How Strict Were Your Parents When It Came To 18+ Games & Stuff?

When you were young [or if you're still under 18], What was your parent's like when it came to things like Drinking, Watching Older Movies or Playing Violent Games?

I was shocked when I found out my friend in school who's 2 years older than me, isn't even allowed games like Left 4 Dead/GTA/Red Dead/COD etc because of the violence.

My mum is pretty fine with me with this kind of stuff.

I started playing Video Games [like PS2] when I was about 5? And the game I took a shine to was Vice City when I first played it at my mate's house and then I remember asking my mum to get me GTA III and a Vice City for myself to play.

So she was fine with it, it was my Dad actually who use to get pissed when he would see me playing Grand Theft Auto when I was younger.

My mum use to be pretty 'strict' about me watching Horror Films, like she would get pissed at my gran if she'd let me watch a Freddy Krueger movie, but I can't remember ever really listening to her when she said 'Don't watch that!'

And now she lets me Drink in the house either by myself or with someone that she knows is a 'good kid'.

So yeah what about you?
Were you not allowed to like play 18+ Games until you were 18? Or was there a certain age you were allowed to play by your parents?

lostalex 20-02-2011 08:40 PM

My parents were strict about that stuff. They wouldn't even let me watch the simpsons. My best friend used to tape the simpsons for me every week. This was back in the 90's obviously.

My parents kept a pretty strict grip up until i was about 15 i'd say. Once we got the internet, all bets were off.

Ramsay 20-02-2011 08:42 PM

been playing games regardless of age rating forever

Smithy 20-02-2011 08:42 PM

Not bothered at all when it came to films and games

Locke. 20-02-2011 08:42 PM

Wasn't strict really.

My mum didn't want me watching Trainspotting like, but that's about it.

I think once they caught us (my brother and i) with my dad's secret stash of porno, they realized the jig was up, and they relaxed a lot. (may i just add that my dad's stash of porno was on beta-max lol, so not only did we have to s=neak the porno, but we also had to sneak out the old beta-max player to watch it lol.

They've never cared about age levels and stuff on films or anything

Stu 20-02-2011 08:50 PM

They were not strict at all. I don't see why any parent should be. Good films and games will serve along with reading to really broaden a childs imagination. I picked up good English and good visual senses from an early age from playing games.

A well produced, bloody sci fi movie with an interesting plot will do far better for a child than some Disney hogwash and despite the enormous, absoloutely huge amount of media attention and behavioural research done in to the effects of violent video games and movies on under agers, all we have are a few scraps of juiced up stories concerning kids who would have been nutters anyway and probably would have done far worse out on the street if they were not practicing indoors for hours at a time on a PC first.

The first horror film i was allowed to see was "Tremors" and it's still my all time favourite horror movie.

My parents weren't strict at all, they used to let me make my own choices about pretty much everything.

Mum was fine with video games and stuff. I've been playing GTA since I was about 8.

Films she was pretty cool with too. I could watch pretty much anything, only films I can remember not being allowed to watch were Trainspotting and Kill Bill when it was first released. Also, she wouldn't let me watch Chubby Brown DVDs until I was about 14/15 and knew when not to repeat the language on there. Pretty understandable really.

She didn't have a problem with me drinking either until earlier this year when I got picked up by the police for being D&D. Since then she hasn't exactly stopped me but she's made it known she doesn't approve of me getting in such a state and is a bit wary when I go out with the same lads as the time I got picked up. Again, pretty understandable IMO.

Patrick 20-02-2011 09:22 PM

What exactly was Trainspotting about? I'd google it but I'd rather know in a simple form about why people weren't allowed to watch it rather than a full blown plot on Wiki lol.

Tom4784 20-02-2011 09:34 PM

I was allowed to watch and play whatever I wanted to. When I was younger my mom was hesitant to me watching horror films but I still watched them anyway.

Niall 20-02-2011 09:35 PM

Violent video games I'm allowed, my Dad is pretty relaxed with all that. 18 rated films I'm allowed to watch too.

Drinking is a bit of a grey area though, I'm allowed alcohol at family things like Christmas and birthdays but not in the house really. :/

MTVN 20-02-2011 09:49 PM

I have pretty liberal parents really, they've never been particularly enthused about me playing violent games or anything like that but they havent stopped me. They've never been that bothered about me drinking either, they've always lets me take some of their alcohol if I'm going out which saves me money

Top tip, Trying presupposes failure.

Word of caution, just in case you do manage it one day, some of those jocks can be very vindictive. I have lived amongst them for a couple or three years.

Jords 21-02-2011 12:18 AM
