Steve loves his kids a hell of a lot more than his wife

when she came in he showed no signs he loved her at all

He hasn't seen his wife (to speak of) for all these weeks, his message from home had him worried because he said he thought his wife sounded unhappy with him and now he thinks it would be better/nicer /appropriate (whatever) to see someone he knew for one and a half weeks? ...All this knowing that his wife would have had to have travelled down to see him!
I can't see anything redeeming in any of it .. the last part you mention doesn't really make up for any or all of the above .. poor woman!

There's not a psychoanalyst in the world that could know his mind so completely that they came up with that little scenario from watching him on telly for a few weeks. You must be very proud.
