been hit by a 8.5 earthquake causing a big Tsunami to spread out to sea, travelling at 600mph. Death toll isn't reported to be high in Chile, but the Tsunami is causing loads of places to be evacuted in the South East.

Tom4784 27-02-2010 03:12 PM

Well thank god we haven't got another Haiti on our hands in Chille but let's hope that the evacuation goes well in other places.

8.5's quite a large earthquake, I wonder how badly affected Chille is, let's hope they were lucky.

Ninastar 27-02-2010 03:18 PM

Oh right, i get it now. Thanks ben. God i would hate that feeling.

Crimson Dynamo 27-02-2010 03:21 PM

This earthquake generated 600x more energy than Haiti!

but it was deeper and not near major population areas.

Good grief, I guess it could have been a lot worse but still it's gonna affect Chille for a while.

30stone 27-02-2010 03:24 PM

Well it initially didnt kill to many people, but without getting people evacuated 3metre waves that would last possibly for days.

Could do major damage.

The earthquake took out a few buildings and that must have been very dangerous.

30stone 27-02-2010 03:25 PM

Anyone else find it weird looking at a world map like that so that america is on the right and australlia on the left?

James 27-02-2010 03:27 PM

It looks really bad from the pictures.

It's about the 5th most powerful earthquake in recorded history - http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquak...gest_world.php

Hawaii is expecting the tsunami waves in about 5 hours.

Let's hope for the best, considering how powerful the quake was Chile was lucky. Let's hope that luck affects the countries in the Tsunami's path.

30stone 27-02-2010 03:34 PM

Is that what the waves are meant to look like?

Scarlett. 27-02-2010 03:35 PM

Thank god there has been warnings things could have been a lot worse

Sophii3x 27-02-2010 03:38 PM

Oh god, that's awful! :( Must be so scary for those awaiting the tsunami too!

I remember reading this on wiki a while back about the 1960 Chilean earthquake

Human sacrifice

A book by investigative journalist Patrick Tierney, The Highest Altar: Unveiling the Mystery of Human Sacrifice (1989) ISBN 9780140139747 , documents a possible modern ritual human sacrifice during the devastating earthquake and tsunami of 1960 by a machi of the Mapuche in the Lago Budi community. The victim, 5 year old José Luis Painecur, had his arms and legs removed by Juan Pañán and Juan José Painecur (the victims grandfather), and was stuck into the sand of the beach like a stake. The waters of the Pacific Ocean then carried the body out to sea. The sacrifice was rumored to be at the behest of local machi, Juana Namuncurá Añen. The 2 men were charged with the crime and confessed, but later recanted. They were released after 2 years. A judge ruled that those involved in these events had "acted without free will, driven by an irresistible natural force of ancestral tradition." The story is also mentioned in a Time Magazine article from that year, although with much less detail.

Shocking stuff

Stacey. 27-02-2010 05:00 PM

omg, terrible :(

Sure but they can not tell how bad it can be.

At least they know they have to move away from the coast
and talking Live they seem relaxed and ready.

arista 27-02-2010 06:08 PM

SkyNews just confirmed
Tsunami has hit NZ.

On SkyNews they just showed the
Massive area - The Whole of the Pacific
can be attacked.
It could even hit USA.

sooty 27-02-2010 07:07 PM

The waves, 1960 Chilian Earthquake (9.5) reached Japan in 22 hours.

I had a relative lived in a small fishermen's village called Shizugawa.
It had beautiful pine trees beach. I used to visit there when I was little, picked pink shells and played.
The village was part of coast attacked by the Tsunami and many people died.

Then this was 50 years ago.
Now all nations of Pacific Ocean must be well informed and well prepared for it.

President Obama said on TV,"We can not control nature, but we can and must be preapared for disaster when it strikes."
