Appearing offline

Okay so I could go into a big hoo-ha about why I think appearing offline is stupid in the first place but that's not really my motivation for making this thread.

I've noticed now that a number of participants in forum games still insist upon appearing offline. This is more of a personal plea to those sorts of members, rather than a general complaint, for you to stop appearing offline - because this is really not helpful when I, or other members (involved in a game) need to contact you.

I know it's only a small detail but it's so frustrating and I ultimately think appearing offline is totally pointless. Stop pretending you're a ****ing enigma and just appear online like the rest of us chumps. Capisce?

I agree though. I usually appear offline, but appeared online through elimination

Benjamin 26-07-2011 02:11 AM

No.

Shaun 26-07-2011 02:14 AM

Ben you're the main person I'm directing this at :suspect: I know Karl, KG, MMAI and DTM always appear online.

:suspect:

I usually appear online, but during The Mole I switch so none of you can see when I'm about to post the quiz.

Novo 26-07-2011 02:16 AM

Mods should all appear online

Shaun 26-07-2011 02:16 AM

but that's mean :bawling:

Kerry 26-07-2011 02:19 AM

I think mods should appear online and also shouldn't reply to posts once a thread is closed. It's not fair on others

Vicky. 26-07-2011 02:21 AM

I reply after its closed to tell people why it was closed D:

No, thats fair enough. I mean when mods add their two penneth yet the thread remains closed

Benjamin 26-07-2011 02:23 AM

I replied to that MMI thread just to clear things up, as some people seemed to think I was digging at MMI, which was far from what that was about. It honestly was to do with The Mole.

OK but it's still unfair no?

Vicky. 26-07-2011 02:25 AM

I also dont see the problem with mods appearing offline. Its very very rare to get a PM about anything anyways, and if people have a problem they use report, which we still see and deal with when appearing offline, or they use the private forum, which we also see and deal with :/

Locke. 26-07-2011 02:25 AM

Yeah that is really annoying. Especially when the mod is replying to you and you can't get them back :bored:

I wanted to reply to a post of yours only to find I couldn't as it was closed but then a mod had been able to reply for their view

Not saying the view was right or wrong. Just that if a threads closed it's closed

Jordan. 26-07-2011 02:29 AM

Never understood the need one bit.

Novo 26-07-2011 02:29 AM

Most of the time when threads are reopened by mods it's just to have a quick dig before they close it again.. a horrible cowardly thing to do :bored:

Nope because I was offline and came back to see everyone assuming I was digging at him. I have two options; either start a new thread to clear that up or clarify in that same thread (yes ok, members cannot reply, but seeing as that was my thread I felt that I am allowed to reply to it). It's not like I do it all the time.

Actually sometimes its accidental. We dont actually need to reopen them to post in them :/

I have replied to a closed thread before without realizing its closed. I usually delete my reply though once I realize.

If you use todays posts...it doesnt have the lock next to the thread

Never said you did but in fairness - right to reply should be for all

BTW this isn't a dig or personal. Seen it before

Like I said. I could have started a new thread to clarify the reason for that thread. But that would have given way to a thread turning into the way the other one did and being closed. So for the sake of saving more arguments it was easier to explain my intentions in that thread.

Kerry 26-07-2011 02:37 AM

OK well, not turning this the same way so.....

Locke. 26-07-2011 02:38 AM

Or you could have just left it as it was.. it's not like MM&I would have been round your house in the morning to beat you up

No, but I didn't want him or anyone else to think I was digging at him. That thread was made due to The Mole and some players thinking he was female, which I did not explain properly in the OP. I'm not here to pick on members, yet some of you like to think everything is a drama because there is nothing else better to do on TiBB.

That wasn't a reference to anyone in particular but if you want to take it as a personal attack, by all means feel free to.

Kerry 26-07-2011 02:51 AM

MM&I should post a thread saying his gender surely? (I think already done?)

Regardless, it shouldn't matter. A post is a post on a forum. I don't recall genitals

It was more to clear up confusion as several players throughout the game thought he was female because his name isn't a clear indicator of gender.

'k

Jords 26-07-2011 03:08 AM

Agreed that its totally pointless but mods should be made to always appear online.

During The Mole I appear offline because otherwise they can see stuff I'm doing for tasks etc.

But you can rest assured at least one of us will be online at any given time. For example I'm usually online between midnight and 7am. :)

I agree with every single one of the above posts.

Mods should always appear online.

When a thread is closed - no further comments should be allowed. At all.

Point in case:

http://thisisbigbrother.com/forums/s...6&postcount=85

Forget the obvious gang pack mentality.... just home in on one particular member..................... after the thread has been closed

Then during any game I'll run from now on, I'll step down from my mod position whilst running it. I personally don't see the big issue with appearing online, I see it as another excuse to have a pop at us. When I was a member it did not bother me one iota if a mod appeared online because you generally know that at least one will be there at any given time as there are so many of us...

Vicky. 26-07-2011 03:39 AM

I still cant think of any reason why it would be a problem for mods to appear offline...

As I said, reports still come through as usual, and are dealt with as usual.

And I cant think of any 'emergency' or anything that would require a PM straight back. Or any other reason why you would need to know which mod is online :/

Exactly. Although for some reason it seems to bother certain members. I'd like to know the reason why though.

Locke. 26-07-2011 03:43 AM

It's a secret :idc:

Kerry 26-07-2011 03:52 AM

I know it can be reported and will get dealt with ASAP but if for instance, someone posted personal information about another, I'd like to know and see there was someone around who could deal with it immediately rather than having to sit around to see if it happened

Novo 26-07-2011 03:53 AM

Don't know why you should appear offline though? i find it easier when Mods are viewable online then you actually know they'll reply then rather then guessing that they are going to be online.. and as for the game bit surely you can just go offline to do the actually task and then back to online afterwards instead of remaining offline for the entire game which is probably frustrating for the contestants as well when they want to get hold of you.

Shape up Mods. :idc:

Kerry 26-07-2011 03:56 AM

Example

Mods/admin all offline

Member gets their name/address posted on here by another member who knows them

Now - do they feel safe in the knowledge that at some point someone will be around to delete it? Or do they feel safe seeing another mod IS online to do so?

I do it because when I used to appear online, people would moan about what I was doing. No joke.

If they had reported something and I viewed a different thread for a while, I would have them moaning on about me not dealing with the report immediately, even though I had not seen the report thread.

Why should anyone appear offline?

But if a mod was online, they would delete it. And if they werent, obviously it would be when the next mod gets online. Im not quite getting the point here :/

My point is it's reassuring to see that mods are about
