Meat is murder?

I was just wondering how many vegetarians we have on the forum? As someone who has only recently become a non meat eater, I would be interested to hear what led people to make this lifestyle choice? For me it was my son that gave me the initiative, he had done a project on the subject in school which involved a lot of research. I discovered things that I found distasteful and my son got a little upset about it and announced he wanted to go vegetarian. Being an animal lover myself I decided we would both go for it. I missed meat at first, but its a lot easier now. Don't get me wrong, I still get tempted but have so far managed to resist, and it helps that I love veggies and salad. Anyone want to share their experiences?

I use to be a Veggie, but my family didn't support it and kept serving me meat and when I refused to eat it I was punished and stuff.

Also in school there wasn't a very wide variety at the time, this was about 4 years ago.

Ammi 01-10-2011 06:14 PM

I don't eat meat, but I'm not a vegetarian

MTVN 01-10-2011 06:15 PM

I can honestly say I've never once thought about giving up meat, I just can't see myself ever doing such a thing and I've never really been affected by the animal sob stories tbh

Maia 01-10-2011 06:18 PM

I'm a proud vegetarian and have been for nearly 5 years now. I don't miss meat at all and to be honest don't really understand the need for it when there are so many nice substitutes for it. And I'm perfectly healthy without it.

So you got no support then? I imagine you would have kept it up otherwise. Seems unfair really. I can sympathise as a friend of mine has a daughter who also wanted to go veggie and she flat out refused to let her, as it would be too much trouble cooking different meals.

Mollie, I didn't know you were a vegetarian too! I think I have heard Kerry the mod say she is one too but not sure and apart from that I am not aware of anyone else on the forum.

I'm a vegan and my family is completely against it, but they have no control over what I do. I hatepeople who aren't vegans or vegetarians or aren't considering becoming one tbh.

You'll be hating a heck of a lot of people then.

Take it neither you, your family and those people that you befriend possess, used or purchased any of the following:

any item made from leather (belts, shoes, handbags, chamois)
anything plastic, including shopping bags
fireworks
white sugar
and many other everyday products that contain animal products/byproducts known as slip agents.

Redway 01-10-2011 07:20 PM

Couldn't imagine being a vegetarian, to be honest. Don't care what the doctors say. I love red meat.

Vicky. 01-10-2011 07:23 PM

I love meat too much to be a vegetarian. Especially red meat.

So for purely selfish reasons...I would never go veggie.

Yeah, you're right. Any other meat, though, tastes nice.

I do hate a lot of people, yes. And seeing as I'm not an idiot I research everything before I buy it, and live a 100 percent vegan lifestyle.

That's harsh. Vicky is entitled to her beliefs as much as anyone, and to voice them. She hasnt criticised veggies, just given her thoughts. The point of the thread is not to preach or be holier than thou, just a discussion.

Posts like this are disgusting.

No, it isn't. If you don't like meat, fair enough. I completely respect your views. A lot of people, however, do like meat and you can't tell them not to eat meat just because you don't like it. She hasn't criticised vegetarians - she's just offered her view; so what's your problem?

No more disgusting than hating others who don't happen to share your views or your beliefs and being so utterly intolerant of others having an opinion of their own.

Lee. 01-10-2011 08:39 PM

I love meat too much to ever even consider it... oh and I hate vegetables, so I'd be pretty hungry!

Kate! 01-10-2011 08:47 PM

A very valid point Lee, and I thought hard about making the choice with that as one reason. You wonder if you will still get enough nutrition etc. As I mentioned before though, I love nearly all fruit and veg. And I eat fish, I could never be vegan.

swinearefine 01-10-2011 08:55 PM

No, not all my family and friends are vegan or vegetarian, but they are all considering it now. I live in a very rural area and there's not many vegan or vegetarian options, but a lot of my friends want to become vegan when they go off to college and have access to vegan options and don't have to answer to their parents.

I should clarify my original post. I don't hate all non vegans, just the ones who don't consider it or who are passionately against it. A lot of people are just ignorant and haven't been exposed to veganism or vegetarianism before, and have just heard negative myths such as it is unhealthy. I don't hate people for ignorance, but if they learn about it and still don't care about animals, then I begin to really detest them.

To those who are criticizing me for attacking people who are against veganism and such, it's not because I'm forcing people to have my views. Actually I am extremely open to people doing whatever they want - I'm pretty much an anarchist. I believe people can do whatever they want as long as they do not intrude upon the rights of others to do as they want and be safe. That pretty much rules out murder, animal abuse, violence, stealing.

Those are my views, and I think if other people shared them, it would be a much better world.

Pretty much makes a mockery of your other posts about you hating people who aren't vegans/vegetarians and who aren't considering becoming such.

Obviously poorly planned vegan diets lead to death,.as does any similarly poorly planned diet. That couple was ignorant and they deserve the worst punishments available.

I think it's very ignorant that you are using that to try to say that veganism is bad, though. Stereotyping all vegans to be crazy and careless.

How do you figure? I said I hate people who aren't vegan/veg or who aren't considering becoming one, and I just clarified what I mean by that. I don't see how that makes a mockery of it at all

Just listen to yourself. You're the one who called Vicky's views "disgusting". She shared her view and you had a go at her for it. Why should we respect yours if you're gonna be like that?

Where did I say veganism was bad? If there's any need for the word ignorant to be banded about: I'd respectfully suggest you read what I wrote....carefully, and then come back and show me where I said veganism is bad, or where I stereotyped that all vegans as crazy and careless.

Step for a hint: my comment clearly stated Vegan parents of one child that was killed due to THEIR vegan beliefs.
