Avatar thrashes Titanic's Box Office Figures!

Avatar is now the highest grossing film of all time, by a mile!!

Avatar has taken a collossal 2.6b in the box office worldwide... almost 50% of the worlds population, teh previous record was held by Titanic who was far ahead than any other movie with 1.8b!!!

That is a jaw dropping number for Avatar!!

Most films dont even make it to make 100m!!

Only 5 movies have made it passed the 1b mark.

1. Avatar- $2,556,989,342
2. Titanic- $1,843,201,268
3. Lord Of the Rings- Return of the King- $1,119,110,941
4. Pirates of the Carribean Dead Mans Chest- $1,091,345,358
5. The Dark Night- $1,022,345,358

Strange 4 out of the 5 have been in the 2000s. And we thought cinema was dead.

I think it's amazing. The story is beautiful and it's so sad. The acting is pure perfection too, great cast.

The saddest parts are when it's actually sinking and when the old couple are on the bed hugging. It's really sad stuff.

It's a steaming pile of dog poo. Drivel. At least there can't be a sequel to it.

Sequels always ruin films anyway so I'm glad it couldn't get one. J, admit it. You cried!

\PJ/ 06-03-2010 09:10 PM

thats amazing.

Smithy 06-03-2010 09:10 PM

Titanic is being re-released next year in 3D, does that mean it could pass avatar as highest grossing film, i.e last times takings + this times takings

\PJ/ 06-03-2010 09:10 PM

and i love titanic :P

ILoveTRW 06-03-2010 09:10 PM

all those top five are overrated, especially Avatar, Pirates of The Caribbean and The Dark Knight

With sheer delight when the iceberg hit. Has some of the cringiest dialogue I've ever heard and I never thought the cheesiness would be equalled. Then Avatar came along.... I see you. What absolute rubbish.

The only sequels that didnt ruin the original were IMO, American Pie 2 and The Godfather Part 2.

All other sequels are always much worse. However sometimes the 3rd movie is good (mostly in horror movies), eg. Scream 3 was much better than Scream 2, and Saw 3 was much better than Saw 2.

The worst sequel in the world is probably The Son of The Mask, sequel to The Mask (possibly my fave film ever).

A Titanic 2 would be absoloutley horrific to the original. Titanic, I got to admit, its a classic.

setanta 06-03-2010 09:13 PM

You know Di Caprio hates Titanic? Hates the effect it had on his career.

Seriously though, where can they go with a sequel? Hasn't everything been said now?

Nah, Cameron's had a few sequels of his own that have been as good as the first flicks in some ways - Terminator 2 and Aliens.

King Gizzard 06-03-2010 09:17 PM

i dunno, i just really love the setting of pandora and the characters etc so i'm looking forward to it even though it ll be ages away

setanta 06-03-2010 09:17 PM

Money talks Nathan. That's all it's about.

Enid 06-03-2010 09:18 PM

Under the sea. Under the sea. Darling, it's better, down where it's wetter. Take it from me.

Patrick 06-03-2010 09:18 PM

What the **** is it with a film about Blue Cats with Glitter on their faces?

Seriously, how can that film beat a film that was based on a true story were hundreds lost their lifes.

James Cameron must be rolling in money, both his films are the biggest of all time.

Titanic FTW!

I bet they are going to rip the ****ing arse out of Avatar, they are already planning a 2ND one.

ILoveTRW 06-03-2010 09:19 PM

can i just point out that the price of cinema tickets have gone up in the past 10 years

so it is possible that more people still went to watch titanic

Ive been looking at the the best voted films of all time with Citezen Kane topping the vote all the time, followed by the first two Godfather films, Shclindlers List, The Sawshank Redemption and Vertigo.

Is it wrong to say that i didnt get what was so good about Citezen Kane??
And I LoveDC, urmm its not impossible, they can do a remake with different actors. There were three other Titanic movied that were out before the 1997 one, they just werent popular. The ship all sank in them ones.

You have to think of Citizen Kane in terms of the history of cinema, and how Welles created so many new ways of expression, utilising every known method of lighting, cinematography etc, as well as introducing new ways of filming shots. It really was ground breaking for it's time.

King Gizzard 06-03-2010 09:23 PM

True, I was kind of focussing on the actual narrative, but obviously I didnt know about how big it was back then and that they were trying different methods on doing things.

I should actually be looking at stuff like that now, Im a Film Student now so i need to look at all aspects of films such as cinematograpghy, sound and lighting. But as i saw it years ago, I didnt know to look out for that. Talking about cinematograpghy, I got a B talking about the use of cinamatograpghy in the film "Leon".... ohh yeah :)

MeMyselfAndI 06-03-2010 09:26 PM

Titanic is the saddest film i watched in my life

Stephanie 06-03-2010 09:26 PM

i've never seen titanic.. or avatar :L
