It's an awful idea. Hate all this health madness, it's stupid. If people want to smoke let them smoke. Should be brought back in pubs too.

I gave up smoking over 20 years ago because my son was asthmatic, and I was diagnosed with asthma myself 6 years ago. However, I think it should be an individual's personal choice to smoke so long as they do not pollute the airspace of another person. Therefore it is right and proper that there should be public no smoking areas, so long as smoking areas are also provided. No-one is allowed to smoke in my home, simply because I am asthmatic and the smoke triggers off an attack. I would expect smokers to respect the fact that non smokers find their smoke invasive and potentially harmful. That doesn't mean I would welcome or support a blanket ban.

It is hypocritical for the anti smoking brigade to bang on about how much smokers cost the NHS in view of the fact that the amount of duty they pay on tobacco and cigarettes is probably what is funding it in the first place!

I agree that the selfish, inconsiderate smokers are a pain in the a*se. As I said they need to respect the rights of non smokers NOT to have to breathe in their second hand smoke, then they might get more sympathy and support for their right to smoke themselves to death if they wish.

What I can't abide is the fascist anti smoking brigade who just want to impose a blanket ban on ALL smokers, which I think is wrong. If there is one right we do all actually have, then it's the right to do what we want with our own bodies, the only thing we truly own and that belongs to us alone.

I have never smoked but don't mind when people do,there are lots of things that can cause people to become ill, too much alcohol, not eating enough,eating too much and other things.

If the smokers who get treated like near lepers were all to stop smoking the Govt would have massive problems and a great big hole in its treasury coffers too.
It would need to get the revenue from other taxes, then the non smokers would be wishing the smokers were still around.

Live and let live, if people wnat to smoke let them, I have never objected to people smoking, I have friends who do and others who don'tand I am happy in the company of either.

I'm with you, but it doesn't take much to be considerate to those that don't smoke bearing in mind some people have life threatening conditions which are aggravated by breathing in other people's smoke.

Years ago when I used to smoke, I was always considerate towards others - it's just common courtesy and respect. It's one thing to pollute your own lungs but another to pollute a non smoker's airspace.

I don't see how plain white packs will make people want to smoke less. It's not as if the only reason kids smoke is because of pretty colours on the boxes.

I also heard they won't be behind the counter as well or something now :S

Terrible idea, I doubt it will even be that effective but that's not even the point. The government should stop thinking it's their job to protect people from themselves, people should have the right to choose to smoke if they so wish, trying to hide cigarettes away in the desperate hope that it will make people give up or not start is a stupid idea.

Where do they draw the line as well? What about alcohol? Causes a lot more violence, leads to a lot of deaths and illness as well, why dont they hide that below the counter. Or even chocolates? Obesity is a big health problem as well, shouldnt they be hidden so that fat people can resist temptation

How is making the packets all white going to change anything? If they are that bothered by smoking then they should just ban it full stop, but they won't as they will lose too much revenue that smokers bring.

Its quite a cunning plan by the government. It means cigarette manufacturers dont need to use high grade cardboard for the boxes to take inks etc.

They will be able to pick up the cheap job lots of recycled cardboard that cereal manufacturers are now discarding.

The mineral oils that caused the cereal makers to stop using recycled stuff will then leach into the tobacco, killing off the smokers quicker.

Less smokers will mean it will appear to the general public that the government have finally got the message across that smoking kills.

And no one in the cardboard industry looses jobs. For the foreseeable future by which time the cardboard and tobacco workers take up the dead smokers jobs.

Dont see the point, it wont make people want to stop and it wont stop those who intend to start.

Let people smoke if they want to, thats what I say!
