Arizona Congresswoman shot + 6 others killed

Quote:

A US congresswoman has been shot and killed at a public event in southern Arizona.

Gabrielle Giffords, a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives, was shot in the head at close range in front of hundreds of people.

The gunman was arrested after the shooting at the event at a supermarket in the city of Tucson.

Members of her staff were among up to 12 other people who were also shot. Six are reported to have died.

Ms Giffords, 40, who represented the eighth district of Arizona in the House, was married to space shuttle astronaut Mark Kelly.

She served on several congressional committees, including those covering the armed services and foreign affairs.

Jeff Rogers, chairman of the local Democratic Party, said Ms Giffords was "a rising star" in the Democratic Party and had hoped to eventually win the Arizona Senate seat.

"That is terrible news. She was a wonderful congresswoman and a wonderful person," he told BBC News.

He added: "We just can't continue to have this kind of carnage on school campuses and against public officials."

Waiting now for the NRA to defend successfully the right for even young babies to have access to fully automatic fire arms with no gun control whatsoever as part of their constitutional rights

MTVN 08-01-2011 08:36 PM

Take it this wasnt politically motivated or anything?

MTVN 08-01-2011 08:45 PM

What source is that Shaun? BBC News is saying this:

"She and four other people are in a critical condition, a hospital doctor told reporters. He said he was "very optimistic about her recovery""

Shaun 08-01-2011 08:56 PM

Well they've backtracked then, because I got the article from BBC News' website.

Sure he was a Greedy Evil Mental Taxi Driver,
more rare for the UK , though

MTVN 09-01-2011 04:15 PM

Nobody said it was only the USA, but it's far more prominent over there, that's undeniable

MTVN 09-01-2011 04:23 PM

Gun murders per capita by country:

This is clearly far more of a problem with the USA than in most developed countries

Gun crime in the US is far more of a problem than elsewhere in the developed world, that is a fact, I dont see what you're trying to say here.

arista 12-01-2011 03:13 PM

No that Utta Stupid Cow Sarah 'Reload' Palin

MTVN 12-01-2011 03:20 PM

BBC News: "Ms Palin, a possible 2012 presidential runner, hit out at commentators' "irresponsible statements" laying "blame for this terrible event".

Hang on, she is accusing the commentators of being irresponsible? And her telling her supporters to "reload", putting a target sight over this particular district and telling voters that she "has found the target, you find the solution", that isnt irresponsible in her eyes?

There is no evidence the crosshairs in her ad were that of a gun. They could have been the crosshairs like on a periscope on a submarine. Why do people automatically assume they were crosshairs of a gun?

Why are Brits so Obsessed with Guns?

There;s more coverage of this Arizona congresswoman in the british press than there was when yur own British MP last year faced an attempted assination attempt.

There were plenty of gun rampages of yur own in britain recently.

Brits seem to have short memories.

Why would they be the crosshairs of a submarine? The crosshairs were used to "target" those seats she was hoping the Tea Party could win I believe, crosshairs are always associated with guns

What was the case of a British MP having an attempt made on their life, remind me

There havent been "plenty" there's been two, and people havent forgotten them but this shooting in the US is current, Derrick Bird & Raul Moat are not. There was a huge amount of media interest in the two events when they were happening though. These instances are far more common in the States and the fact that it may have been politically motivated is what makes it of such interest

lostalex 12-01-2011 05:59 PM

The latest evidence is that it wasn't politically motivated at all, but that in fact, he was just seriously crazy.

Can't blame sarah palin, can't blame obama... only one to blame in this case seems to be his parents that didn't get him the help he needed.

But of course the 24/hr. News stations need something to talk about, so they make EVERYTHING POLITICAL.

Hypocritical BS from an American who comes onto a British forum to slag off the Brits and our culture and way of life - if you can't take it love, don't dish it out. It's not our fault you're American:pat: Just learn to live with it.

And as regards your democracy - at least we don't shoot our politicians yet:hugesmile:
