The Grammy-winning rock group announced on its website Wednesday that it has "decided to call it a day as a band."

The group composed of singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills released its debut album "Murmur" in 1983. Drummer Bill Berry was also in the band but left the group in 1997.

The message online said the band members "walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished."

The group gained a great amount of its success in the 1990s. It released back-to-back multiplatinum albums and had hits like "Losing My Religion" and "Everybody Hurts."

Their last album, "Collapse into Now," was released in March.

"During our last tour, and while making Collapse Into Now and putting together this greatest hits retrospective, we started asking ourselves, 'what next'? Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together.

"We have always been a band in the truest sense of the word. Brothers who truly love, and respect, each other. We feel kind of like pioneers in this--there's no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring-off. We've made this decision together, amicably and with each other's best interests at heart. The time just feels right."

MICHAEL
"A wise man once said--'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave.' We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it.

"I hope our fans realize this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way.

"We have to thank all the people who helped us be R.E.M. for these 31 years; our deepest gratitude to those who allowed us to do this. It's been amazing."

"One of the things that was always so great about being in R.E.M. was the fact that the records and the songs we wrote meant as much to our fans as they did to us. It was, and still is, important to us to do right by you. Being a part of your lives has been an unbelievable gift. Thank you.

I know I will be seeing them in the future, just as I know I will be seeing everyone who has followed us and supported us through the years. Edit: Heard of some of their songs actually, just the band name was unfamiliar

One of the best bands ever,love their music such a shame and 'Everybody Hurts' one of my all time faves.

Automatic For The People is probably one of the best albums of it's decade.

I'm not D:, they couldn't be making music in their 80s as it would show them as it would be bad, its good they retired at this time i said. Thats not trolling.

:( I liked some of their music. Never listened to much of it though. It feels stupid doing it now just because they've split.

I reviewed their album from this year, they seemed to be on the up-turn from a pretty bad 00s.

My first comment which I've edited you would all happily say it if Justin Beiber quit music, Its not trolling fgs, i just hadn't heard the band

Whats with all the stop trolling BS! I dont see any trolling, just someone who is ignorant as to REM. Just because most of us like them, and know them, doesnt me someone cant give their two cents, no matter how stupid!

Being ignorant to them is one thing. What he was doing was blatantly playing up to his own self made stereotype as being the one who thinks old music is dirge and unpopular.

It was from me, I don't even like REM but I know trolling where I see it, you're only one point away from a ban so drop it. Don't give the mod that's known for dealing huge infractions out a reason to do so.

I think there's about four or five of their songs that I absolutely love.
