For The Attention Of Moderators and Administrators

As we know, on this forum occasionally rude unnecessary 'arguments' occur. This is not what I am talking about.

In the past few months I have been involved in civil debates over what another member has possibly said. The replies to these on my part have rarely broken official rules. However they have to be deleted (somewhat understandably) as they can ruin the ambiance of the thread in question. Similar to what just happened in beloved Marc's thread.

What I am requesting is not a thread for arguing. But a thread where posts which may ruin one thread can be moved to, so that when someone wants to get their point across in a civil way to another member, they can. So that neither party; the thread maker, nor so called 'arguer', has to have their part ruined or feel they are being unjustly treated.

Of course the threadm if leaved as an argument thread would just result to petty insults and an animalistic mess. So rules would need to be made clear to begin with that it is about civil debate resolving, not baiting or insults.

This is what I do feel could improve the forum, because it does not unjustly delete people's posts when they have done no wrong but then does also not ruin the thread where a minuscule 'conflict' could arise.

Maybe a possible trial could be put in place or a vote so we could see if it would help keep peace in other threads but let people have their opinions when used in an intelligent calm manor.

Also it could make a good read for some other members on a later date ;)
Please do not just disregard this idea because it is 'CharlieO' suggesting it.

I like the sound of your idea CharlieO,but I don't think the Mods or Admins would take the risk due to some members abusing it I think.

Smithy 28-01-2012 05:39 PM

That's why there would need to be clear well written rules and severe consequences would be taken if people over step the mark.

Seems a bit pointless. There's not even that much arguing anymore.

Because the moderators mass delete like crazy as soon as anything close to a debate occurs.

Marc 28-01-2012 05:47 PM

Just PM each other instead of spamming threads.

That's because those posts aren't related to the thread what so ever, even if it is my thread about wet wipes lol

Yeah that does annoy me a bit really. It used to be able to pan out more. But threads are locked quite quickly these days. (And this probably will too)

lostalex 28-01-2012 05:49 PM

make me a mod, i'll sort it out. :)

Stu 28-01-2012 05:49 PM

I'm all for a total cesspit of a thread or subforum where we can slag each other off for the laugh. Have no rules in it and make the rules for the rest of the place tougher. It would instantly be a million times better than the crap chat threads we have.

I want it for the entertainment value though. Not for the type of wanky, faux moralistic reasons you are trying to peddle. You can always just PM people, you know. Of course nobody would see you then and it wouldn't count, right?

Besides it absoloutely wouldn't stop things from breaking out in other parts of the forum. If anything it would increase it.

That is a fair point. However I will explain why it does not work.

A thread is far more easily quotable.
Also if you PM someone they just accuse you of 'baiting' and 'stalking' on the basis that they cannot ignore a PM. If someone wishes to leave a thread and not reply they can easily do so. A PM can not be left unopened unless you want an outstanding notification and not readily ignored.
A thread would work better as one can't be accused of spamming an inbox.

Yes and that is why I am asking for things to be moved into a designated thread rather than deleted all together. So nothing is ruined.

You really don't believe that argument, do you?

People will want to reply to a thread because it's in a public space and they want to be seen getting the better of the situation. PM's are incredibly easy to read, ignore and delete. I've done it countless times in the past with people who were not worth my time.

lostalex 28-01-2012 05:54 PM

... Im just saying, if you guys made me a mod, things would be so much more simple. :)

I'm like universally loved around here, and everyone trusts me to make fair decisions.

Please refer to my other post made to Marc as when in a PM you can get infracted for so called 'spamming' of another's inbox.

I think thats one of the reasons admin said no to the no rules sub forum when it was brought up before.

And threads are infraction free wonderlands, right?

Where do you think most infractions occur? PM land or Threadworld?

Let go of the straws, man.

To be honest you can ignore a thread or report any nuisances just as much as you can with a thread. And you can delete them if you want to leave the conversation. To be completely honest, as much as your arguments with half the forum would be entertaining for everybody else to read it would only cause arguments and sides being taken and for tensions to build and spill over into other threads by people who aren't even involved in the original argument.

lostalex 28-01-2012 05:57 PM

I think the only way to solve this is to take mod status away from everyone, and give me ultimate admin status.

tomflint 28-01-2012 05:57 PM

King Gizzard 28-01-2012 05:57 PM

It's just like the 'spam forum' for me, I don't know if it would get used because it's not against the rules..

Thats a bit of an exaggeration tbh Charlie, we delete posts when they have been reported and are breaking the rules and when our warnings in the thread are ignored we don't delete them at the first sign of an argument

I do believe it yes. As in the past I have been unfairly infracted because I was PMing someone clam and justified points. But a report was made so an infraction was given for 'spamming'.

Stu 28-01-2012 05:59 PM

My brain is also now saying to me that a 24/7 Fight Club would really take away from the daft dog-in-school excitement of fights breaking out in threads they shouldn't.

It's like giving away crack cocaine for free. So much of the romanticism would be stripped away, dig?

Yeah that's one of your arguments. I was poking holes in the "people can ignore threads but not PM's" one. I assume it was good hole poking because you've just totally sidestepped it.

Jack_ 28-01-2012 05:59 PM

I'm all for no moderators. Imagine that. Who needs authority anyway?

lostalex 28-01-2012 05:59 PM

if yur looking for a 24/7 fight club then I'm definitely yur man :)

Or maybe you can not read. The thread is not asking for a 'Fight Club'.

Kid it's not like we are talking about LOST spoilers. If a fight thread exists I'm going to have a read of it. The mere existence of it would take the magic away from spontaneous off topic arguments.

See you're not the only one who can make "I'm suggesting this because I can't control myself ahhhhhhh!" arguments.

maybe you should take your own advice and get out more, if the forum is upsetting you that much, maybe a few days helping out in a charity shop or doing something more useful with your time would be just the ticket? otherwise you could just let it all drift over you, and not worry about having the last word!

InOne 28-01-2012 06:03 PM

I made a "get it all out thread" a couple of years ago. It had Jess and Harry arguing for about 3 hours in it. It was quite amusing and worked well. Those kinds of threads just remind you why you dislike some FM's so much.

lostalex 28-01-2012 06:04 PM

wait, i'm confused, is this thread about me getting mod status? or are you just teasing me?
