Parent's music taste

A lot of people(although a lot less people these days it would seem) say they grew up listening to what the music their parents love and it's influenced their taste. Is this true for you and which artists or genre of music?

setanta 11-04-2010 01:46 AM

Oh yeah, I think your taste in music is directly related to what your parents listened to while you were growing up. I mean, you're obviously going to choose your own music but your tastes would have to be influenced by what you were exposed to as a child.

King Gizzard 11-04-2010 01:56 AM

well mine have made me deffinetly grow up liking bands instead of solo artists and the other kinda genres and what not, they loved hollies, monkees, beach boys etc..and werent really into all the solo artists and stuff (they mainly listened to the music of the 60s and early 70s)

MrGaryy 11-04-2010 01:57 AM

Not at all LOL. My mum listens to like, tradition Irish music LMAO. And my dad isn't really into music at all.

Princess 11-04-2010 02:00 AM

I dunno about mine, they were definitely quite pop people. My dad was all Bruce Springsteen,Van Morrison,Joni Mitchell and so on. My mum was more Elvis and The Osmonds, lol! They always encouraged my love of music.

Shaun 11-04-2010 02:00 AM

My dad was a fan of a lot of bands I am a fan of, but never really played them much past when I was 8.

But they are/were fans of Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Bee Gees, Elton John, Lionel Richie...all sorts I suppose.

Twilight 11-04-2010 02:04 AM

My dad fave band is blink182 but he likes 30STM,You Me At Six,Paramore, etc so hes more like me:D
and my mum faves are Westlife,Heart and older stuff etc, but she love's All Time Low<3,Lady GaGa,We The Kings and Cobra Starship aswell LOL

King Gizzard 11-04-2010 02:04 AM

LemonJam 11-04-2010 02:07 AM

My Dad likes everything I hate and Vice Versa. He loves Lady Gaga Tiny Temper and Led Zeppelin. Ugh

My mum loves classical, where I got my love of it from.

IKR lol

Princess 11-04-2010 02:14 AM

I don't like what my dad listens to now,it's all jazz, although when I'm going around the house singing Proud Mary or Jump he's like 'That's my music, where you hear that?' and I'm like 'Off Glee'
My mum loves Take That now, she's seen Queen live and she said Take That were the best live act she's even seen and she's told other people that so I know she's not lying just to make me happy, lol.

zotler. 11-04-2010 02:18 AM

My parents listen to a lot of Def Leppard, White Snake, Guns N Roses, Motle-- Anything that can be described as hard rock. I like all of the music they like, and some lighter stuff too. My step-dad's favourite band is Nirvana, he has Kurt Cobain tattooed on his arm and stuff, but he doesn't really listen to them? :|

King Gizzard 11-04-2010 02:20 AM

my dad likes all that il divo cack nowadays

Enid 11-04-2010 05:30 AM

My dad isn't into music really. When he does listen to it, it's only pop music.

My mum, however, likes a bit of everything. The Clash, Blondie, The Specials. Even Marilyn Manson, hahah.

Jords 11-04-2010 05:42 AM

Both similar to me, but my dad used to like metal when he was younger but not really anymore.

Enid 11-04-2010 05:47 AM

I wasn't heavily influenced by my parents. I just sort of branched away from the mainstream in school. My best friend was a goth, and she introduced me to all sorts of music. I mostly thank her for what I like now. :)

Stacey. 11-04-2010 07:32 AM

My mum and dad always listen to the same type of music as me
Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Shania Twain, Westlife, Miley Cyrus... etc
we all love that sort of music - theyre not into the older stuff at all!

CaraRawr 11-04-2010 07:46 AM

My dad loves music, has the biggest CD/record collection I've ever seen LOL. He likes Pink Floyd, Blondie, Guns N Roses, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Kasabian, Muse, AC/DC... yeah.

My mum isn't really into music, but she likes Bon Jovi.

xDramatick 11-04-2010 08:17 AM

My parents' taste in music is a tad like mine, but not that similar.

Mum listens to David Cassidy, The Osmonds, & all those older sorta people, and modern artists like Christina Aguilera, Cheryl Cole, and Pixie Lott.

Dad listens to Madonna, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Ke$ha, and loves those random one-hit dance tracks.

InOne 11-04-2010 10:48 AM

They listened to The Pixies, The Smiths, The Cure. Stuff like that.

Zippy 11-04-2010 11:04 AM

Kate Bush is somebody I grew to love directly from my Mothers influence.

And er....thats it I think. You will just grow up hearing it often. But whether you take to it yourself is down to your own tastes. Many kids automatically hate what their parents like.

M X 11-04-2010 01:44 PM

Not really. My mum loves Van Morrison, Luther van Dross, and now she loves James Morrison, Kate Nash etc..

I love Kate Nash too.

Rob 11-04-2010 01:45 PM

my mums taste is awful!

Jessica. 11-04-2010 01:46 PM

My mother likes 60's music and Elvis and all that stuff, but she loves current pop etc..
She was listening to Busted and Glee the other day..
She likes opera music too though..
She also likes Jedward.

I remember I knew the words to all of her weird 60's music etc.. but luckily I seem to have blocked it all out :D

Ross 11-04-2010 01:47 PM

I don't even know what they like haha.

Shasown 11-04-2010 03:33 PM

My mum liked the Batchelors, Val Doonigan, Dana, Petty Como The Wolfe Tones and people like that, my dad liked what my mum said he could, I have fairly eclectic tastes.

Firewire 11-04-2010 03:34 PM

Not sure on my mum's taste.

But my dad likes 80s stuff.

Lewis. 11-04-2010 03:43 PM

My mum is quite into her female solo artists.. Eddi reader, Dolly Parton.. but is also into bands like Travis, coldplay and toploader.

BB_Eye 11-04-2010 03:52 PM

I hardly listen to anything my parents do, except the Beatles and Stones... and everyone likes them, except idiots like Noel Gallagher who hate the Stones.

Otherwise, pretty much anything that doesn't amount to either motown, a Coldplay clone or some asinine "power ballad", my parents can't seem to stand so I find it very hard to relate to their music tastes. I think what embarrasses me the most is that my dad likes Sarah Brightman.

One thing my dad and I at least share is a loathing for U2 and Duran Duran.

Since when did Noel hate The Rolling Stones? lol

MeMyselfAndI 11-04-2010 10:21 PM

my dad likes the killers and old boring bands
and he now likes beyonce and alicia keys who are new

my mum likes leona lewis and whitney houston and people like that

Callum 11-04-2010 10:33 PM

My dad loves Oasis and The Killers. He's into a lot of indie, rock bands as well and I'd probably say that if he didn't go on about them/listen to them I wouldn't be into them myself i.e. Kings of Leon, Keane etc. Oh and he's a big fan of the old bands like Pink Floyd, Beatles, The Jam and singers like David Bowie as well. But he likes modern stuff too, he goes to pretty much every gig that's in Cardiff lol. People like Lady Gaga, Lily Allen wouldn't put him off.

My mum has more or less similar taste to me. She loves Cheryl Cole's songs, at the moment she doesn't stop singing Parachute, kind of annoying now haha. But yeah she's not really picky when it comes to music, Pixie Lott is another fave of hers. I find a lot of mums like Pixie Lott, don't really know why.

GypsyGoth 11-04-2010 11:27 PM

My dad liked country type stuff, and my mom likes jazz and classical.
